I still think this team can be very good this year and contend for the West. Some thoughts:

1. Iowa's two best O linemen didn't play Saturday. We will get them back.
2. Wadley is hurt. He should recover.
3. It would help to get Mitchell back. A very good player and a good blocker in the backfield.
4. ND State is a good team, and they got all the breaks last Saturday. If the Daniels run had stood (the holding call was ridiculous), Iowa wins that game.

Some observations:

1. Iowa has to quit worrying about getting CJ hurt. He needs to use his legs. If he gets hurt, so be it. Other teams cut their running QBs loose and take advantage of their mobility (ND St did it during the entire game).
2. Bower is a liability. I'm sorry, he just is. Surely we have other LBs who can be rotated in.
3. Could King rotate in on offense in passing situations? I think he would be a beast at wide receiver.

ND State didn't really catch all the breaks, they dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball. Our OL will be fine but I'm genuinely concerned about our DL

Agree, turn CJ loose so can help team more. It really helps that looks like Stanley could be pretty solid if needed. In addition, Wiegers has been in the program a while in case would need him. Can't coach scared.
Bower kind of has that Mark Wiesman kind of feel to him.
I think they are going to have move King to play the L side if the other teams best WR lines up there. They need to get him involved and dictate making the other team adjust or change.

I agree with you on getting dominated on both sides of the line, but I'm going to hold off on going as far as saying I'm very concerned at this point. The Oline depth wasn't as strong as I thought they'd be, but at the same time I'm not sure how bad of shape our Dline is based on the fact that our offense couldn't keep them off the field.

An FCS team was clearly the better team on Saturday. It's not like it was a gimmicky win or anything like that. That is at least somewhat concerning to me

We were way better in the first half, 3rd quarter was fairly even, and 4th quarter they looked way better than us because we got Ferentzed. You say they dominated the line of scrimmage but they only did in the 4th quarter. Iowa dominated the line in the first half. The dline anyway. Oline doesn't matter so much because we were missing our best 2 who are back now.

They had 205 more rushing yards than us. They were clearly the better team on Saturday and we didn't dominate the line at any point in the game

This is why not to calm down. Worried? No. Anxious? No. It wasn't like being gimmicked. The truth was known. KF lineman back ups should be FCS able....minimally. We've been through too much with KF not to be concerned. This is not an anomaly.

But most of their yards came in the 4th quarter and we had hardly any because our oline sucked. Watch our dline dominate the first half. It really happened.

My only reason for saying this is because we showed we were the better team for 2 and a half quarters. All people remember, and rightfully so, is the ass whoopin we took in the 4th. My point is what happened there was completely on our coaching philosophy. Absolutely no urgency to get the defense off the field.

We had 34 rushing yards total in the entire game so I don't agree our line dominated at any point in the game

I am not concerned, Saturday was an anomaly, ndsu benefited by some bogus calls, got some lucky breaks, and Iowa was short handed. Iowa is still in good position for this season.

They had that much in the 3rd? I guess it started earlier than I remembered. Still tho, the first half our dline did good.

And the fact we have no dline depth is what concerns me. Look at our rushing defense numbers on the season, they're not good at all

The concern to me is the regression of the defensive front 7. What is going on here?

Just my two cents is that when you've got guys big run stopping DT's and under sized DL's its bound to catch up with you when you spend so much time in the first half on the field. It seemed to me at least that our defense spent nearly the entire first quarter and had our defense on the field for what 37 minutes total. Throw in the fact we ran 7 offensive plays in the fourth quarter and I can see why defensively we looked bad late in the game.

Read that Monday dvr article. We ran our base defense for every single play of the game with zero blitzes. Do you realize what a disadvantage that puts a team at if you're up against a halfway competent coaching staff?

I think if we go back to mixing it up on defense and get our oline healthy, we will be pretty good. Just the week before we looked about as good as you ever see an Iowa team look. I get ISU sucks but so do a lot of other teams we play and we rarely have the talent to look that good.
