Exactly... To be a fly on the wall of those convos... How's an offensive player a QB no less like Resar who's going to be asking the obvious questions about what to expect and type of O they may want to run etc want to stay committed? What would KF say?
KF: Come play for us
Skill position recruit: I see that you got a new OC. Why did the other one get fired? Is the new one better than the old one?
KF:
Maybe I misread and am off, but I'm assuming you just listed Coach Parker because he's already on the staff? I'm trying to wrap my head around why we'd even toy with the idea of moving one of the best defensive coordinators in the country to the other side of the ball. Probably just misinterpreting things and you weren't implying moving him as an OC but rather listing him as a current coach on the staff.Probably deserves a dedicated thread.
Obviously, things move pretty fast so the list will morph over time.
Based upon some searching, I ran across quite a few coaches that appear to be ripe for promotions or a lateral move depending upon the situation. I broke it down to internal and external candidates.
Internal:
Phil Parker. Has already expressed that he's not interested in a HC position.
Jon Budmayr. He'll obviously get a look. I don't know any Hawkeye fans that seem excited about the idea, but Kirk can be loyal to a fault.
Lavar Woods. Highly respected and has the traits you look for. Budding star. Question is, is he ready and/or qualified for that jump right now?
George Barnett. Just kidding. Might be qualified as an OC at a division 1A middle school...
External:
Paul Chryst. Strong possibility here IMO. Kirk would be comfortable with him and they have similar philosophies.
Joe Moorhead, HC, Akron, and former PSU OC. Akron hasn't panned out well. Another guy whom Kirk would be comfortable with. Has prior success.
Tony Tokarz, QB coach, FSU.
Gino Guidugli, QB coach, Notre Dame.
Willy Korn, OC, Liberty.
Jim Zebrowski, QB coach, now co-OC, Kansas. Recently promoted when Andy Kotelnicki was snatched up by James Franklin.
Cortez Hankton, Passing game coordinator, LSU
Mack Leftwich, OC, Texas State.
The question will be whether Kirk is willing to get outside of his comfort zone and hire an up-and-comer, or look for an older coach with which he is very familiar. If I had to guess right now, I would say Budmayr if he stays internal, or Chryst if he looks outside. Personally, several of the young guns above would be great options IMO, but we'll miss the boat if he slow-walks the process. All of them appear to be hot candidates.
I keep coming back to O'Keefe too. I don't think most fans truly appreciate the needle he was able to thread. He had huge constraints on the type of players he could recruit, the system he could implement, the plays he was allowed to call, and yet consistently put together the type of "good enough" offenses that would have made for amazing teams when paired with Iowa's recent defenses.Where would you rank O'Keefe's chances? I want to note just how much worse our offense has gotten each time O'Keefe has left the staff. My only concern with bringing him back is that we would likely fall to last in every offensive category when he leaves again.
Honestly, he might be the best choice if KF isn't ready to evolve. At least he knows the landscape as it's been to date. And I'm sure he'd come out of retirement for seven figures.Where would you rank O'Keefe's chances? I want to note just how much worse our offense has gotten each time O'Keefe has left the staff. My only concern with bringing him back is that we would likely fall to last in every offensive category when he leaves again.
If we were betting, my money would be on Budmayr.
Mine too but I don't like it.If we were betting, my money would be on Budmayr.
If say he goes the Budmayr route. And Iowa fans 'revolt' on social media in any kind of way that TN fans did over Schiano and that whole fiasco any chance Goetz steps in again? I would think not hiring Budmayr for it would be pretty damn bad. Nothing would change besides maybe a couple less penalties from the sidelines during the yr.I've heard Budmayr as well. Not that what I've heard means anything. But I wouldn't get my hopes up that this is going to be anything but a ho hum hire that no one's ever heard of.
Kind of like the folks getting hyped up before the Michigan game...you're gonna be sorely disappointed.
i don't see posters here advocating for this move, just stating what they are hearing and what they expect based upon KF's typical actions.why are people so down on Budmayr? I mean what real information do people have about the guy?
A. The fans are not relevant. It takes donor revolts to move the meter. That is what got BF fired. If say he goes the Budmayr route. Well he's why Hill is a Hawkeye. He's supposedly been mentoring qbs and helping BF do his job. And needless to say he's looked at as a part of the problem more so then a person that can fix anything. He'd be more of a yes man then BF was.why are people so down on Budmayr? I mean what real information do people have about the guy?
True I lump donors into the fan category in this sense cause end of the day that's what they are too. Just wealthy influential ones.A. The fans are not relevant. It takes donor revolts to move the meter. That is what got BF fired.
B. Goetz cannot tell KF who he can hire at OC. BF was a special deal because he was KF's son, reported to her, and he was sucky at his job in a way that was obvious to everyone except KF. She had the right to step in. She does not have that same right with his replacement. KF is the HC and should have the right to hire anyone he deems fit as OC, except a family member. It would be overreach for Beth to refuse whatever choice KF makes, no matter how dumb we or she finds the choice to be.
