CR: What's something about Kirk Ferentz that would surprise people?
JC: The thing is, there were plenty of people who wanted him gone, and there was all that talk. But the team, we never doubted him and we always stuck behind him. People don't understand how much of a great person and a great coach he is. He develops so many good men out of this program. I'm so happy I'm at a program like this because I feel like once football is over and I can't play, I'll have learned so much from this program about becoming a respectful man. Coach Ferentz, he just cares so much about the game. I don't know if a lot of people know it, but he gets emotional and that's awesome to see, that you have a head coach who cares so much about the game, so much about us, our character and what goes on after football. He doesn't just care about the guys he has on his roster this year.

Interesting to hear such praise coming from Canzeri. It seems like there were always rumblings/rumors that he may have been looking to transfer.

I have to think what he says is pretty damn accurate

I have caught **** for defending the overall package of KF ... really? shall we look at the current situation with USC as Sark's drunken *** was a joke

there are unhappy players even on winning teams and I'd say a number higher than 70% have at least thought to transferring or what it would be like some where else? That's human nature. Ever think about leaving your gig?

Thanks for making me feel guilty, a-whole!!

Nice read thanks for posting. It's good to read about players who demonstrate good values off of the field of play.

I think we'll look back on KF era with great fondness and respect not only with what he accomplished on the field but off in building good men, read the Seth Olson story lots of great guys have come through. Also he was instrumental in getting the football complex

Iowa is lucky to have him. He should be given the right to coach at Iowa as long as he wants to coach there. Unfortunately, in this "what have you done for me lately" society that we live in, that may not happen.

Bahahaha. You have no effing clue what goes into this. 70% are working hard to contribute to wins, or start someday. 20-25% are starting or playing a lot. The rest figure out they are over their head, don't know are, or aren't willing.

I dont think anyone ever questioned Kirk Ferentz character as a man. I dont think anyone ever questioned whether or not he cared about his players. Even the most ardent anti-KF posters have conceded that he's a quality person.

Not true. Most of the vociferous ones have claimed him to be greedy and selfish, and plan to use the Rhabdo incident when pleading their own case at the Pearly Gates

Greedy and selfish are common traits among a LOT of Americans. Not sure that makes you a bad person. It also doesn't mean that you don't care for and take care of your players. I have openly claimed that the exorcise that lead to Rhabdo was stupid. Just because the staff made that mistake, doesn't mean that they disregarded the well being of their players.
I guess I will need to see some direct quotes or posters named because I cant remember the "most" that you are referring to.

Here's the thing tho... Does KF seem selfish to you? There were a lot of people making those claims. Lots of people saying Ferentz could care less about the fans. All he cares about is his comfort and he's sweet contract. He isn't trying to win games, blah, blah, blah. All sorts of that BS was out there at different times. You didn't have to look hard to find it.

Does Kirk have a sweet contract? Yes, he does, but he earned it and his agent did his job. Why does that make Kirk selfish? Would any of us fans voluntarily turn down a raise because it's too much? Lol. The idea of that is ridiculous. Like it's somehow Kirk's fault that he did his job and earned a big contract. Lots of people made stupid claims. Not to mention the fact Kirk and Mary have donated millions to the U of I Children's Hospital. They are incrediby giving. The selfish claims people made were always insane. They just had a pedastle to stand on because the team wasn't performing well.

Ferentz has always been a solid guy... no one questions that for the most part.

What do you expect Canzeri to say? They are 5-0 and he is getting to carry the ball 30 times a game.

I do or have played basketball with a handful of ex Iowa Football players.

They (usually) don't say anything bad about Ferentz... but they really don't say anything good either.

I've always sensed that he was respected but more of the CEO guy in the tower that no one really knew that well.

My point is: I don't have a problem with KF being selfish, nor do I have a problem with someone calling him selfish. Someone calling someone else selfish isn't an insult in my opinion. It could be very accurate and I still wouldn't consider it insulting. KF has the right to be selfish, as does every disgruntled fan that doesn't want to buy season tickets, for whatever reason they claim.
Some might claim it's a selfish act to not financially support the team because you want better results. That could be both accurate and not insulting.
The only character flaw that I can honestly point to and criticize KF and BF on, is when BF was living in supplemented housing when he was a player. That is a pretty good indication of either greedy behavior (wanting to get something for nothing when you should be paying for it) or selfishness. That's not "bs". It's a well known fact that it occurred. Does that cancel out all of the money he/they have donated to the Children's Hospital? Not in my opinion but others might think so and they would have an argument.
