BTN at practice this morning

If we only had a WR with some speed....like Willies

Seriously, who is our deep threat? Smith? Has he ever been a deep threat for us? Seems like he's more of a McNutt/DJK type player, where he's better in space and can create separation after the catch.

We had Powell as well the last two years but we rarely used him.

I'm struggling to think of anyone else on the roster where we can go over the top? We have the QB to try, but do we have anyone to run under the ball?

The lack of a deep threat wasn't necessarily on the receivers.

A podcast on Hawk Central talked about the short passing game. Morehouse and the other guy both said that they expect that to be a successful part of the offense because CJ will get the ball out faster and give the receiver a better chance to pick up yards after catch. Rudock, on the other hand, was often late withe the throw and did not have the arm to deliver the ball quickly. The podcasters both claimed that if done properly, this play will often gain 7 yards and not the 0-3 we were used to seeing with JR. Remains to be seen, but what they say does make sense. I recall watching other teams use this short game successfully against Iowa and often coming up 2nd and 3 or 4. Fans of CJ will soon see if he can change the success ratio in the short passing game with his reportedly stronger arm; I am hoping they are right.

Couldn't agree more. How many deep balls to the top QBs in the NFL throw? What was Brady's biggest criticism? Lack of a strong arm. What was Manning's biggest criticism? Inability to throw the deep ball. Look at all the top QBs - none of them are really "throw the bomb" types. As a group, the top QBs throw more the quick hitters with yards after the catch... because they anticipate their receivers getting open and hit them when they ARE open instead of throwing the ball when they are open.

But...if only we had Willies....

Nevermind we had zero threat from a breakaway run and a qb who had a proclivity against risky deep passes.

Don't you remember those 2-3 catches Willies had in games, they were magnificent. Then KF ran him off the team by not targeting/playing more, and then having the gall to put stipulations on him returning to the team, after he quit.

Interesting theory on the short passing by NFL quarterbacks. Only problem with that is we don't have any NFL QBs at Iowa. In fact name just one QB that KF coached as a head coach at Iowa that EVER started any regular season NFL game...... Ever??? Needless to say the QB position is not KFs strong point.

Thank goodness we are working so hard spending countless hours on our short passing game. You never know when you'll want a 3 yard completion on a 3rd and 7. Those come in very handy when it comes to field position and giving our 37 yrd per punt punter plenty of room to pin opponents back to the 50 yard line.

Sounds like status quo for Kirk and the offense. CJ has been beaten into submission and will be too afraid to make a mistake, like Jake before him and Vandy before him.

A very disheartening update from BTN.

I doubt CJ is afraid to make a mistake, he plays like he is so in the moment it is like playing in the very second he sees something on the field.

And CJ doesnt have to worry about getting pulled or benched unless KF wants to put in a totally green, less skilled backup.

Get the running game going and start using some trickery, misdirection, and novel play calling.

True but those guys are known for their accuracy. Hoping CJ can get that under control.

Come on. I get that you don't like KF but give me a break.

The part in bold has been a struggle for Iowa Football under KF. I think most people actually were good with the KOK scheme, it was just the predictable play calling that people got tired of. Now we have a worse scheme and even more predictable play calling. When may 11 year old son sits at the game and calls the plays consistently correctly based on the formation and the situation, you know you aren't fooling anyone. And KF will tell you they aren't trying to. It's all about execution. Puke.

I remember 2 years ago they visited all 12 schools in something like 12 days. and Iowa was the last school they visited on day 12 of the tour. Boy that was some worthless commentary, not attempting to hide they were tired, worn out, and ready to go home.

then after the spring game disapeared from the BTN last year, I have not attempted to watch anything on BTN outside of football season ever since then.

that's what it was, no coverage of the spring game. That was total buulsheet.

I don't think people give Brady or Manning enough credit on their deep passing ability. Were they the strongest arms in the league? Nope. But Manning had Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, guys that could get deep. They weren't catching all their TD passes from the 20 yard and in.

Brady had Moss. Moss pretty much ran deep and that was it. They set all sorts of records together.

But I get your point about Iowa. Jake didn't really ever try to throw deep, unless we came off a game where he didn't throw the ball over 10 yards and people started to complain.

I still think he was coached against it.

Lol. I thought I had the sarcasm pretty thick in there. Adam, I am a pretty big "apologist". Cmon man, you're not that new round here.

There are plenty of haters on here too so it's hard to tell the sarcasm posts from the actual ones (there are some serious ones in this thread that aren't too different from yours). Hard to keep track sometimes. My bad!

I think it's pretty typical of btn to come in and say great things about the teams they are visiting. And when you see less than great things, i.e interior line is a little undersized, qb is a little inaccurate and needs to add some touch, offensive tackles young, etc.... Look out, as in look out in a not so good way.

No worries. Just ready for the season. Sometimes the conjecture and repetitive nature gets to me.
