can't have defensive regressions

That team was much faster and athletic of course

We match up poorly with them

but.... I saw a lot of players walking around half assing - I know what Fran was mad about because I saw it alot today - just poor effort.

I wouldn't call it laziness but more of dwelling from being down and then just losing focus.

I like Aaron White and his defense has never been great but today I was really disappointed with somethings I saw.

He was very lazy and disinterested on defense.

He may be one of those guys that if he isn't scoring his defense gets much worse - that's not unusual.

But about 5 times in the 2nd half he sat their and watched his man go up for an easy dunk or follow up.

He wasn't helping on defense or even trying to box out - he just sat their and watched.

Iowa should have stayed in a zone defense the whole game. When a team is clearly more gifted and athletic playing man to man defense is a huge mistake. It likely wouldn't have made the difference in the loss column but I think the score would have been closer. Our post defense is not in coordination with each other also. When one big moves up to guard against penetration then the other post player has to rotate over to cover the voided spot to prevent the easy slam. Of course this only works when playing the zone. Playing man defense against Michigam is just ignorant.

Iowa is so fundamentally bad on defense. Have been under mccafferys entire tenure.

So far, that seems to be the case. And I'll say it now: Until Iowa starts playing some defense, they will never have a chance at being a great team. You can't give up 95 points and expect to win.

Wasn't Lickliter ran out of town for focusing on defense and not putting an "entertaining" offense on the floor?

I'm actually happy with our D this year. Today a really good team beat us down in their place and took away our will. It happens all the time in basketball. It will almost certainly happen in Indiana. If it happens to one of the bottom dwellers I will be concerned tho.

Agree. I think we've made great strides defensively. (until today:mad:)

you can't teach lateral quickness

mccabe, may, marble, basabe, white, oglesby all came in as sub-par defenders. yeah, there is a limit to how much stars "matter," but when the majority of your 2 and 3 star recruits got their ratings based largely on their offense, you either better be a defensive genius or you need to address that team weakness in further recruiting classes.

clemmons and ingram had a rep as lockdown guys. pat doesn't look like that yet, clemmons has been ok.

by the end of the year, they'll be quicker on their rotations. the effort will hopefully be better. but they'll still always be 2 or 3 guys on the court at any given time whose defensive instincts just aren't B1G sharp.

Thats part of it. Oglesby and Marble going underneath screens is absolutely ridiculous. Thats **** you dont even do in high school. It never gets corrected, they keep doing it!!!!!

That's a positive spin!

or maybe it's corrected over and over

and then in the heat of the game, the kid makes the same mistake

anybody who's taught or coached has seen this

frustrating as hell

not saying this is definitely the case, but sometimes bad instincts continually subvert good coaching

or maybe they just never work on it

who knows

Iowa is usually able to hide their defensive deficiencies against unathletic teams, but Michigan was just too athletic for them to guard. Michigan might be too athletic for anyone to guard. They're a nightmare for a very young team playing their first real road test of the year.

There are teams that Iowa can't match-up to athletic teams that know how to play, or possibly the best team in the nation.

Throw the young part out of the game, Michigan plays 5 freshman, but the difference is, they have the best PG in the country, oh but he is a sophomore. Michigan has no Senior contributors, they are one of the youngest teams in the nation. Oh yeah, they have a lot of talent and athleticism to go with that youth.

This is the first road game Iowa has played in waht, 5 or 6 weeks? Only the second road game of the year? I think that is quite a hurdle for any young team, particularly one that cannot match up at any position.

My point is with Michigan being one of the youngest teams in the nation is that they will go on the road and win, but the main difference is talent really.

I know. I get that and don't dispute it. My point is that Iowa's not going to go on the road and beat many teams with more talent.
