Cartwright to the rescue

Props to Cartwright for giving us a boost when nobody else could. He made some poor decisions, but without his assists and unexpected scoring, the game would have been much closer.

When announcers say we have no post presence, they are being kind. I cannnot believe Basabe was a non factor against NE's weak front court. His play this year rivals the Bermuda Triangle for unsolved mysteries.

What's amazing to me is that people forget what he did last year. He did not have a good game by any stretch but showed flashes at times. If he were the same player this year it would make all the difference in the world. And Basabe sat most of the first half because he had 2 fouls(1 which was bs).

BC started off bad. He had way too many turnovers and I thought he was going to hurt us more than help. He more than made up for it later.

I wish Devyn would work on his 3pt shot this summer. Since he has not yet shown the ability to be an effective driving guard he needs to be a 3pt threat.
Nice to see 2 back to back treys.

I don't know about that. I would say he is usually pretty effective when he takes the ball to the hoop. His medium-short range game is pretty spectacular when he is on.

I think he is usually guarded by one of the better defenders on the other team and the fact that he hasn't proven he is a consistent threat from range... it makes it harder for him to drive, because the defender does not need to respect his long range shot as much. He can give him more space and have more time to step in front if Marble drives.

I was ecstatic when he hit his 2nd 3pter in a row. If he can improve his long range game and become a consistent threat from deep... He will be a nightmare to guard, because I think he is very good at taking the ball to the rim already. I think he maybe currently lacks confidence or is not quite comfortable shooting the 3pt shot right now, but I think he definitely has the ability to become dangerous from beyond the arc.

I was also very happy for BC this game. He looked like the PG that he is capable of being. He made some good passes and knocked down some shots.

One of the best parts about this season for me is that we have seen what each player is capable of. They lack consistency (most of them are very young still), but they have the ability to perform at some very high levels. Imagine how dangerous of a team we would be if we can put everything together and have everyone playing to their potential on a consistent basis.

If this team continues to grow/progress/develop... We are going to start being a force to be reckoned with, IMO. :D

CG, except for that glorious drive &jam over Ralph Sampson III and a few others, Devyn has not taken it to the rim very often. He seems to beat his opponent off the dribble and then pull up for a 6 to 8 footer. When he is on, it is quite effective.

I hope this summer he works on his 3 pt shot and hopefully he puts on 10 to 15 pounds of muscle. Growing another inch would help too. That way I think he will gain confidence to take it all the way to the rim. As you said his perimeter shot will aid his inside game.

Marble hasn't looked very sharp the past few games....maybe a bit of fatigue setting in. Earlier in the year he was confident in his game once he got into the paint and lately he seems to be hesitating. Maybe he is looking for Gatens given his hot shooting?? His two 3's last night were certainly timely.

I like the fact that he pulls up and takes those 6 to 8 ft shots. Most times he will have clear wide-open shots just because the defense expects him to go to the rim. The 6 to 8 ft short jumper is a lost art in college ball. If he can start hitting those shots at a high percentage he becomes very dangerous to defenses because they will not know whether he is going to pull up or go to the rim.

Practice your free throw shooting Devyn...I think he will be going to the line a lot in the next few years.

Also as Iowa gets more guards who can penetrate, the defense will be put under more and more pressure. They won't be able to always just put their best man on Marble; Iowa will have additional guards who will be able to penetrate.

You don't need to finish with a dunk to be an effective driving guard. I have seen that as the best part of Marbles game.

Being a 6'6 PG has its advantages when he is posting guys up, but definitely is not an advantage in space against quicker guys. We would be a better team with more consistent PG play, but Marble has certainly held his own and saved our season.

I dont want to start a "I miss Cully" thread, but man, another PG option would have helped out a ton this year given Cartwright's concussion, hamstring, ankle sprain and struggles on the court. When NE cranked up the man to man, Marble and Cartwright really struggled with their handles.
