One memory sticks out to me about covering Gatens: after every Hawkeyes home game his senior year, when nearly everyone else had gone home, he’d return the Carver-Hawkeye Arena court to sign autographs, take pictures, and casually chat with whomever beckoned. Kids, parents, whomever. Then he’d be the last guy to saunter out of the building, in no real rush.
Every game, he'd do this. Win or lose, by the way.
