Call me a Sunshine Pumper

They could easily lose 3 of the next 4. Does the CBI/CIT take teams below .500?

I don't think he's been healthy lately. We were bad when he was healthy. I laugh at the people that said they expected it to be this bad this year when that was not at all the case in the preseason. I got crucified for saying this was an NIT team at best and I think like 70 some percent of posters said this would be a tournament team in Jon's preseason poll

I think you're history is awfully revisionist, and many posters thought NIT. Unfortunately I can't search threads because I'm getting crushed by pop-ups today.

The point of the subject thread is to show although our record indicates we are awful, had a couple OT games gone our way, the perception of this team would be very different.

The fact that our best player, who we relied heavily on, has been a shell of his former self for the last 9 conference games (50% of the conference season) hasn't helped.

Let me find that poll here in a bit. I know the majority predicted an NCAA appearance for sure

KenPom factors in close losses and that still shows a bad team. I think you're off on this one

Anyone can play the what IF game! The Fact is if Iowa was a Tournament team they would be and they have had many chances to be a Tourny team and failed to deliver..

We are not a tournament team, we are close to good enough to take adantage of a weak conference schedule and sneak in. If we were just a little better or had a little more luck on our side, we could have made it in. Instead we had bad luck with injuries, started out WAY too bad on defense, and had two double ot games now go our way.

How does that lead you to believe you got "crucified" for saying NIT at best?

If I would have voted, I would have said yes. That doesn't mean I thought we would get in. It just means I thought we had a 50/50 chance or so, so why would I vote against them.

Because I did. People had way higher expectations than me and thought I was crazy for saying NIT at best. 3/4 of the posters on here expected a tournament appearance. Haha crazy

Yeah we know how much of a homer you were in the preseason. Your sky high expectations of Williams were the best

The problem with playing the "what if" game to add more wins is that if we don't have fairly substantial second half home comebacks against Purdue, Rutgers, and Michigan, we could just as easily be 11-16, 3-11 in conference and playing for the cellar.

Same. I thought we'd make the tournament, due to an easy conference schedule. I said I wouldn't be suprised with NIT either.

There is a huge difference between leaning towards thinking we make the tourney and expecting to make the tourney. I would guess less than 10% of hawk fans expected to make the tourney.

Absolutely nothing wrong with speculation. Minnesota game was blatently stolen. The Illini game just might have had a different outcome if JBo had made his free throws. Absolutely not his fault that we lost the game. Very strange game. Watched it with friends who, of course, were raging about the poor play at times, but when all was said and done they admitted that it was a very entertaining game. Fun to watch. As poorly as we played at times and despite our poor shooting in the second half, we could have won that one.

The way I see it is the same as I viewed Jesse Settles first season, believe we also had a very young team, made many mistakes that cost the game down the stretch. My feeling at the time was the same as now. The mistakes this season are learning tools, invaluable experience which will help in similar situations next season and following seasons. The following season Jesse and the Hawks won those games. Will be looking for the same improvement next season for these guys.

I had no post season expectations for the Lads. Too many inexperienced players on the team. Decided to watch the team and individuals improve, and anticipate the rewards next season. Didn't even think of the NIT, believing it to be a very long shot. The Dance was simply not a consideration. We have exceeded my expectations. Win the final two at Carver and we probably finish 8-10 in the Big regular season. Reverse the Minnesota steal and we would be 9-9. Either situation would be considered a successful season.

One thing for certain, this team is fun to watch. There have been many thrilling games this season.

I am anticipating a solid perfomance tommorow evening against Indiana. The DM Register mentioned that we have won four in a row against the Hoosiers. I thought we lost twice last season, with Yogi killing us here and there. We certainly owe them, and can win. Stop Blackmon from nailing threes and keep Bryant under control and the game is ours.

If we fail to make the NIT, that should be the end of the season. Can't see the benefit of playing in one of the minor tournaments. No upside that I can see and a ton of downside if we would lost the first game.

Yeah, this season has been about what I expected, give or take. I was figuring 16-18 wins and possible NIT, and they still may get there. It doesn't mean I'm happy with that, but it just kind of is what it is when you lose as much from last year's team as they did. I expect next year to be better.

I think the OP is correct that going from where we are now to being in the dance is not all that huge of a leap, but the fact is that this team isn't very good yet. Just too young. There's a reason the team has lost some of these games besides just some crappy officiating.

But, I remember an Iowa team in the 1990's going 11-16, and finishing 9th in the league. That team had freshmen and sophomores named Jess Settles, Chris Kingsbury, Russ Millard, Kenyon Murray, etc.. Those guys ended up being pretty good. So let's see how it goes a year or two from now.

Thats the season I was thinking about.....

Similar situations indeed.....
