Talk about a team leader. He took it upon himself to organize this to better gel as a unit. This makes me feel pretty good about this situation with him leading the offense.
IMO, if there is something Iowa has been kind of missing the past couple of QB's, its the QB being vocal an leading. Heck, I'm not even sure they were captains when I think about it.

The guy reminds me a lot of Ken O'Keefe. O'Keefe used to work, within the rules of course, to get guys on the same page in the offseason. QBs working on mechanics under the tutelage of an expert, WRs working with the QBs on timing, stuff like that. This is great that we brought that energy back into the program.

I believe Stanley and Petras were both captains. To your point tho, Stanley wasn't the most vocal guy in the world and Spencer's performance on the field made it hard to rally the troops around him.

A tiny bit of this is that it gives CM an opportunity to stick it to Michigan. He left on good terms with everyone in Ann Arbor, but he still wants to give them the metaphorical middle finger. Obviously, Iowa has to handle their business in the West and Michigan has to beat OSU for a 3rd year in a row, but you know he wants to rip their heart out in a BIG title game.
Iowa's QBs are usually elected captains. One of the oddest things about Petras' 3 years as a starter at Iowa was that I don't believe he was ever elected captain. Personally, I think it was probably because the players saw the same thing during practices that we saw as fans on Saturdays: a QB who could very easily have been replaced at any time by another QB on the roster. And you'd hate to see your captain sitting on the bench. The only other explanation would be his personality, and as fans we certainly saw no problem with that or his commitment to the program. It would be an interesting question for the media to ask the players, sometime after Petras has left.

Based on what I saw of McNamara when he was at Michigan (when healthy), you are getting a very athletic, intelligent QB with very quick feet in the pocket, a quick release and pretty good accuracy.
Iowa is going to move the ball if the 5 starters on the OLine can execute. It really is that simple. Can we block people? We didn't do it last year; hopefully we see a big improvement this year.
If we block, this is going to be an 8 or 9 win team minimum, contending for a Big West title and a good bowl game. The quarterback, tight ends, receivers and running backs are all in place and ready to go.

I think he's no less athletic then what Tate was. Maybe even faster straight line speed wise. If he has half the pocket presence and ability to avoid the rush (he may need it) that Tate did he'll be perfect for what we do.
His 64% completion percentage is what really has me fired up. We so rarely have had a QB much over 60% that 64 or more would be amazing and completely game changing. That'll keep us out of 3rd and longs and will convert so many more 3rd downs then we have been it's unreal. Hopefully we can save our All American punters leg and not wear him out this yr haha

From what I heard from my Michigan friends, he is a bit of a check down Charlie and does not take many chances down the field. His lack of big play ability with his arm and his legs is likely what lost him a close QB race at Michigan, but it suits him perfectly at Iowa. Conservative, no turnovers, keep the chains moving, get in great punting position. The Iowa way!

Completion rate of about 3 of every 4 passes thrown is damn salty. Think about it…
It's not like KF/BF calls for many deep shots anyway. Even with strong armed guys like Stanley and Petras those just aren't in the game plan anyway. Maybe 1 or two a game they try to setup. So yeah perfect fit. I thought I saw Cade go deep a few times on his highlights so I think he's got 40-50 yard downfield capability and that's more then enough. He's not as noodle armed as Rudock was. Timing and accuracy on the intermediate routes are way more important to what we do and I think he excels at that

I was about to say. I feel like I am missing something. Why were Michigan fans so eager for JJ McCarthy to replace McNamara even before McNamara got hurt? There must have been some issues that Michigan fans saw. Sounds like he likes to check down because can't or does not want to throw the deep ball? What are some of his other weaknesses?

Yeah I suppose the check down charlie thing has some merit. Also like every fan base they probably saw the recruiting stars next to JJs name and with his physical traits and everything folks were just dying to see what he could do. I get it. Turns out he's a stud. Did Harbaugh handle that all perfectly? No probably not. Most coaches don't so for all the things to roast Harbaugh for I won't too much for that. Trying to straddle that fence is hard to do. Once you make that move you can't put that toothpaste back and he knew Cade would be leaving after he did that. At least he had the stones to do it unlike BF who kept putting Petras out there over and over week after week for 3 seasons...

Yep, at Iowa, control the clock and LOS.They both go hand-in-hand. When Iowa is on the plus side for TOS and with its great defense, they usually come out with a win.

Yea, if he gets blocking and time, they are going to have some downhill opportunities. It ALL comes down to how the line has progressed and how it plays.

It is really funny the contrast of fan's impressions whether being a fan of the team the player is leaving vs the fan of the team the player is going to. It's LOL funny.
The fans of the team he is going to say he's so athletic, fast, smart and gets the ball out fast at an amazing % and the fans of the team he is leaving say how he's just a game manager and check down Charlie with little arm strength.
I think the player is usually somewhere in the middle. I find it just funny, though.
