Brian Ferentz, Phil Parker Press Conference Transcripts

Belichick rarely says anything in his pressers. Saban deflects any challenging questions. It seems like a waste of time to use press conference responses to evaluate a coach's ability or the team's progress.

I seem to recall that a couple of years ago Fran was praised for his "detailed and insightful" responses to the media, ... don't see that any more.

At my age I go to sleep pretty easily these days and I could have slept through it too :)
Lol
Well he did praise Nate a little and he did say he understands his duties a little better.
Like I said I get playing it close to the vest, and maybe he was trying to lite a fire under our wr's, but his view is a lot different than Copeland's.
On a scale of 1-10 it did sound like maybe our wr's we're at a 7 and pushing for an 8, but after yesterday it sounds more like a solid 5, just average.
But I really didn't think much of the questions, or how they were asked either. It almost sounded like press from other teams were asking questions to try and figure out our scheme and how will will line up.
Don't get me wrong, because I love the technical side of football, but most fans don't know or care and it made the whole thing a snooze fest.
Basically just tell them how each offensive group is coming along, sing some praise for the stand outs and call it a day. The people who follow football close will get what they need and the ones who don't will be satisfied. Nobody cares about Star Wars, nobody cares about the air raid is fascinating. As for rpo, anyone that doesn't understand how the game works, well it's not your job to educate them. It's lost on most fans anyway.

His dad is Kirk Ferentz and he coached under Belichick. What should we expect?
This went beyond that. KF has decent analogies.
It reminded me of my HS history teacher, I don't mind history, but when he started going on and on, I couldn't hardly stay awake. In the end I didn't learn much of anything.
He will get better at it, but wowsers. I didn't think he had ever done a bad job before, so I don't know if it was the questions or him over reaching or what.

Read Chad L. on Hawk Central. Read Rob H. on Hawkeye Nation. You probably won't listen, but there is some good stuff there about Brian's remarks.
#1 it's their job to try and find something to write.
#2 they always put their own read or spin on things.
Who in their right mind had to be told that it helps when a team (the entire team) understands what it is they are trying to do. How to adjust if the parameters change.
That's the story line?? Wow. News flash, water is wet!!

Over on Hawk Central there is an article that confirms that KOK and Copeland had said about the receivers, yet you didn't hear that from Brian. He made it sound like we are closer to the same as the last few years than we are to where we want to be.
Sounds like we might have an ok ol but any injury could be a problem. Same as always.
We are young at rb. Again water is wet.

OK. I get it. So, what would you have liked to hear from Brian?

Basically read any other coaches presser. Like I said, you tell them how the group as a whole is progressing, then you sing a little praise for who is standing out.
He pretty much did that with the Ol question. Yeah it's more of the same, but it satisfies the masses and for people who really pay attention it gives them enough to put the pieces together.
I mean really, only the masses needed to be told we are good and deep at DE. Everyone on here already knew that. However letting us know who has been taking snaps in the middle was useful information. Maybe not to the masses, because they don't care.
See, you satisfy everyone that way.

That's a pretty lazy way out.
Not really. I read Brian's transcript and it was, for me, hard to follow at times. Maybe I just wasn't reading well. When I read Chad's and Rob's explanations, I thought they were pretty clarifying, at least for me. I just don't understand what people want to hear from coaches when they address the media. I would love to have someone give me examples. I have listened to other head coaches on Sirius Radio and I really cannot tell the difference between what KF typically says and what any other head coach says.

I guess I was also expecting to hear a lot of negatives about Brian's comments based on the posters who seem to be critical of the coaching staff no matter what. I suppose you can criticize me for wearing rose colored glasses; but those who insist on wearing blinders as to any positives get really annoying.

Read Phil's transcript or watch the video on YouTube.

Any of James Franklin's pressers.

Any of Luke Walton's pressers if you don't want to stick to football.

There's some examples, need more?

That's the deal, if you listen to them (for me anyway) you get very good at picking up on things.
You have to realize that just like most people 99% of their words have very little meaning, it's just filler.
Someone said in another post how the comment about the phone very much resembles the comment about Wadley's weight. I thought that right away. That is KF saying hey I think you could be special, you are going to have to work on some stuff however.
But you have to listen and read a little between the lines. The casual fan could spin it to the kid sucks and isn't serious or however they want, but I don't think that was what he was saying at all. I think he was saying focus kid and you can become what we see you as.
We already knew he has a little talent and we heard he has some speed.
I on the other hand have no idea what to make of Brian's comments about Brandon. We hear he could be a force to reckon with, we understand that until he proves it he is really an unknown. What was the comment about single coverage? Does that mean nobody is going to respect him enough to worry? Does that mean if he is in single coverage he is going to burn people? It didn't give any indication of his progress or how he can get better at all.

Who's improving, who's maybe not so much.

What he's doing to avoid yet another year of crap offense. Except for "We need to get better" ad nauseum.

How he's going to handle another year of not having a WR corps.

How the scheme might or should be different to adapt to weak receiving and a greenhorn OL.

How a 2 TE set might look or operate with Fant and Hockensen. (Hint, he got asked that by Land of 10 and completely went on an unrelated tangent)

Check out this gem:

At the end of the day, the No. 1 metric we’re looking at to figure out if we’re where we need to be offensively is are we winning games or are we losing them,” Ferentz said.

Jesus Christ man, are you kidding me, @HuckFinn? The number one metric if we're where we need to be is if we're winning games or losing them? You'll get a smarter football answer out of a third grader.

While we're on this subject, can we get rid of those ridiculous end of the half interviews where the interviewer ends up following the coach three fourths of the way to the locker room?

No coach is going to say anything of value at that moment and few are in the mood to do it. And the sideline reporter isn't going to ask anything of substance anyway.

I think the networks are simply looking for the opportunity to get a coach to lose his composure so that they have a story on their hands. Basketball isn't any better, either. Most of those coaches look like their training for the Boston Marathon when the microphone gets stuck in their face at that moment.

You have a good point. Funny but true. My favorite brand of humor.

Thanks. Sense of humor is a very difficult thing to get across in anonymous print.

And mine is very sardonic.:p

What you can't hear is the deadpan in the voice. What you can't see is the straight face.

Here are a few of the fabulous responses from the press conference. This has to be astoundingly frustrating for reporters trying to get some substantive football answers or information.

How does anyone read this crap and not think the guy is either Crazy Bob Diaco or some really, really bad life coach stealing your money?

"...when the games were close, we found a way to win those games, and I don’t know if there’s a metric to measure that,”

"I just think it comes down to playing good football and executing at the level you’re capable of executing at, whatever that is."

"At the end of the day, the No. 1 metric we’re looking at to figure out if we’re where we need to be offensively is are we winning games or are we losing them,”

"The main thing is just trying to do a better job of putting our football team in a position to be successful and to have a chance to succeed."

"I think the biggest thing for me is learning how to do a better job of maximizing the role I’m in now because it was new to me a year ago."

"You can look at a thousand things, but I think at the end of the day, what you’re trying to do is make sure you’re doing things you need to do to win ballgames."

"What do we need to do? We need to be consistent. We need to execute at a high level."

"...just trying to make sure that we’re using the right pieces the best way that we can and trying to give ourselves a chance to win."
