Chase Young Suspended

He isn't an amateur, and hasn't been for a long time. Why such a game of make believe in NCAA FB, etc.?

"Amateur-ism" died when the US--with The Dream Team in 1992--went all "Soviet", selecting from pros vs. just using "amateur" players. And frankly, "appearance money" had been around on the track & field for at least a decade, though it was usually in the form of "travel expenses".

Maybe I'm out of line here, but pisses me off that Fant throws that quote out there. Just another slap in the face to those that thought he should have played in last years bowl game.
Ron Gonder agrees with you. The former Hawkeye broadcaster blistered Fant in one of his "Footprints" segments on AM 600.

Let me ask you this question. Are you still bitter? We won the bowl game. Things have worked out for Noah. These players take a risk every time they step on a football field-or practice field. Just ask Jake Butt, who is on Denver's practice squad as he tries to hang on in the NFL. Or is he even on a practice squad. These players have every right to weigh all possible options even if they aren't always in the best interest of the fan.

Why would Fant or any projected top level talent hang around to possibly get hurt in one of the 50 meaningless (bonus...coaches $$) bowl games?
I wasn't talking about a meaningless bowl game. I was talking about a hypothetical chance for a NC.

Read my reply to Kicker's post. I understand completely where you're coming from.

I'm interested to see the nature of the "violation." Speculation is it's agent contact.

It seems like Ohio State is trying to cover its ass here just in case. It's not like it needs him for Maryland. Fryowa could line up at DE and the Bucks would win by 40.
I would pay top dollar to see this happen;)

But Mo Washington was allowed to play...
The hypocrisy of the NCAA would overflow even a place as big as Ohio Stadium.

Washington played a big role in Nebraska's early conference win vs Illinois. Think of what the middle of the standings would look like if the outcome of that game was reversed.

When there are hundreds of millions (and more) of dollars floating around, with jobs and careers on the line, AD offices, coaching, broadcasting, advertisers, boosters egos, NCAA et. al. with little accountability or interest in accountability, how can anyone be surprised by anything we hear, just the tip of the iceberg. The "bad" stuff never makes it to the daylight. Just the way it is, you are, what your money says you are. If everyone is flush in cash, why do anything...it isn't "hurting" anyone, the ends justify the means. Everyone is doing it. Kind of like drug user talk.

Not bitter at all. Does it affect my life one way or another? Not in the slightest. That said I still feel at this time that it was and still is a bitch move. He turned his back on his teammates to pursue a lifelong dream, and I get it. I get why he did it. But for me, and many others, it is and was always team first when I played. I totally understand the Jake Butt situation and I also understand that injuries regardless of when they happen have affected thousands of individuals lives.

I wish him the best of luck in the NFL. I truly do. However, I also know there are a number of former Hawkeyes who made the choice to play that last game in an Iowa uniform alongside their teammates. I thought it was a cheap shot from him to throw that out there and reiterates the fact that he got what he wanted and did what was in the best interest for him, when he very easily could have kept it to himself and said nothing at all.

Edit: Bitch move was probably harsh...maybe I should have gone with selfish.

Illinois would be all alone in 2nd place in the West at 4-2 with a win over Wisconsin.

I'm guessing you want me to go the route @Joshbrown took. I can see the writing on the wall.

There's certainly different ways to view this. I would like to get the opinion of his teammates. I would guess their support for his decision was near unanimous. Their inspired play in the Outback Bowl, once they got their bearings, would tend to support that premise.

The old foxhole bunker mentality isn't what it once was even in amateur sports. But i can see where older fans hang onto it. I'm in my fifties and I know many people my age who would agree with you or have an even stronger opinion.

If he ends up being eligible to play the rest of the season, OSU is still in the running for the playoff, and he followed Fant's advice, he would be a pretty poor teammate.
Sorry man, when there's a guaranteed $20+ million on the table or a possibility of ending up like Jake Butt, teammate status is out of the question. Any coach or teammate who'd disparage a player for turning down guaranteed money that would set up his family for decades to come is a POS.

What you said might have been true before huge guaranteed rookie contracts became a thing, but the whole "with your shield or on it" machismo bullshit is idiotic. This isn't Randy Quaid flying a crop duster into an alien ship to save humanity here, it's a football game played by kids who aren't going to care in a few years.

I just hit 40 but definitely see where you're coming from as well. And honestly we're talking millions of reason's not to play, so obviously for me to take the position I have is based on belief vs. reality.

I just want to throw this out there, but if any of you think there aren’t Iowa football players who get gifts, money, preferential treatment, “loans,” clothes, or any other under the table stuff from Iowa boosters and people with ties to the athletic department, you’re f’ng idiots.

Ask this guy? :)

Ironically I just read that this "family friend" just happens to be an NFLPA certified agent. Looks like Young may have been lacking in the common sense department, but now I'll be interested to see what type of consequences get handed down to the agent. At what point are these kids going to stop being taken advantage of.
