Biggest opening round upset in NCAA

That was a good defensive team but overall I didn't think they would do much in the tourament that year. The BiG was the worst it's ever been that season. Not a single BiG team made it to the sweet 16. Iowa benefitted from that down year quite a bit. Had they won, West Virginia was #6 and Texas the #2. Those athletic programs would give any team serious problems.

Agree! Iowa was not very athletic & was very slow. The other team had better athletes & was quicker.

I get what you are saying, but that team had a label slapped on it because they rolled out a bunch of white dudes. That team could really get after it on the defensive end. I thought a senior laden team that could play a half court game in the 50's or 60's could go far.

A friend of mine went to Iowa State when the loss to Hampton happened. The day after they lost, Jamaal Tinsley immediately dropped out of school, hired an agent who bought him an escalade, and just drove all over campus all day every day with his buddies bumping Nelly.

They were a senior laden team, but they also did A LOT of stupid things to let teams back in games

He's in good company! Lute & Coach K. also made it twice. Actually, I think Lute's loss to Toledo in '79 was worse than Alford's. However, Lute made up for it the next year!

Followed by the choke-away season a year later when we lost the Big 10 title, then lost to Wichita State in the ugliest of ways.

To wit:

--Game tied. Hawks have ball for final shot. Hawks miss final shot. Scramble for ball. Hawks called for foul. Hawks call time-out, except...Hawks do not HAVE any time-outs. So, with almost no time left, Coach Gene Smithson's kid hits two FTs plus two technical FTs to stun the Hawks. That same weekend, #1 DePaul went down (this is pre-64 team tourney), defending champ Louisville went down (on a 2/3 court shot from U.S Reed of Arkansas), highly-rated Kansas State (with Rolando Blackman) went down with almost no time left.

I was in the Bellagio sports book for that game. Got there early for front row seats. I had no idea how packed it had gotten until the roar when that shot fell. Everyone loves an upset. It was a complete heartbreaker. I was so pumped to get to watch them twice in Vegas but it didn't happen. At least I still had a pounding headache from the night before to deal with.

Anyone else remember Haleska almost had a buzzer beater after that shot? No one guarded him and had he had a wide open deep 3 go off the rim. If that shot falls, that game is one of the best memories of all time instead of one of the worst.

Sorry, guys and girls, but I just had to....This is even more depressing for me b/c Brunner being from Charles City (where I've been since '93)

This game is right up there with Toledo. People just love to hate Alford. How about the Hawks in '68. All the Hawks had to do to win the B1G outright is beat last-place Michigan State at home. Of course, Iowa lost.

Watch....Iowa will probably be the 5/12 upset victim this year. That would be a very Iowa thing to do.

Absolutely brilliant ! Fran knew that to avoid being upset in first round, he has to make his team lose to down to middle seed to give his team chance to make deep run in NCAA. Just brilliant!
