Binns in trouble?

Are you kidding me???? He ran a stop sign, that is real responsible. Drunk driving and responsible cannot be used in the same sentence let alone the same massive post....

I never claimed to be great at reading comprehension, but where in the article did it state he ran a stop sign?

"According to arrest records, Binns drove his 2003 Dodge Durango straight through a left turn lane. He was also pulled over due to an equipment violation."

I don't take driving through a left turn lane as running a stop sign/red light, or they would have stated it as such.

I think you are taking another posters misplaced words and taking them for gospel.

University Heights cops are some of the worst around. I would wager they saw a large African American male driving late at night, and thought hmmmm, I see an equipment violation there, let's go investigate. Then when it was a 20 yr old football player who had been drinking, they thought to themselves, jackpot.

The field meters are usually accurate to .01-.03. I have seen many from .09-.11 thrown out.
Does it seem a little odd they chose to report to the 3rd decimal place here? .101 was obviously chosen instead of .099 to make it sound worse. I don't know why else he would do that when the meters are not even that accurate. My guess is either the cop was trying to make a point to make it harder to appeal, or BB was being mouthy.

+1

I realize that he is a player and he is going to be a future star (I thought at the end of last year he dominated as much as anyone else on the D-line) and shouldn't be doing things like this. But . . .

I'm kind of repulsed of the holier than though attitude some of you guys are holding in regards to the players. He made a mistake and this kind of thing can hurt the team but he's also a 20 year old kid.

Many of the grown men here idolize these kids and think they are gods, they aren't, they are kids who are great athletes. While your hopes and dreams of a national title and the like are damaged by one of the starters getting into trouble like this, don't forget they are human. When I was in college I did a bunch of stupid things too.

Unless you walked the straight and narrow your entire life you really have no right to pass judgment on these guys for something simple like a "barely over the old legal limit" OWI. I'm not excusing his actions and hopefully he'll get a big enough punishment from the law and the coaching staff to wake other players up.

However, have any of you guys ever watched a movie about college? Did you go to college? Did you go to Iowa, a party school?

Again, I'm not saying what he did is excusable, but he is human and 20 years old so cut a little slack.

I think this is well said. I agree that he should be punished and pay for his mistake...and I am against drunk driving. But the people on here that want to beat a college kid up for making a mistake because their personal hopes and dreams of a good football season are damaged is dumb.

Driving barely over the legal limit is something that I don't do, but I see people my age (31) do all of the time. At least Binns has an opportunity to learn from this.

Ive done stupid things in my life too. But when i break the law, i dont expect be giving any slack. I guess i was raised differently. So because he is 20 and plays for Iowa, he should be given slack and we should just make excuses as to why he should not be punished?

I didn't say he should be let off the hook. Don't put words in my mouth. I'm sure that the judicial system and the coaching staff will do plenty to make sure he will regret his actions. My problem is with the people who point fingers and say things like, "How could he do that?".

I'm sure the temptation to go out and have a good time in college is pretty strong given the drinking culture and the high quantity of gorgeous young women in Iowa City.

I don't think he should be given slack at all, I was just saying he's human and making the point that people outside of internet saints do make mistakes.

I just hope he isn't kicked off the team or suspended for more than three like some morons here would hope for. I thought Binns put as much pressure on opposing defenses as anyone during the end of last year.

I agree. After reading that article, I thought to myself, are you kidding me? Since when is wearing a bracelet a crime, and why did it need to be reported, and why did they state his BAC as .101? I also thought to myself, they really pulled him over for an equipment violation and the left turning lane thing was some secondary excuse they mustered up.

Actually, when I read University Heights, I thought: that explains it all.

what a DB move. i hope he gets kicked off the team. sick of this.
Wow. You want our best player of our junior class kicked off the team for blowing .021 over the legal limit and not being smart enough to get out of it. I hope you getting a speeding ticket for going 2.1 mph over today.

You're completely missing the point of what he was trying to say.

And then gets fired from his job for it.

Oh my bad I will lose the running a stop sign comment and stick with drinking and driving and responsible cannot be used in the same sentence or massive post, is that better for you?

Exactly.
They gave me a public intox, making me spend the night in jail, when I chose to walk home from a party instead of drive.
They are also known to give speeding tickets on melrose for 26/27 in a 25, and as a cambus driver that drove that rode thousands of times I can vouch for that. Maybe Travis Mullen will drive through there today...

I had a friend who was an EMT ... after responding to many, many car crashes caused by drunk drivers he came up with an idea that would prevent repeat offenses and also be a strong deterrent to others.

His solution ... shoot them dead on site, Judge Dredd style.

If you are in the left turn lane at a stop light and go straight, your driving like an idiot and asking to get pulled over. He should have walked or got a cab home end of story.

So his solution would have been for the police to shoot Binns?

correct

he described some of the gruesome tragic things he's seen ... dead kids, dead Moms w/ screaming kids still strapped into the car, severed/mangled body parts ... stuff I really could have done without hearing about, but I could see his point of view

I might soften it a little by only killing repeat offenders

Sounds like a great idea for the high BAC cases. This could be the worst tier of the stepped system. I very much doubt that the type of accidents you are referring to happened with drivers like BB in town and with a ".101" BAC.

I have an idea, probably not an original idea but an idea nonetheless:

Put breathalyzers in every car produced. If it doesn't start, you take a cab or walk. Of course, places like University Heights wouldn' have any income if this happened but it would save a lot of people a lot of headaches and heartbreak.

If this is true, wouldn't want to be him when AC finds out. On a side note, we have at least three guys waiting to step into that spot that can more than hold their own. Might lose a little in pocket pressure, but might actually improve against the run.

I'm friends with AC on facebook and he was commenting on being drunk this week, granted it was his birthday, but still.....

Yep. No big deal... he only got in a car legally intoxicated and drove!

I hope you have a great day and everything goes your way.
