CBI? Just say NO...

Fran did qualify his interest in the CBI post-season tournament, and I would hope that after tonight, he is finally convinced his time would be better spent on finding some players. Giving the guys we have another game or two experience would be more like punishment at this stage. If Iowa is relying on many of them next year, it won't be a good thing.

Bill Walton has said, "Talent can gain experience, but experience won't help the untalented." I'd have to agree with Bill on that one. And it seems the observation applies to Iowa men's basketball at the moment.

NO to the CBI. YES to recruiting kids who can score.

Yes to whatever additional time can be spent on practices. Much like people saying we should turn down a bowl bid when we have a less than stellar season. Its not about the bowl(tourney) but about the additional time you get with the players.

The time spent on recruits will be the same either way.

Iowamike is the same guy who said Mike Quade didn't deserve the Cubs job because he didn't spend enough time managing in the minor leagues.

Well, iowamike, what if we win the Big Ten Tournament and secure an automatic invite to the big dance? Should we turn that down, too?

Just kidding, we all know that Steve "Mr. March" Alford was the only Iowa coach good enough to win the BTT.

Hey, Shadasrevenge, if you want to disagree with me, I have no problem with that. Everyone has the right to be wrong. BUT, I do have a problem with people who disagree with what I did NOT say.

I NEVER said Quade didn't spend enough time managing in the minors. I simply said that I thought a blue-collar Hall of Famer, Ryne Sandberg, who went all the way down to A ball to manage, worked his way up to AAA and won Manager of the Year there, who has worked with almost all the young Cub players, deserved the Cubs' job. Period.

You wanna object to that, go ahead. But don't misrepresent what I said.

And finally, what has THAT got to do with THIS?

And for those who weren't paying attention the first time... This isn't football, and this is in no way comparable to the lowest tier bowl game ever invented. This is a basketball team that is 10-20 and can't score. This is a basketball team that usually works hard but has a serious talent deficit. My point, in case some missed it, is that practice all you want...if you don't have the requisite talent, you're wasting your time. You could spend 12 hours a day, 7 days a week practicing for the Olympic sprint team. Do you think it'll help?

It has to do with your opinions being asinine. To say Iowa should turn down a bid to any post-season tournament is the height of stupidity.

I agree that Iowa won't be invited but on the outside chance they are invited I think they should take it. Extra practice time, extra game(s) AND it's only fair to J. Cole that he get to play in the post season ONE TIME as a hawkeye. Kid deserves it.

Do you really think Jared Cole would treasure playing a game or two in the CBI on a, what, 8 or 9-game losing streak? I have a hard time believing he would consider it a feather in his Hawkeye cap. At least I know I wouldn't... And unlike most people on this board, I have actually worn the Hawkeye uniform... not that facts of any kind make any difference to the incredibly self-absorbed on this board.

So you're telling me that you wouldnt want to put on the iowa uni one more time even if it was for the CBI?

OK, since you brought it up, what did you play, and when?

To associate Iowa's program with the CBI smacks of desperation.
CBI is for losers, is a joke and has no pedigree.
110% agree with the OP.
Kids are tired. Coaches are tired. Fans are tired.
Time to give it a rest already.

The CBI is not a joke. But it should be reserved for teams from one or two invite conferences that had a good season, but not good enough for the NCAAs and who don't draw enough fan support for the NIT. There will be plenty of teams from leagues that send 3 and more teams to the NCAAs who had a good season, but ended up on the wrong side of the bubble and will end up in the NIT. The important thing for the NIT will be fan support.

But the other tournaments pull from teams that had similar levels of success, but don't have the most fan support. For instance, the Sun Belt West had two teams finish 11-5 in conference. However, the Sun Belt is only sending one team to the NCAAs and that team will be the winner of the SBC tournament. Also, the SB is not a league that draws a lot of fans, so the NIT will most likely overlook their runners up.

Sorry CAAR, but any tourney which sniffs at a program, any program, well under .500 for the season and playing worse as the season wears on, isn't legit in my book for anything but a money grab.

Well, we could line up with Indiana again. If we lay down on that one like MSU, that would top it all off. Not a lot of progress being made at this point. I am sure they would play, but you have to wonder if anyone really cares.

Lets play South Dakota State again and see how much we have improved since the first game of the season, no excuse but the Big Ten was brutal this yr and hopefully will not be as strong next yr.

This whole thing about them sniffing at Iowa is as much of a joke as Iowa having a shot at Paige or Barnes. If this staff can learn one thing it is to keep things a little closer to the vest. The supposed inquiry came when Iowa could have still gone on an improbable run to get close to .500.

They were not, and are not going to ask Iowa. I guess the four worse years in the history of the program are enough to make anyone delusional.
