Brad Rogers Impact this Year

I think Brad has a chance to play a huge, huge role this season.

He is capable of running the ball and we all know that he is an excellent blocker, in both lead and pass pro situations.

I suspect Iowa will be operating in more shotgun this season, and with Rogers in there as the one back, defenses can't just shuffle in their nickel personnel based off offensive personnel groupings the way they did with say Edgar Cervantes back in 2003.

When Fred Russell came off the field and Edgar went in, teams knew it was going to be a pass play. That's not the case with Rogers, who is probably Iowa's best running fullback since Jeremy Allen in 2001.

While we spend time wondering who is going to get reps at tailback, I think Rogers will factor in with significant carries this year in addition to two or three other tailbacks, especially early on.

I haven't seen enough of BR to know the answer to my question, but is there any way he has Shonn Greene-type ability/skillset? SG wasn't exactly the classic halfback; I always considered him more of a hybrid. What do Rogers' measureables look like?

Do your confidence points, currently at 50%, for beating Indiana go up if Brad has a huge, huge impact or if he doesn't have that impact does your confidence factor drop?

he doesnt have the top gear that sg had but hes probably similar in that ten yard burst area.

He's 5-10/230. Not the straight line speed that Greene had and Greene's vision was about the best we've seen at Iowa. O'Keefe said this about Greene back in 2008:

He has great vision. The one thing that makes him different to me is that he has great patience in the run game, and he sees things extremely well. There have been a lot of studies done in the running game, what does the running back actually see. Most of them only react to the color of the opponent. But Shonn actually can see and tell you what guys are doing, whether it’s the defender or the linemen. Somebody might not have reached the guy like he thought he could so he had to cut it back. He will tell you what the lineman did and what the defender did. When you question quarterbacks on reads, 95% of the time the coach is wrong and the player is right. In Shonn’s case, 99.9% of the time he is right. He reads it real well.

i only see rogers as a fb with 2 rbs and being a lone back in shotgun. i dont see him as a singleback if jvb is under center at all. he could keep people honest in the shotgun but i think it is more as a pass catcher than runner. though i think he would be a solid delayed hand off guy out of the shotgun as he is patient and strong.

i just remember how much better the running game looked last yr when he was at fb and it will be huge this yr with the inexperienced rbs to have a guy in front of them that creates holes like he does.

I could see him getting 6-8 touches/game, maybe even a couple more depending on circumstances.

I think he will be in some single back, which will most likely trend pass...but certainly as a single back in shotgun.

Does the history of Greg Davis suggest that he will favor--or at least actively utilize--the FB position? I don't follow texass, so I don't know what his historical pattern is.

Davis' history is very much 'scratch it where it itches'

He's done a good job of tailoring his offenses to suit his player's skill set.

when i look at a single back (under center) i look for a guy with a combo set of power and speed. jewel hampton was the ultimate single back guy to me. greene was solid here too. i look at our backs and i only see one that would possibly be solid in that and that is hill. he has the inline speed and strength to do it. the rest seem like speed backs that could get swallowed up without a lead guy. and i think rogers would struggle getting started as i dont think he has the burst. he could do it but i dont think he is our best option at that spot. probably our 2nd option at best.

We approve. :)

AIRBHG already aimed for Brad Roger's heart, literally, and failed. Brad Rogers has stood up to AIRBHG, taken AIRGHG's best shot, and stood triumphant.

Yes...give that man the ball.

I agree with Jon's first post. BR will be the primary single back for the shotgun. I also think he will do a lot of blocking and then sneaking out into the flats or behind the DL for short passes.

I think it's a stretch to compare him to Greene. Seems to have a similar build, but aside from the vision that Jon mentioned, Greene had a tremendous ability to make a move and then make another move or resume full speed. I know on EA sports you can do a juke move followed by a spin while never slowing down, but in real life it's really hard. Watch one of those 50 yard runs he had against Wisconsin and you'll see what I mean.
