C.J. Beathard Impressing at 49ers Camp

Well for one thing stats in regards to QBs is NOT everything. Lots of QBs have put up hollow stats over the years. But Give or take here's my list of QBs and how I'd rank em.
1 Brady
2 Rodgers
3 Ryan
4 Brees
5 Rothlisberger
6 Wilson
7 Carr
8 Luck (I'd have him higher if he were healthy and had an Oline worth a crap
9 Eli Manning
10 Rivers
11 Marriota
12 Newton
13 Prescott Hard to gauge him on that team he's on he might end up higher too
14 Stafford
15 Cousins You could make an argument he should go ahead of Mariota but I can't put him in top 10 I just can't..
16 Alex Smith
17 Palmer
I wouldn't argue with your list but how many on your list are available to the 49ers. They'll have a chance for Cousins or someone coming out of college which is a 50/50 shot.

How much time does Lynch/Shannonhan have to rebuild this roster?
I'm guessing 3 yrs... I think they both got like 5 or 6 yr deals but we all know that's irrelevant. If they are still a dumpster fire through the end of 3 yrs then I bet that's it. Their owner just fired two coaches back to back after just a year. I think he'll have a little patience now to actually let these guys rebuild. But yet 3 yrs always seems to be the over under for it. (Their GM Baalke was the main problem they had besides coaches now that he's gone I can see progress actually being made)

That's the thing it is really really rare for a top Qb to hit the open market. Most develop them through the draft regardless of what round they are picked. Going down that list those guys are scattered all over the place on what rounds they were taken. If your a team do you want to dump a ton of money into Cousins who's almost 30. Hope he stays healthy and can play with a new group of teammates? Or do you develop CJ or anybody else you might draft next year and know you'll have some growing pains for a couple yrs but have a much cheaper QB for 4 yrs (rookie deals are 3 or 4 yrs locked in way below market value prices for good players) CJ since he's a 3rd rounder probably isn't making 1 mill a year and wouldn't be till maybe his 4th yr of the deal.
Derek Carr just broke the bank with Oakland. He was a 2nd round pick I think and wasn't making a whole lot.. Now he's like the highest paid QB pretty much. But Oakland got 3 yrs of really good QB play for a fraction of what he was worth. Now he'll probably be overpaid the rest of his career... Much like Cousins it's just how it goes.

I guess the more I think about it here's my take. If your a team on the cusp of going from just making the playoffs to making a run at the Superbowl and your just a QB away from it then you go the free agent route. (Denver a few yrs back with Manning) But if your a rebuilding team like the 9ers are and you have a ton of other positions that need upgrading/developing then I wouldn't go the free agent route on a QB. It could slow down the rebuilding process just based on money available cap wise to improve roster big time. Is getting Cousins next year going to take the Niners to the NFC Championship game with this roster? Nobody would take that bet so how on earth could Cousins be worth such a huge salary? He's not a draw fan wise or anything. So I guess that's just my long 2 cent rant on it

Jeff Fisher got seven years on the Rams so who knows what ownership wants.

Let's see how CJ looks in preseason games. He's gonna get a lot of looks.

If they didn't think he could challenge for the backup role they wouldn't say it, even with the propensity of coaches to blow smoke about so and so player just to sound positive.

Yeah Fisher got a lot of run for taking the Titans to the Superbowl. I think he was pretty over rated. But he got to coach a long time in the league.

The Niners owner since he got rid of Harbaugh has had a quick trigger finger with coaches. But he was trying to match up coaches with his hand picked GM Baalke who'd been there a long time. That's tough to do. Now they have a complete clean slate so we'll see how it goes.

Yeah the preseason games will be interesting. CJs gotten reps with the 1s a little. And splitting 2 reps with Barkley from what's been reported lately. So for sure it'll be interesting who plays more throughout the games and how they do.
I also heard Kittle hurt his ankle and might not play this first game even... So that sucks he was listed as #2 TE

First of many I hope. CJ has made such a great first impression I wonder at what point he gets out there during regular season. Hoyer is not Aaron Rodgers by any means... There are a handful of rookie QBs all getting love from the media most probably aren't as close to playing as CJ may be.. But due to where they were drafted they are all getting talked about a ton. Any of them have a higher QBR then what CJs done so far? I doubt it.

So the niners drafted him to be a backup for the next however many years. With the notion that they would go get either Kirk Cousins or draft the kid from USC in this next off-season. If they get lightning in a bottle, cool. Beathard has the grit and toughness to be a very longtime nfl backup. As a niners fan, make no mistake, they're going after Cousins and if they don't land him the kid from USC next year, Beathard is meant to be the backup.

You could have said the same thing about Cousins when he was drafted in 2012. He was a 4th round pick, and he was selected the year after they took a Heisman trophy winner with the #2 overall pick.

Football is a funny sport, if you outproduce the guy in front of you, then you win the job. Cousin's did it to Robert Griffin III and CJ could do it as well.

Not to pick nips but Cousins was taken at the top of the 4th round I think. But yeah your right about him being just an afterthought/insurance type of pick for RG3. They didn't take him hoping for what ended up happening...

Basically where your drafted is pointless unless your a top pick or taken just way higher than expected based on expecations. I don't think there's a difference between treatment of a kid that's a late 2nd round pick and a 7th rounder fighting for the same job. These coaches want to keep their jobs as long as possible. Playing the best players is what does that and they don't get much time to rebuild a bad team anymore. You have to show improvement in a couple years it seems like or your shown the door in the NFL

Sorry, yes, he was a 4th round pick, I corrected that. Thanks!

I remembered at the time people even saying what were they doing taking him there... I can't remember a team taking a QB so high and then another one like that.... Then for it to work out like it did is pretty crazy. I can't see Cousins staying there long term. He says all the PC things but for crying out loud he's turned down offers not many others would.. He just wants out of there I think. Knowing he'll have multiple teams willing to break the bank for him sure doesn't hurt either..

I believe they were both drafted in 2012. Which is why many thought Cousins was "actually" their primary choice, but wanted to see if RG III panned out. But regarding qb's and the NFL, in general, unless you have a contract that pays you to be the starter for a given team, you will always have to be looking over your shoulder. Every draft and free-agent season means you could be replaced.
