At least the short passing game seems to be working...

Beathard on time and on target in underneath game today - question with Iowa offense will be where the explosion comes from.

If we only had a WR with some speed....like Willies

Seriously, who is our deep threat? Smith? Has he ever been a deep threat for us? Seems like he's more of a McNutt/DJK type player, where he's better in space and can create separation after the catch.

We had Powell as well the last two years but we rarely used him.

I'm struggling to think of anyone else on the roster where we can go over the top? We have the QB to try, but do we have anyone to run under the ball?

Am I correct, did the BIG completely leave Iowa out of their fall training shows last year? Iowa didn't get any coverage last year, did they?

Saw this tweet and the KF quote saying CJ "has grown by 5 years". Wondering if the two go together. Has KF finally reigned in CJ?

No worries ... everyone knows derKirkFeravis is merely keeping things close to the vest whilst the BTN is in town. Don't want to tip your hand on national TV!

This is good for Hawk fans and the potential success of the season -- Don't show too much; fly under the radar, then ... PAZOWIE ... Hawks sneak up on ya when no one expected it.

FACT: derKirkFeravis does their best work when least expected. Based on what BTN is shown (or ... NOT shown ... hee, hee, hee;)) and this irrefutable historical trend, smart money would say Hawks will probably have a season for the ages, surpassing even Hawknick's expectations.

Remember last year when the BTN guys were saying that Rudock was the best QB they'd seen in camp at throwing the ball down the field........

Yeah that really came to fruition!

I wondered how long it would take for someone to post this. I sincerely hope you are being sarcastic. KF has been holding his offense back for three years now and waiting for the right moment to unleash it.

He is a control freak and wouldn't know what to do with the offense if he had the best offensive line, QB, and wide receivers in all of college football. He probably thinks Viagra is a shampoo that makes his hair STIFF.

If I was stupid enough to play Rudock over CJ and was about to get exposed, I would say things like that too.

Undersized at the DT? Aren't Jaleel and Faith both 300+? I understand if they meant DE..

Yeah I was somewhat confused by that comment as well. Jaleel and Faith are both big boys. Jaleel is a bear and Faith is all muscle. Behind them I guess you could say there is a size drop off, but nothing major in my opinion. However, DT is a position where the players are rotated in and out quite frequently. Especially if they are big guys like Carl Davis was, and Jaleel is. The backups will be seeing a significant amount of playing time. Bazata is 6'2 284 and Terlouw is 6'4 288. That isn't small in my opinion.

The only one I would consider "small" on the defensive line is Nate Meier. He's been undersized his whole career, and quite frankly I think he needs to step his game up or Matt Nelson should take over his starting role. Maybe mix Meier in on passing downs. He has been a bit of a liability in the running game at times and it's difficult not to believe his size has something to do with it. If I'm an offensive coordinator with a solid line and good back you can be damn sure I'm going to run away from Drew Ott and towards the DE who is 6'2 250.

I remember 2 years ago they visited all 12 schools in something like 12 days. and Iowa was the last school they visited on day 12 of the tour. Boy that was some worthless commentary, not attempting to hide they were tired, worn out, and ready to go home.

then after the spring game disapeared from the BTN last year, I have not attempted to watch anything on BTN outside of football season ever since then.

Thank goodness we are working so hard spending countless hours on our short passing game. You never know when you'll want a 3 yard completion on a 3rd and 7. Those come in very handy when it comes to field position and giving our 37 yrd per punt punter plenty of room to pin opponents back to the 50 yard line.

Sounds like status quo for Kirk and the offense. CJ has been beaten into submission and will be too afraid to make a mistake, like Jake before him and Vandy before him.

A very disheartening update from BTN.

A podcast on Hawk Central talked about the short passing game. Morehouse and the other guy both said that they expect that to be a successful part of the offense because CJ will get the ball out faster and give the receiver a better chance to pick up yards after catch. Rudock, on the other hand, was often late withe the throw and did not have the arm to deliver the ball quickly. The podcasters both claimed that if done properly, this play will often gain 7 yards and not the 0-3 we were used to seeing with JR. Remains to be seen, but what they say does make sense. I recall watching other teams use this short game successfully against Iowa and often coming up 2nd and 3 or 4. Fans of CJ will soon see if he can change the success ratio in the short passing game with his reportedly stronger arm; I am hoping they are right.

the BTN Crew stopped in Iowa City today. Here is a collection of what they saw and said: http://hawkeyenation.com/football/btn-visits-iowa-city

Say it aint so Joe. This from the link Jon posted

akble • 3 hours ago in his BTNT article Dienhart lead with this about Bethard also - The 6-2, 209-pound junior showed a cannon. But he seems to lack touch—and his accuracy could be sharper - See more at: http://btn.com/2015/08/11/5-th... Pretty much sounds like the same Bethard of the last two years and why he was not the starter.
Hopefully today was not typical of his improvement but rather just a step back.

I love the idea of using short passes in place of the run. Our problem is we still try to keep a 50/50 run pass attack so our short passes pretty much replace all longer passes.
