Boxing preview 2/18

Williams/Ishida(Showtime) – At first glance this light-middleweight fight might not spark much interest, neither fighter has made much of a name for himself in comparison to the Mayweathers/Khans/Ortizs of the boxing world, but on further inspection this fight could shape up to be very interesting. In his last five fights Williams has beaten Winky Wright, Kermit Cintron, Sergio Martinez and Erislandy Lara. Yes, Sergio Martinez, in a majority decision at the end of ’09. Martinez did came back and KO him a year later which is Williams only loss in the last four years. His other recent victories have come against quality opponents, most recently Lara, who is yet another talented fighter coming out of the Cuban boxing system. Ishida has a less impressive resume at 24-6 but is coming off a 1st round dismantling of rising middleweight James Kirkland. I suspect the Kirkland victory may have been a fluke though and predict Williams to win the fight but Ishida may be able to bring some of the flash he displayed against Kirkland.

Cloud/Campillo(Showtime) – The undercard to Williams/Ishida features two light heavyweights. This is a division, along with cruiser and heavyweight, that has been barren of big name fighters for some time now, making them the least interest generating divisions in boxing (in the US anyway). Cloud is trying to change that. He is being marketed as the great American hope for the upper divisions, but Campillo (rated 9 by ESPN) may give him some fits. If Cloud earns the victory it could set up an exciting matchup with the Hopkins/Dawson winner.

V Klitschko/ Chisora(Epix) – I expect this to be another one up and another one down for the Klitschko’s, whose dominance over the heavyweight division is unprecedented but many argue this is due to lack of quality opponents. Chisora is shooting for the KO, predicting it will come in the 8th round but don’t expect anything out of character for Klitschko who, along with his brother, has been systematically dismantling opponents for years. To Chisoras credit, he did lose his last match against Helenius in a split decision but it was a hometown gift for Helenius as any objective observer of that fight would have had Chisora the winner. I do like that Epix continues to buy heavyweight matchups to broadcast in the US. Hopefully they have Dan Rafael from ESPN commentating again as his insight is always no BS and right on. Klitschko should not have much trouble with Chisora and the fight feels more like a set up fight for a bigger match, the only problem is there is no one to set him up against except his brother, and that’s not going to happen.

Love watching Williams fights. He is nonstop punching, but I really think that Martinez knock-out took something out of him. Luckily, Ishida will not process a power threat as he will have to be punching up because Williams is so tall for the weight class. Williams by easy decision.

Cloud is aggressive and fun to watch. Middle round stoppage and he gets the winner of Dawson/Hopkins.

I have been the biggest hater of the Klitschkos, but it's hard to argue their dominance. I'm actually glad they have decided not to fight each other.

Also for those enthusiasts, Showtime Extreme now shows the undercard for their fights on Showtime. Begins tomorrow 7PM Iowa time.
HBO needs to now follow suit and get more fights on the air. Many good fights aren't seen just because they aren't big names yet.

I miss the days of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN and weekly fight cards on USA. I used to know most of the fighters out there...champs as well as journeymen. Now...hardly any.

It's sad that pay per view and Showtime/HBO (not to mention Don King) have been slowly killing the sport for years. I'm not sure boxing will ever regain any semblance of popularity.

The sport needs several things: fewer "titles", more exposure to the masses (as Top Rank Boxing used to be) and a popular heavyweight. The Klitschko's are a joke. Holmes, Ali, or any of the big name heavyweights of the past would destroy them.

I long for the days of Ali, Holmes, Foreman, Hagler, Leonard, Little Red Lopez, Duran, Hearns, Mancini, Arquello, etc.

Unfortunately, UFC crap has taken boxing's place.

There is from time to time Top Rank on FSN/CSN but not near what it used to be. Also now, NBC Sports Network has 3 more dates for this year. The March 24 card looks to be pretty good for a new network.

I am sorry, but when the first paragraph says that Paul Williams hasn't made as big a name for himself as say VICTOR ORTIZ the piece died for me. Any boxing fan of any worth knows that Paul Williams is 10x the fighter Ortiz is. Any guy who quits on his stool without a doctor directing is not a fighter. Period.

Understandable, but I wasn't saying Ortiz is a better or more skilled fighter, only that his name is more recognizable. He had the fight with Mayweather, and how it ended added to his exposure, good or bad. Also the thing with Kobe's wife after the fight added more, again good or bad. So the casual sports fan is more likely to recognize Ortiz even if only by name, if you disagree with that, well, good for you.

And I don't even like Ortiz so I'm not normally one to defend him, quitting and the interview he gave in the ring after were pathetic, but his fight with Berto was at least somewhat redeeming.

I forgot about that KO until you mentioned it. That was nasty, I agree it may have taken a little something out of him. Some boxers can get over a hit like that and some can't. We'll see how aggressive he is in the ring.

Here's that knockout...GOODNIGHT!

Chisora acted proper during the fight but before he was a punk and after with his very descriptive death threats to David Haye. Police were waiting to arrest him. He would be a champ if it weren't for the Klitshcko's.
Showtime Extreme just had some fireworks with Chris Arreola looking great with a HUGE 1st round KO. He still needs to work on his post fight interview skills as he dropped "He's a (french-king a-hole) racist." When referencing Don King. Arreola is a guy though with his re-dedication that will remain a contender and when one or both of the Klitshcko's decide to hang up the gloves. He is already the #1 WBC contender(which doesn't necessarily mean much). I see him possibly being able to compete with Povetkin. He is on the cusp of being with the top of the 2nd tier in the heavyweight division.
Great action thus far on the debut night of showing under under cards on Showtime Extreme!

The slap-heard-round-the-internet generated some excitement for that fight for sure, Chisora actually looked pretty decent in there too. Too bad he's such a wildcard outside the ring. A fight with Haye could be interesting though.

I did like the undercard being available on Showtime Extreme, a great idea that is working well so far. Get on board HBO!

I'd like to see Williams-Kirkland. I think that's the best Williams can hope for with Alvarez locked into 5/5 and supposedly getting a shot at Mayweather with a victory. Also, with Martinez fighting 3/17 with the WBC supposedly forcing Chavez to fight him after victory, the cupboard is bare for Williams. Kirkland will be a big test for both fighters, with both of them having every reason to put it all on the line.

As far as the Cloud decision, while I thought Campillo did enough to earn the victory I wasn't surprised by the decision, which says alot about the competency of judges in boxing. They mentioned the experience (or lack thereof) of the judges throughout the fight and it really showed in the decision. The 114-112 was somewhat understandable. But 116-110??? That was pathetic. There have been way too many ridiculous decisions from judges recently and it gives the sport a black eye. Most jump to the conclusion that there is corruption involved, I'm not going to make any assumptions like that but the fact is at least one of those judges was not competent enough to be working a championship fight.

All in all, some pretty entertaining fights, got a little bit of everything. Really looking forward to the Maidana and Broner fights next weekend. I'll start another thread for those later in the week.

Apparently the brawl after the fight at the post fight news conference between Chisora and David Haye was more entertaining. Haye hit Chisora with a beer bottle, Chisora said he was going to shoot and burn Haye. Both were arrested. Klitscho just watched it all and laughed. You can't make his stuff up, google or YouTube it.
