Big Ten Hoops for 2013-2014: Who Returns, Where Iowa Fits

I don't think it is personal when someone picks against Wisconsin. Not at all. But the thing that people fail to realize time and time and time again is that certain coaches succeed no matter the personnel. Bo Ryan is one of those coaches and it's been proven year after year after year.

I also don't respect lazy analysis. Because if anyone looks at the Wisconsin roster and compare it to prior years they would notice that Bo ALWAYS has turnover in his roster because he is a developmental coach. He's not reliant on one special recruiting class that was responsible for his success. There's been many student athletes that have matriculated under Bo and the results are always at the Top third of the league. You can go back EVERY year and there was some important player or group of players that Bo lost to graduation/injury/NBA and Bo always replaced them because there was a guy he was developing behind them. To overlook that after 12 years of it happening is lazy.

Who are the next guys to come in and replace Evans, Berggren and Bruesewitz? That'd be Kaminsky, Anderson, Brown, Hayes, Dekker and Dukan. There's 6 frontline guys right there. Just because you haven't heard of them or they haven't played much doesn't mean there isn't talent. Berggren got spot minutes behind Leuer and Nankivil. When it was his turn Bo had him developed and he was ready to play. The same will happen with several of those 6 guys. It's like the New England Patriots. Everyone panics whenever a guy like Welker, Moss, Bruschi, Harrison, Vrabel, etc leave or get left out in free agency. Yet every year Bill Belicek is close to the top of the standings. Certain coaches know how to develop, eye talent and then coach them up. Bo is one of them.

Just because previous groups have done it doesn't mean the group will...as you said they are unproven. I would pick them outside the top 4 but I expect bo to possible have his team do better than that.

Do you think osu will be as good after losing a player like thomas? I don't but matta has a track record for finding guys to pick up the pieces.

The difference is that iowa right now is on an upswing to challenge what others are doing and will make it harder for teams like wisky to keep doing what they have. Playing iowa is no longer like playing nebby.

For all of the developing that bo does what is his record in the ncaa tourney? I honestly don't know. Because part of what makes a great coach great is winning in the tourney. That is why izzo is so great.

Hell yes Matta has a history of doing it after losing a player. Didn't he just lose Sullinger last year? Evan Turner the previous year? Matta always reloads, that's why he goes back and forth with Bo for highest winning % in BIG history.

I'm not sure that my Huskers will be as bad as you think, Jon. Besides Ubel and the Brazillian Steakhouse, I don't know that we lose too much. At the very least, this team will have more than 7 scholarship players, and we have a pretty decent class coming in (for NU basketball, at least). 2013/14 may be ugly, but I can't imagine that we will be a worse team than this year. I don't think that this is a top half of the conference team, but I would be surprised if either PSU or NW finished higher.

Minnesota thought they were on the upswing too when they hired Tubby Smith.

Illinois thought they were on the upswing too when Bruce Weber was there.

Iowa thought they were on the upswing when they hired Steve Alford.

Michigan thought they were on the upswing when they hired Tommy Amaker.

All of those coaches were fired during the Bo Ryan tenure.

Be careful about making predictions when nothing has been proven. Iowa has never been in the NCAA tournament under Fran and now I'm supposed to think that suddenly a coach that has won for over a decade is going to get left behind?

Puh--lease.

I agree with what you say. Miles seems like a good coach.

Most of those coaches had a much more bare cupboard than bo had to start with. I never believed in alford. You make it seem like no one can ever surpass bo...but again I ask what has bo's record been in the ncaa tourney? Good coaches win in the regular season...great coaches win in the post season...such as izzo or even matta...better ncaa records than bo (guessing and probably correct).

Bo has made 5 sweet 16's in 12 years. 10-2 in opening round games.

Bo's first year was a completely bare cupboard. They lost the ENTIRE starting 5. Kirk Penney was basically a set shooter going into his Junior year or Josh Oglesby if you will.

There were only 7 scholarship players at Bo's disposal his first season. They were picked 9-11th in an 11 team league in Bo's first season.

Do some freaking research or at least know what you're talking about.

badger, you keep comparing the past like it has anything to do with the future. Yes Bo Ryan is a good coach, we have told you that over and over but the rest of the Big Ten is catching up to Wisconsin. Wisconsin has had a lot of success during some of the worst periods the league has ever seen. Better coaches and better players are coming into this league and it will not be as easy for Ryan to keep Wisconsin in the top half of the conference, you guys got some breaks this year congrats. But even you cannot expect to keep getting those breaks year over year, at some point it is going to level out.

Next season there are a glut of teams in the middle of the Big Ten that could finish anywhere from 2nd to 7th and all be in the NCAA tournament. Personally I do not think Wisconsin will slip all the way down to 7th per Jons prediction but it is within the realm of possibilities and you are going to see many more people besides Jon making those predictions about Wisconsin. IMO any prediction after Michigan State is a crap shoot.

I posted in another thread all of those sites that predicted the Vadgers below 4th place for this year. I really wish that Activebadger would go and bother those people instead of us. I mean I thought ISU fan was insecure, but activeVADGE takes the cake......HOW DARE YOU THINK WISCONSIN IS MORTAL!!!

Yeah right. All I heard was Wisconsin got lucky against Michigan with a half court shot and would lose to them badly the next time. We beat them on a neutral court in Chicago.

Wisconsin went 4-0 against Indiana and Michigan. Are either of those teams going to be better next year? I doubt it.

Wisconsin backed up their regular season league play with making the title game in the BTT.

Wisconsin isn't going anywhere, in fact I think they're getting better. 2013 is Bo's best recruiting class, add that to Sam Dekker and sky is the limit. He's never had athletes like what is coming.

This is so weird... nearly every time I watched Wisconsin they looked horribad.

Yet in the end they still had a good record.

Surreal
