When Lute Olsen took us to the Final Four, we were in the East region. We beat North Carolina State, who had a player named Hawkeye Whitney, a bald white guy, Syracuse and Georgetown to get to the Final Four......

This time the region seems to be the toughest.....

By the time the second round comes around it is tougher.....

Wherever we go, it will be Huge for the program and a thrill for me.....

Syracuse and Arizona might be the teams we really do not want to play.....

None the less, bring them on, one and all.....

I hope you weren't referring to Hawkeye Whitney as a white guy. Iowa also beat VCU.

Iowa will finish strong and finish w a higher seed than the following: michigan and Wisconsin (what on earth does Lunardi see in them?, a 4-5th place B1G team?), SDSU will suffer 1 maybe 2 losses ( they still need to play @ UNM, @UNLV, then tournament, and they of the OT win @ USU) (Utah State), look for Iowa state to suffer 2 more losses.

That is 5 above then destined to fall. See Iowa ST, MICH, and Cincinnati all suffer 20pt drubbings this wk, 2 of which were to teams outside top 25 (but Lunardi and his old school Selection Commitee use the RPI so horrific losses are a not understood and therefore not counted).

But Lunardi is a smart guy, he knows for him to look good, he uses the same antiquated methodology as the committee. So viva the RPI...

I'd almost rather play a major conference team than a Stephen F Austin type of team. Just for gut feelings really, not based on any logic other than that I've seen Missouri play and I think we could humiliate them.

Yeah, you are correct, he played for NCState, and they had a bald white guard, forget his name. It was a few years ago and yes we did beat VCU......

Still have the newspapers of all the games.....

The Philadelphia Inquirer's headline was: Best Team in the East, IOWA.....

My sister mailed me the papers.....

Thanks for the correction.....

Why are fans here so fearful of certain teams in Iowa's bracket? Iowa players and the coaching staff are not afraid of anyone. I'd like to see them play in the so-called 'toughest' bracket. It would make them tougher for the Final Four competition!

This macho way of thinking is absurd. Ask Mr. Davis how he feels having played in the "toughest" bracket so many years. How many eventual NCAA champs did we play, and LOSE to, in the second round? Anyone who knows anything about tournament play knows it is about the match ups and a little luck no matter how good you are. You don't "survive and advance" by playing the "toughest" competition and to want to do that is like having a death wish. While Fran would never be scared of anyone, I guarantee if he could chose he would place his team in the "toughest" bracket. Unbelievable! And Jack Nicholson "liked" that stupid statement? Interesting.

March 8, 1980. It's the only NCAA tournament game I've ever attended in which Iowa played. Hawkeye Whitney was incredibly frustrated that day. Lester, Brookins, Boyle, and Arnold carved up the Wolfpack. I can't remember a white bald player for N.C. State.

So you're saying Fran and co aren't shooting for a 16 seed? Chicken *****.

How many times did we play Duke or Kentucky in the second round.....

They usually won the Championship also, or at least made the Final Four.....

I still say bring them on, one and all....

Duke in 91 and 92. Duke won NC both years. Kentucky in 97 and they were runnerups. Lost to UConn in sweet sixteen in 1999 and they were Nat. Champs. Lost to Kent. in 2001 in second rd, but forgot how far they went. Don't think they made final four.

I've said it many times... I think the hawks could probably play with most teams.

My main exception is Syracuse. Their zone would tear us up. You think we struggle in the half court in the big ten... Wait til that thing is put on us. No thanks. I'd somebody else to try and handle that dirty work or wait as long as possible to face them.

I think there are two teams we need to avoid at all costs to have a run to the FF - Syracuse and Florida. We can hang with everyone else.

Agree. Florida is going to get better and better as they incorporate the 6'9'' stud who just became eligible.

On the other hand, I see Arizona as the most vulnerable #1 seed. Losing Ashley is a big, big deal. They are still uber-talented but we match up well with their length, and Dev can match with Nick Johnson. Their pg is a transfer from Duquense, who is good, but not a superstar...Mike can match up.

Florida's only weakness is FT shooting. That always comes in to play in the NCAA tourney. Last I looked they were 9th in the SEC in ft percentage. It will be tough for them to close out tight games in the tourney.

His name was Marty Head. No, for real it was. And I thought he was on Syracuse though I could be wrong.

Along with that, got Arizona in fricken Tempe in 1996 in the 2nd round.
