BLACK AND GOLD BLOWOUT COVERAGE

It was a great night. I was struck by the depth of the men's team. I kept noticing people who will demand court time, but for each one, I was wondering how he will find it on this team. Court time will have to come as the result of hard work, talent, skill, and smarts. I think that it will be a definite coaching decision between Woodbury and Olesani. My biggest questin is, which player gets enough court time that he is no longer a freshman (Woodbury) or sophomore (Olesani) when the BIG roles around? Ingram and Clemmens didn't look like players who belong at the end of the bench. May isn't just the senior leader; he can play.

It wasn't a night that gave definitive answers, but my confidence got yet another boost.

Oh, by the way, in the shootout between Cedar Rapids stars, Jaime Printy won the three-point contest against Josh Oglesby by hitting 60% of her regular three-pointers and 80% of the money balls. Not many players anywhere could've beat her.

I posted earlier about Gessel, Clemmons and Ingram. I think Gessel will start. However, in the clips I saw, Clemmons hit 3 three's and Ingram had pretty much four straight drives straight to the bucket for 8 points and was very disruptive on defense. I can see him being the lock down defender on our opponents best guard. Now, the were obviously not going full speed last night so we have to put that in to perspective of course. But, the guard court is going to be exciting even though the are young. I am sure there will be some growing pains, but it will be fun to watch this year. I am very excited for the season to start. Hopefully I can make it up from Kansas City for a game or two.

Fran said Oglesby was the best shooter he has evar seen.

I have been skeptical of Ingram this summer, but am encouraged by what I saw and heard from fans who were there. He looks like he is back in shape, and is a very good athlete, altho a bit undersized maybe.

I have been insisting that Eric May is still a critical part of this team, and I think we can see he is going to have a big senior season,on the court and off....replacing Matt's leadership is important, and Eric is the MAN!

I hear conflicting reports on Ingram's size. ESPN says he's 6'3" 180lbs, while Hawkeyesports.com says he's 6'2" 211lbs.

Kind of a lot of room for details there.

Just a few things I saw:
Gesell has ups and is quicker than some people give him credit for.
Woodbury has more athleticism than he shows, but I think he and Gabe share about the same amount of minutes.
I really think having Marble play the point for two years has really improved his game.
Clemmons isn't that far behind Gesell.
Not sure what to think about Meyer but he clearly has the tools, just needs more experience I think.
Even though May won the dunk competition, Gabe clearly had better dunks. One thru the legs and one around the waist.
Dadiesel is tall.
The Fran driving the car was lame.
One last thing: the total amount of athleticism is so so much greater than the Lick days.

For those wanting to get a little better idea and couldn't make the scrimmage last night, you can find images from the blowout on my facebook. To help kick-start the season, I included shots from the women's, men's bball along with even a few of the Dance & Spirit Squads: www.facebook.com/iowasportspictures

so what about the hyperbole...OG3 would be the bestest player ever on those Lick teams! This team now would crush those previous teams into nothing! Yes! Talking Hawkeye b-ball ******* ******** ********!

Does anyone happen to have some video from the live scrimmage? Would love to see some.

I do.

I will post it later when I get some free time.

I missed some of the really good parts of the scrimmage while I was taking pics. I'm a one man show when I do coverage, so I shoot photos (Clem does an awesome job for the site, I just take some for my own usage), video, and try to comment on Twitter and here while the stuff is happening.

I also have vid of all the player intros and some of the stuff that went down, as well as more pics. Just haven't had time yet. Got back home this afternoon and hanging with the kiddos.

What he means is that the wife handed him the baby;Pax was watching a video; and she told him there was a Casey's pizza in the oven and she was outta there....

Pat was right around 210. He added some weight over the summer... more than he wanted and has been working some off.
