The United Center area is ever-improving and between the Loop and the UC is now resturants and gentrified condos and upscale homes. Since the Blackhawks won the Cup in 2010, it has really picked up steam as a party area. We walked around the area after a Bulls game recently....not scary.
Not sure what constitutes a ''midwestern'' city....no ethnic groups? Yes, Chicago is a city of immigrants, from Eastern Europe, Ireland,Mexico, ect....all Iowans had to come from somewhere also, unless they are native americans.
I think going back and forth between Indy and Chicago is the sweet spot. Indy is not as centrally located as Chicago, and does not have much outside of the games. Attendance has lagged down in Indy in recent years for a reason....Chicago has the most Big Ten alums by a mile,so attendance will always be strong there.
