BTT.. Michigan Again?

I was looking ahead to the Big Ten Tournament and looking at the standings and remaining conference games. Here are the current standings:

TEAM CONF. W-L OVERALL W-L
Ohio State 13-4 23-7
Purdue 12-4 24-4
Michigan State 12-4 22-7
Wisconsin 11-5 21-7
Illinois 10-6 18-11
Minnesota 8-8 17-11
Northwestern 7-10 18-11
Michigan 6-10 13-15
Iowa 4-12 10-19
Indiana 3-13 9-19
Penn State 3-13 11-17

As it stands, Michigan is 8th, and we are 9th.

Michigan's remaining games: Minnesota, @MSU
Northwestern's remaining games: @Indiana
Iowa's remaining games: @Wisconsin, @Minnesota
Indiana's remaining games: @Purdue, Northwestern
Penn State's remaining games: @MSU, Purdue

Michigan may have a chance against Minnesota at home, but I anticipate NW winning @Indiana and staying 1 game ahead of Michigan for 7th.

I think Iowa has seen it's last regular season win.

Ditto for Indiana and PSU.

I think it mainly depends on what Michigan and NW the rest of the way out, but I hate to say it: It appears we may be on a crash-course with a first round BTT game with Michigan.

I know that gives us all the warm-fuzzies. It's either our chance to exercise some BTT demons, or another quick exit. :(

I don't know how we get lined up with these guys every year. Unbelievable.. Anybody know what the tie-breaker is if Michigan and NW tie in the standings?

i don't mind the matchup... in fact, i think it's the only chance iowa has for a meaningful win. think about it: at this point, beating indiana or penn state isn't going to mean much (sure, a win's a win, especially when you only have 10 of them, but it wouldn't really tell us much about the team). those are basically lose-lose scenarios-- they are the only teams iowa can beat without impressing anyone.

beating northwestern would be fine but nothing is going to wash away the stink of that beatdown in evanston. no one was impressed when iowa crushed them at carver and nw's loss to penn state just makes them look even worse.

a matchup with michigan gives the hawks a chance to get over the hump against a team that has given them fits but that they almost beat at home. it would give them something to build on and a nice way to measure their progress over the last few months.

(yeah, i know, what progress? i'm just saying that watching them play michigan in the btt is probably the best way to evaluate this team.)

To me, the season is almost over and it is what it is. A win against a sub-500 Michigan squad doesn't change much for me. I'll honestly be more concerned about keeping the season alive than anything else at that point.

Although I agree it would be nice if we could finally beat Michigan in the BTT and get that monkey off our backs. I believe they are the only team we are yet to beat in the BTT.

Also, to this point, Steve Alford is the only Iowa coach to actually ever win a game in the BTT. That's another thing I would like to see change soon.

I would rather be the 10th seed than the 9th. You play NW rather than Michigan and while I say NW is a better club I say the chances of beating either are the same given the matchups. If somehow you survive the 1st round you have a shot at Purdue without Hummel vs having to play OSU who is really clicking. If PSU gets the 10th seed than they could very easily end up in the semis.

This is the correct answer. I want to play whoever gives us a chance to get to Purdue, the only top team vulnerable to a giant upset right now due to Hummel's injury. If we somehow get to friday vs Purdue, do the improbable, then get Illinois on Saturday....I can dream of finally meeting and beating the illini in the BTT(only team we have not played in the BTT). Then get to Sunday vs OSU and get creamed...its a BTT traditon,we always play OSU in the title game..(1-1)...go hawks.

Deshawn Sims owes us a 2-20, 5pts, 6 rebs, and 7 TO's kind of performance. I'm not holding my breath.
