Brian Ferentz interview

In the Purdue game I believe they ran one run play. I counted 6 stretch runs to the short side in a row. That loss was 110% on the OC. Oh ya, and the inability to adjust to the mid range ball to the left receiver.

Some interesting remarks.

BF considers Stanley a top 8 QB....
in the Big Ten! Well that's a start anyway in getting Stanley some recognition.

Iowa basically only runs 3 running plays, but trys to disguise what play they are running.

BF plans to coach from the sidelines in 2018 instead of the press box. I guess he already did that once in the Pinstripe bowl. That probably means KOK will be moved upstairs to be the eyes in the sky. Of course this time last year BF said he was going to coach from the sidelines then changed his mind and coached from the box the entire regular season. So you never know for sure if he is going to stick with this decision or not.

I like Brian. I think he has real personality. He is always delivering some interview gems. Unlike his father which you could literally script, Brian is more of a wild card. You don't have any idea what he is going to say. Personally I like this trait in a coach.

Unlike many of you on here. I sincerely hope that Brian has and continues to develop the skills necessary to be a great coach. There could be gold in the hills if Brian is able to pull this whole thing together. To successfully replace your father at a major coaching position and string together 20+ years of continuity, history, and tradition just has a mythical, magical feel about it. I could see it being something that could thrust Iowa to new and unprecedented heights. I could also see it being a train wreck. As with most things the bigger the risk the bigger the potential reward.

Everyone complains that our program is soft and stale under the captain's steady hand. I believe the next few years and the yet unwritten story about the Ferentz family legacy could very well be one of the most interesting sports stories currently available. I don't see 1 thing stale about it.

I am not rooting against Brian but part of me wishes he moves on and finds successes in the NFL instead as an assistant and head coach. I hope James Ferentz then joins him as an NFL head coach just like the Harbaugh brothers.

Of course this won't solve the "problem" of Kirk trying to groom his son to the next head coach at Iowa. Just like Gypsy Rose Lee, Kirk will start grooming Stephen to be the next Ferentz assistant. Kirk will sign another extension to 2030 to prepare him.

Lol sounds like rooting against to me.

The main strike against Brian Ferentz is his relative lack of experience. Most guys with Brian's level of experience at offensive coordinator are cutting their teeth at a MAC or MVC school. We don't know what he has, and I'm not sure KF and the rest of the staff yet know either.

Brian has the advantage of thoroughly knowing the teams system through and though, having played in it, coached in it, and lived it much of his life.

The talent at tight end was employed well last year. I would expect offensive line play to be closer to its usual level of proficiency next year. They're still trying to get it together at receiver, which never quite worked out under Davis.

The big question over all is going to be, Is Brian Ferentz going to be able to take his fathers base offense and produce something that asserts itself on opposing defenses. Past Kirk Ferentz offenses have taken advantage of opportunities well, and managed the game reasonably well, but they have have tended to lack the ability to assert themselves and get opposing defenses back on their heels.

As someone stated above, Brian is playing everyone with these comments. As Kirk has said numerous times (tongue firmly planted in cheek), he's more like his mother. He kind of wears everything on his sleeves, which is refreshing. It's kind of fun watching him grow into this role.

One thing is for sure, the development of the offense this season will be interesting to watch. Now that his offense has had a chance to be fully implemented, and with the return of a QB that now (presumably) has it down, I think a lot of fans are going to be pleasantly surprised. We'll still be a run-first-ball-control offense, but I'm guessing we will see much more of the "pop" plays involving the TEs and the RBs out of the backfield. A little more "take what the defense gives you" approach. I also predict that we will see a wider variety of tempo changes as well.

Will it all work? I guess we'll find out, but I can't wait for football season to get here.

Maybe we'll get to see another nail biting finish during the UNI game. Can't wait!

BF coached the last 4 or 5 minutes of that Ohio State game from the sidelines!!!

If he does what was reported, I'm sure the media will notice.

No different than Phil Parker, and you watch the replay of that Minnesota game before the half and you will visually see KF dropping two F bombs loudly at the refs. Unmistakeable.

Phil has the biggest potty mouth on the staff bar none... KF does when he's fired up like that but with Phil it's an all the time thing. He has a tough time not cussing in media interviews. It's just his normal way of talking

And I think BF alluded to it in his first memories of PP when BF was a young player. I bet you PP is as nice off the field as tough as he is on it though.

And a complete 180, KOK I have never seen nor heard say a swear word or yell for that matter.

I have heard both Polasek and Wallace give him a run for his money.

Are we still going to think BF has "it" if his offense finishes in the bottom 3/4 of the nation again this year?

My concern is that BF knows only one way, and that's the KF way.

What exactly was the reason for the Iowa offense to look so good against OSU, and then so bad against WI and PU?

It's the same every year.

Yeah interesting with KOK. Him I honestly don't know about. I believe it though he seems like that type of guy. I've heard PP at a coaching clinic speak before and in that setting he was dropping F bombs all over the place. It wasn't that he was mad or anything. We all know guys that just cuss a lot. That's him.

OSU played very conservative on defense. Iowa has yet to figure out Wisconsin's 3-4. I have no explanation for Purdue.
