Big Ten NFL Draft Pick totals last 10 years; Iowa prominent

off the top of my head Iowa DB(s) drafted:

Corners: Fletcher, Speivey, Prater,

Safeties: Pagel, Sanders, Cosidine, Sash, bernstine

Pagel doesn't count which two am I missing?

(sigh) I sure miss Considine. That guy was everywhere making plays. Seems like forever we had someone like that.

"Iowa was also in a tie for third with six first round picks"

Apparently it's not true that Iowa doesn't really get many higher draft picks.

Ok, guess I will be the first "idiot" who questions why the high number of draft picks hasn't translated into more success.

I used to think this way as well, but when you really think about it, college football is dominated by teams with playmakers at the skill positions. When you look at that list of draft picks, there are only a total of 4 in the skill position category. Obviously you still need good line play, but good line play without good skill position talent translates into a good, but not great, program. And in the last 10 years, Iowa has been a good, but not great, program.

In before a bunch of idiots hijack this thread with the "If Iowa has so many draft picks, why hasnt that translated to more wins on the field?"

That actually won't fly ;)

Here is the BTN List, and then out to the right and in parenthesis, I put the team's corresponding overall and conference record during that time frame. This will take into account the 2002-2011 seasons, which were the season's played in advance of the corresponding draft years used.

1. Ohio State 59 (105-24) (93-24 officially recognized)
2. Iowa 45 (85-42)
T-3. Nebraska 41 (82-48)
T-3. Wisconsin 41 (94-37)
5. Penn State 40 (had to forfeit too many years)
6. Michigan 39 (82-44)
7. Purdue 27 (64-61)
8. Illinois 26 (44-77)
9. Michigan State 26 (70-56)
10. Northwestern 12 (62-63)
T-11. Minnesota 11 (58-67)
T-11. Indiana 11 (37-82)

Wisconsin has done a great job on the field and in the draft. I'd say given their resources compared to Ohio State's, they are probably the team of the last decade in the Big Ten. Of course, Ohio State has won the most games but Wisconsin hasn't been under the spectre of major NCAA sanctions and they also don't have the recruiting base that Ohio State has, either. Iowa is in third in overall wins during that era, which is very much in line with their number of draft picks.

Ahh, the cold hard fact approach.

You should know that wont work with the pitchfork carriers around here after KF's head.

The Big Ten Network's website posted an item on Wednesday morning that listed the Big Ten's draft pick totals over the last decade.

Ohio State led the way with 59 picks overall and Iowa was a surprising second at 45.. Iowa was also in a tie for third with six first round picks, behind Ohio State and Penn State.

Iowa and Wisconsin tied with five tight ends drafted.

Here are Iowa's picks by position:

OL: 13
DB: 9
DL: 8
LB: 5
TE: 5
RB: 2
WR: 1
QB: 1
K: 1

There is a lot more interesting data at that link

Its not a surprise that Iowa was second. Its been said over and over again. Iowa had the third most players drafted in the country for a 3 year stretch.

Hence the opinion that KF has done a terrible job since 04. Consistently losing to teams that were totally inferior talent wise.

His one saving season that earned him his absurd contract he had to completely luck out to beat UNI and Indiana. If not for that you're looking at 8 straight underachieving seasons.

I was talking more nationally than just in conference. Over the last few years Iowa has had about as many guys drafted as Alabama or USC, however, most of their players were drafted in the first couple rounds as opposed to the later rounds.

Does Iowa play those teams?

Where do Northwester, Indiana and Minnesota fall?

By this logic, the Hawks were snake bitten by bad luck because of 5 turnovers against NU and a fullback going the wrong way against MSU in 2008 from going 10-2.

Also last year, ISU, CMU, Purdue, Indiana and Nebraska had to completely luck out to beat the Hawks last year. If not for that, we are looking at a 9-3 season last year.

Right?

Actually it will fly Jon. That decade look back changes dramatically as 2002, 2003, 2004 fall off the counter. I'm not discrediting KF's accomplishments in those years, as they were a great run and thankfully KF built those teams, but they are getting very distant in the rear view mirror.

I will agree that allot of those losses in 2008 were flukes that went against Iowa. But part of that was Stanzi not getting any playing time the previous season, where just like last year the starter should have been pulled in blowouts to get the next guy at least acclimated to what a game is like.

Im not saying KF shouldn't be given credit for 09, just like he should be given credit for all the terrible losses the last 3 years. He should also be given credit for beating allot of good teams at the same time.

But, 7 out of the last 8 years he has taken more talented teams and lost games to lesser talented teams. That is a consistent pattern. The one year where it didn't happen, it was only due to two fluke plays.

Last years losses to CMU, ISU ect are no different than all of the other times it has happened.

Yeah. Because that's such a ridiculous question to ask. Is this Mary? Or just "a" mary...

Remind me not to buy stock in your company. "NO...we're not making our numbers, and sales are on the decline. But look how many of our guys have gone on to better jobs!"

Who's the idiot?

In 2009 Iowa beat Indiana by 18 points. I'd hardly call that a fluke. I understand the pick six changed the game, but Stanzi threw for like 300 yards in the 4th quarter.
