Big Men in Portal

Seriously, Fry, your use of the word nostalgia is as tired as you. That is not what this is about for me. I don't need to see giant shoulder pads, t-formations, and Hayden Fry on the sideline yelling at his tight ends to stand up straighter. Change can be great.

But, for the 20th time in this string alone, my justification for not liking NIL is that it creates a less competitive environment where success is bought and not earned. Without some form of competitive balance and rules in place, college football starts to look more like professional wrestling. Hyperbolic? Sure.

If I am the conferences/schools/NCAA, my justification for telling these kids that their earnings have to have some level of oversight and control is simple. This is our product. You are a guest here. If you don't like it, go play football someplace else. It has been the same justification for 100 years. Yes, college football is a billions dollar industry. Who built that industry? The member universities after decades of development and investment. Now that it is such a financial jaugurnaut, I am fine with the athletes getting a piece of the pie. But, let's not fool ourselves as to who made the pie.
Lol. The member universities??? Gimme a break, man. The reason they became the empire they are is because people want to watch the elite athletes. With no athletes there is no pie.

And let’s not pretend that you’d be peachy keen with all the elite D-1 football players starting their own pay league. The product left would be a watered down farce that no one would want to watch including you. It’d be just like women’s sports and no one pays any attention to that anemic stuff.

Entitlement, you say? Quite the contrary. Old timey folks like yourself longing for the good old days are the ones who feel entitlement. You feel that you’re entitled to watch people play a game for you like a bunch of court jesters under your rules and for however much money you think they should be paid. Not what they’re actually worth.

And you keep dodging my question. Either answer it or admit you’re a hypocrite. One of the two…

How is this different than telling an elite computer programmer who is also a college student that he or she should have a limit or restrictions put on the amount of money they can make in that field while in school? Especially when those restrictions and limits would be put in place by a bunch of folks like yourself with no connection whatsoever to the students in question...

How bout this, Kris impresses at the combine and still comes back. Imagine the hype and the marketability opportunity he will have at Iowa for another year. He also can develop through the same staff he trusts and helped his brother become a soon to be millionaire. It's set up for next season to be all about him and I think he's ready for that and his earning potential, baring injury or something drastic, will be greatly increased by being in the pre-season all whatever teams coming into the year. He'll actually have a head start on where Keegan started if that seems possible. I feel like he'll be in an Iowa uniform next season.

Kenyon said this morning that he's not doing the combine deal but still being evaluated. Whatever that means. Feels like he'll be back but heck if I know

I will make a wild prediction. So far, the Iowa Athletic Department is under fire because we do not have a NIL program. This will continue until we have a plan, which we will, followed by posts highly critical of the plan. Yawn.

What was this thread originally about again? Oh yeah...............

........joining a team mate that earlier committed to ISU. Fran might be getting his swings in but he's not connecting on a big need (unless you believe Ogundele is the answer) and the pickings are getting slim.

Disappointed Iowa couldn't land him he would have been a good fit defensively. Even more disappointed he ended up a Cyclone. On paper TJ Otzelberger is putting together a pretty good squad next year. Add AJ Green as expected and they might be really good.

As for the Hawks, there is Tre Mitchell and 2 or 3 other guys to go after. Hopefully, Kris comes back and Fran can grab one of those 3 or 4.

Tre Mitchell committed to West Virginia today. I don't know who the others might be that we're "in on" and don't think they likely move the needle that much at this stage of the harvest.

Took a quick look at the big men still left in the portal that aren't likely to stay in the NBA draft and haven't committed to anybody. The list goes as follows:

Matthew Mayer
Efe Abogidi
Mouhamed Gueye
Qudus Wahab

Guys who are undersized, but are a better fit than Rebracca at the 5 spot:

Emmanuel Akot
KC Ndefo

I don't follow this stuff that close, so I have no idea who Fran is pursuing. If Kris comes back I don't think he wants to play the 5 spot. He will if he has too, but I think Kris and his dad would rather he be at the 3 or the 4 spot the majority of the time.

That Kentucky kid Keion Brooks is in the portal. He's a guy we went after initially out of HS and we are on his short list. I'm not sure he's the 5 star stud everyone expected him to be but he's still a 6'8ish 220 lb athletic talent that can get 10/7 most of the time. Be nice depth for the front line. And if we can't seem to get a 5 man why not?

I'm not too sure we'll get him if only because who's he going to play over? PM? Murray? I assume Rebraca will start at the 5 so for a 5 star kid to leave UK to come off the bench somewhere else seems like a long shot.

I saw his dad post that was fake news though, but not sure what was fake about it because he didn't elaborate.

Millennials.... Entitled to everything and anything without comprehending what was built before you ever walked into the room. Gimme gimme. More more more. Mine mine mine.

I don't follow you odd analogies and I have answered your question a half dozen ways that you apparently can't follow. In any event, if the University passed a rule that limited what programmers could make while a student, I wouldn't give two rips. If the kid doesn't like it, matriculate to another school.

Lots' of industries limit earnings of side hustle earnings. Many upper level executives have full time employee clauses that don't allow the exec to moonlight doing other things. The law prohibits competing with your employer while employed, and many states allow prohibitions even after you leave employment. The labor market is heavily regulated and there are many many rules in place for the protection of the worker and the employer. That is the balance. The athletes wanted to earn money. Great. Good for them. But don't get all sanctimonious when someone suggest that reasonable rules govern the process. That happens every day in every work place and industry in this country.

None of that rambling you just did answers—nor is relatable to—the question I asked. You can’t and won’t answer that question in definite way because to do so you’d expose yourself as a hypocrite.

You just deflect.

The bottom line is you’re fine with anyone else earning however much money they want, wherever they want, but college athletes you’re not because the landscape of your little hobby would change into something you don’t like. That’s hypocrisy by its very definition. College athletics doesn’t affect you financially or in any other material way whatsoever, but you still feel that you have a reason and a right to expect them to act in a way that suits you.

That’s ridiculous, you know it’s ridiculous, and rather than admit you’re a hypocrite you deflect and try to rationalize your point of view. And fail miserably at it, I might add.

Boomers (you, in case you’re dense)… Expecting every young person to be subversive to their antiquated ways of thinking and expecting those young people to go out and earn money for someone else because that someone else was there first—or hit the road.

The gimme gimme, more, more, more, is the exact same thing for you only you expect the athletes to do the work on your whim and not get the benefit from it.

Da, comrade…

There would be no more “what was built before you walked in the room” without the current crop of athletes. Or the next class or the next class…

Can't totally rule out that he is being pursued as insurance for a Murray departure although I'm sure we would take him either way probably. At least this candidate has visited us in the past.

Do you even read what is written before starting to blather on? Of course not, that would take care, precision, and hard work. It would also distract you from polishing your collection of participation trophies.

You asked about my position on your computer programmer hypothetical. I specifically answered and said I would be fine if Iowa restricted its programmers outside earnings. So how did I deflect exactly? Don't deflect my question on how I deflected.

I am not ducking anything and I am not a hypocrit. You and I share different view points. Just because you don't like my answer does not mean I did not answer. I believe that NIL should be regulated and yes, some form of financial cap should be in place just like nearly all other major pro sports. I also believe that it is ok for other professions to be regulated, and if there is a good reason, capped. For instance, if the NCAA or Congress wanted to cap college football coaches to 3 million a year, I am good with that. If Congress capped CEO's to a factor of what their line employees are paid, I would be fine with that too. I don't mind smart regulations.

Que some rant about how I am a communist/socialist or whatever. Keep in mind that we do not live in a completely free market society. Don't fool yourself. If that were the case we would not have minimum wage, social security, OSHA safety rules, meal breaks, union protections, overtime requirements, etc. The "market" could regulate all of those things, but instead, Congress decided to step in and attempt wise policy interventions. We can debate the wise, but the government involves itself in our private working lives in just about every way imaginable. NIL is not sacrosanct to me. It clearly is to you. Congrats on that.

Yeah well Brooks isn't on Murrays timeline to decide on what he wants to do. So I doubt Fran looks at it that way. My guess is since he's a pretty talented guy that even though we need a 5 that'd be impactful more so that Fran would be happy to have him. Depth isn't a bad thing at the 3/4 spots. Murray could probably even play some 2 with Perkins at the 1. Having 4 dudes out there 6'7 and taller would be an interesting lineup.
