I like making fun of Campbell, and I think he is overrated. Yet for guys like him, this might become the norm. Take a Brohm, Fleck and Campbell for instance. What is the advantage to jump to a FSU or USC the way the playoffs are currently configured? You are expected at those places to make the playoffs, or you will be fired in 3 years. Well maybe USC can get back there, they don't have a behemoth like Clemson standing in the way like a FSU does. So instead of taking a job where you are 95% likely to fail to live up to fan expectations, why not stay in a small community, be bulletproof, make tons of money, and watch your kids grow up (as much as any coach can).
So while I do think Campbell is overrated, it would not be hard to see him finishing 2nd in that crap conference a couple times over the next decade, then you are down to a one game situation vs Oklahoma. The rest of the years can be filled with 5-7 to 7-5 and he will have a statue in front of Jack Trice someday.
