Brian Ferentz = Big Failure

I think that anyone who believes Brian got the job for any reason other than he's the son of the head coach is practicing real self delusion. Those same people will continue to practice that self delusion when he's named head coach himself some day in the future. Unfortunately I'm about 95% sure that's what will happen.

Nothing that has happened this season is out of the ordinary for Iowa football. Kirk has always had a penchant for winning a game nobody thinks his team can while also during the same season losing a game to a putz. He has a real gift of getting his teams to play to the level of their competition; I can't explain it. This is a typical Iowa football season in my view. Iowa under Kirk is essentially a 7-5 program. Want to know how many times they've won at least 10 games in the last 13 seasons? Twice. Check out what Wisconsin has done over the same period, it'll depress you. I still say Kirk is living off the fans memories of 2002-2004; he's never come close to that kind of sustained success since.

You can blame Brian but the fish rots from the head; until Kirk is gone and an entirely new philosophy comes into the program this is what you will have. I doubt you'll get that kind of fresh look if his kid takes over though and that's almost certainly what will happen. Hey, Hawkeye fans are used to 7-5 so it will be an easy transition.

Both are to blame big time. KF never should have hired BF or put him in the position at this point in his career. BF has gotten out coached in almost all games this year due to his inability to make adjustments and develop a creative game plan. You can read the threads on hear all week that will tell you exactly what Iowa is going to do. Everyone knows it and we just keep doing it. Ohio State is the lone bright spot and we went straight back to terrible game plans with little to no adjustments. It is too bad because I think both guys are good weekday and off-season coaches with an overwhelming flaw of making game time adjustments and inability to change.

I want the Hawks to win 8+ games per season and there's no reason they can't. Unfortunately, 8 wins will be a fantasy as long as the Captain and his son are "leading" the way. This just a pathetic, garbage, worthless, talentless, no fun group of coaches and players. There isn't a single player who will be on the roster next season who will make an all B1G team. I don't see a single player on this shit roster that will get drafted after Wadley, Jewell, Jackson, etc. leave. There is literally NO hope with Ferentz in charge and this group of talentless middle school caliber players.

Why would we expect to have talent when recruiting to Iowa is "so" hard and is a grind?

Hiring BF = Nepotism
Hiring Tyler Barnes as recruiting coordinator = Nepotism.

Nepotism is toxic to any organization and should not be tolerated.

There was no national search for the most qualified candidate nationally in either case. The AD needs to be held accountable for yet another colossal HR blunder.

Taking a risk making his son the OC I thought KF would be willing to take some chances, clearly that is not the case. Imo, there is enough brain power on the offensive side to make this work, but KF has got to get his paws off of it. This late 90's, early 2000's Bronco offense doesn't work anymore.

Many seem to have forgotten that Brian named us "Bullies of the Big Ten". That counts for something, I think, maybe, kinda.

That label always bothered Kirk. It wasn't classy. Too aggressive. Now "Pussies of the Big Ten", he would be cool with that. It wouldn't offend anyone other than Hawkeye fans. And he's made it clear how much he cares about those rank amateurs.

Wow...jury is back after full deliberation. Dude sucks, bad. Can we all at least agree that BF was a terrible hire? It is pretty hard to be worse than Greg Davis but he's been way worse. Hey Brian, you had one great game, one competent game, and nine crap games. You ain't cut out for this kid...sorry you had to learn this while holding the keys to a D1 program that used to have some pride.

You do realize there is a common denominator between Davis and BF...don't you?

Sure do. KOK had offenses ranked in the 50s and KF was also the head coach then. We were ranked in the 80s with GD. We have now dropped into the 100s. So yes KF is part of the problem but he's also hired really terrible OCs.

He has hired who he wants. 50s isn't so good.

Here is the real issue.

Ferentz was the offensive line coach at The University of Iowa under Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry for nine seasons, from 1981 to 1989. Eleven Hawkeyes coached by Ferentz went on to play in the NFL. Three of them were first round picks in the NFL draft, and five of his players were first team All-Big Ten selections. Six of those players played over 100 games in the NFL: OG Ron Hallstrom, OG Mark Bortz, OT Brett Miller, C Joel Hilgenberg, OT John Alt, and OG Bob Kratch. OG Mike Haight played in 63 games as well.

Ferentz left Iowa to coach at the University of Maine in 1990. After three seasons of coaching the Black Bears to a combined 12–21 record, he was named the offensive line coach of the NFL's Cleveland Browns. Ferentz served under Bill Belichick in Cleveland and followed the franchise to Baltimore when they became the Baltimore Ravens.

Phil Parker had never been a DC in major college FB I dont think but he always had the longtime training from Norm who was great except sometimes stubbornly not blitzing some on third and long.
Phil Parker's half time adjustments leave a lot to be desired, when compared to Norm Parker.

The 2 pitches out of the endzone and the 2 qb keepers on 3rd and long.

And, not involving the backs more in the passing game.

And, about 5 too many runs on 1st/2nd down, into 8-9 man fronts per game.

And, poor screen game...or lack therof

If not for the above, I'd say solid C+. As it stands, D-....generously.

I wouldn't be sad to see him go too. But for now, his side of the ball has been the only reason this season isn't far worse. Without his D this isn't even a bowl season.

i don't know that i'd say bf is way worse than gd. our offenses were functionally beaten because of the route trees in that offense. brian is all over the road and doesn't appear to have an actual philosophy. that is a big problem. so i would give brian a D grade.

That's a grade higher than I gave him and the rest of the staff for last Saturday.
