CALLING OUT HUCK FINN

This is why I'm a fan who wants a coach who thinks 78-0 is classy. Keeping every team in the game to protect their feelings is not the sign of a good coach. Demoralizing your opponent should be the goal.

He pulled the starters at 42-14 with the ball on Purdue's side of the field. Maybe a series early but he'd already lost Meyers and Kittle. The 2nd team flopped.

If he keeps the first team in and Iowa wins 56-21 but King/Jewell/Welsh etc gets dinged up, he's getting killed on here right now. He's damned if does, damned if he doesn't.

A good bit of the D #1's were on the field though 2nd half. Its the defense.

I'm not advocatng for 70 points, however if you really want to melt the clock, run the offense....retain the ball..don't be so rigid in play selection. The D was out there for a long long time in the 2nd half. And yes its on the D and its on the play selection on offense.

Its a win. That's good.

Everybody agrees you pull the starters. Not an issue. But, you let the subs run the 1st half playbook, not the KF "dont hurt their feelings" crap!

Hmmmmm...........why did he King our best player back into the game?

This exactly.

Why put the 2nd string in to run stretch plays to a stacked box? If they are going to do that then let the second string at least attempt to punish them.

2-4 minutes left I get it.
13 minutes and two identical series of play calling? Stupid.

Coaches need to execute at end of games to give players, even lowly second teamers, a chance at success.

The three different punts from Purdue's 30 yard line was just ridiculous. Either kick the field goal or go for it. You don't f****** punt from the opponent's 30 unless you're playing in a freaking hurricane.

You'd have a good point if he didn't do that every game we play. 4th quarter is play not to lose even if we're behind.

I know the "they'll get hurt" reasoning has been used a lot. And I don't mind starters being pulled. But I was bothered by the two times we were at the opponents 35 and punted. Explain to me why old-Kirk has decided to murder new-Kirk ? Is old-Kirk not aware that it was new-Kirk that went 12-0 last year?

Yes, winning is better than losing. I'm happy we won. My complaint isn't just about a single game against a pathetic Purdue team. Conservatism/game-adjustment-fail is why Iowa lost to Northwestern and NDSU. Iowa has more talent than those teams, but the coaching cost us those games.

I have less problem with pulling the starters than I do with the mentality out of the half. Just once I would like to see Iowa put a game away after a half like that rather than allow teams to feel good about themselves

Purdue was hopefully demoralized at half-time. But as you suggest, Iowa allowed them to regain their confidence. If you put in the second-teamers throw a bomb and keep upping the score.

Here we go. This guy gets me. Tell your second-teamers you don't expect clock-melting, you expect points. Then unleash them. If they can't produce put in a third-teamer who is anxious to prove himself.

Strong point and I agree. Don't send the kids out there to be lambs to the slaughter. Let them know they are to execute a game plan as if the score is zero zero. Instead, our guys get demoralized as Purdue regains its faith. How is that preparing the second-teamers for the future? Cirk just taught them he doesn't have faith in them . . . or that he doesn't want them to hurt feelings. Either lesson is a horrible one.

Thank you for that. That was old-Kirk plunging a knife into the back of new-Kirk.

This guy sums it up perfectly. In 2015 Iowa finally played to win, rather than playing not to lose. It's not a coincidence the number of Kirk-ball games won or lost by a single score or less.

Some of you are never happy. First there is a clamor to play the backups. Play Stanley. Get experience to build on for next year. Then it's "pulled the starters too early".

Well I am in the camp of....They got some good experience but we also saw that there is a big drop off from the number one's to the backups. Stanley looks decent, but he isn't ready for prime time. I think it clear that Iowa is a young team. We have some good experienced upper class men and when they go down, Iowa is hurting.
As we have seen with Vandenburg. He was Iowa's one good receiver and with him out Iowa is trying to get our young receivers up to speed. The youngsters may not make the grade this year, but this experience will pay big dividends next year and beyond.
