Calloway offer pulled too

I wonder if any other schools send that out. I doubt any other schools live in the 80's like we do though
The letter definitely has an overly controlling demeanor to it. The line about looking forward to "coaching you" is even badly worded.

It's a surprise when the stars line up for a miracle season, we get recruits to commit that truthfully we have no business getting verbals from in the first place, and then we show them the door. I'd always stood behind KF as a coach, and gave him the benefit of the doubt when it came to the roller coaster of emotions from successful season to rough season and back again.

But, IMO, if this is truly on our staff, then in my opinion it shows that they are stuck in their ways and are unwilling to do what is needed to taking the next step to stay at a higher level, and I cannot support that.

Seriously????? You just realized this????????

Where have you guys been? Calloway has been a forgone conclusion for weeks now. I posted this Oct. 11th about Eno and Calloway

He tweeted that.
I don't think the Adidas stuff matters, he tweet out stuff about Michigan's gear as well. We need to keep recruiting him, as other schools aren't going to quit. I think in the end he signs with Iowa, and Calloway doesn't.

The next day Oct. 12th I posted this as new information came to light:

Melvin Gordon to Wisconsin
Karan Higdon to Michigan
Eno Benjamin to Nebraska

This is reason #1 we can't sustain success. This one is gonna sting.

Just a guess on where he goes, I just don't think it is Iowa any longer.....hopefully I'm wrong.

Yep, no plantation mentality here.

Well played sir. Like I said, I can handle it on the field because the players contribute as much as the coaches do to wins and losses, but dismissing 4* recruits for taking visits. WTF. No excuse when you can't bring in talent and then let one of the focal points of your recruiting class walk for visiting another program.

But our AD doesn't hold our coaches accountable for keeping us in the conference race year in and year out, so why not care why were losing recruits that could help us keep us on top.

When you just sign another extension and have slipped back to mediocrity no better way to stick it to those that support you, year in and year out, better than running off high profile recruits. Barta, get this guy another extension.

I don't think Iowa has the standing in the college football world to tell recruits that your offer will be pulled if you visit another school. That's Alabama or Ohio State level of arrogance, not Iowa level.

In an ideal world, that would be a nice, righteous place to be. But, last time I looked, the real world doesn't operate like the ideal world. Furthermore, as others have pointed out, Iowa doesn't exactly play by the same rules - they're more than willing to keep going after recruits who have "committed" to other schools.
We don't "pull" the offer. If the offer is "accepted" and then the recruit looks at others, we back away from our obligation to honor the commitment. This is a big difference. Fair too.

I don't know, "pull back" is listed as a synonym of "back away". I think you've been watching too many presidential debates - your parsing of words is pretty thinly sliced. I liked to hear Ferentz or Barta sell that distinction.

Chevin removed "Hawkeye Commit" from his twitter bio, and also retweeted this.

As others have stated, I think this ship has sailed

Taking advantage? Is this really how many of these kids think?

I didn't like that either. I actually typed a long-winded reply and then removed it. I hate to say (and realize the firestorm coming my way) it, but the mentors for many of these kids are the opposite of what they need. Add a failing education system and news media completely ruled by tabloid journalism and these kids have a tough road ahead.

No firestorm for me Josh, I agree entirely. We live in an entitlement society. Hang around any group of 25 year olds and talk to them about college debt. Most of them have $25,000-$100,000 in debt they are already swimming in from college. Instead of being happy with the opportunity in front of them to be trained in some of the best facilities in the world, to get a free education, and to get a shot at making millions for playing a game, the view it as being "taken advantage of".

My point isn't to get into a debate of should they get paid more, but rather they do get an AWESOME opportunity and advantage over 99.9% of the population, and they want to cast it as "taken advantage" of.

That's because a good portion of these kids have no desire to even go to college. It's hard to appreciate getting compensated for something you view as an inconvenience.

Per another site. Both offers pulled last week.

This is a mentality that mostly signs guys where Iowa is the best offer. That is not how you get better talent.

Calloway had always been considered a long, long shot. So, this isn't surprising. I do believe our staff's philosophy isn't geared towards a continual recruitment of a kid, even after they have verballed. That is what is needed when you are chasing high level kids who have a wealth of options and all of those options constantly in their ear. It just is the way it is. Our approach appears to be....conservative....

A full-time recruiting coordinator with no coaching duties would go a long way to the continual recruitment needed to land a few of these kids.

Kirk is delusional that the highly touted kids are in the boat when they verbal. They are not until they sign. Asking a kid to have the maturity of a 60 yo head coach is ridiculous. You can't keep calling kids drama queens and then lose all the really good raw talent. It's an arms race not a social club FCS. If you continue to be 60th ranked class every year you won't be a top 25 team ever. We continue to pull in kids that are targets of Buffalo, South Dakota state and directional MAC schools. That means you'll win a game on occasion but you can't sustain a division competitive calibur program for long.
