If I'm right here's the next move for the Big 12. They have an 'ace' in the hole that in my mind answers the question of how they could get the dollars in total that they did for just 'Texas' and yet give 'Texas' it's own network rights if they so choose.
Follow this.... they need 2 teams to get back to 12 and re-establish a title game. They also need another team in the Northern foot print to offset the loss of Nebraska. A certain team remains out there but needs some autonomy especially in network rights that the Big 12 now provides. This team just canceled a series against Army. Texas is not going to allow another Texas based team to join and BYU, Air Force, etc. do not fit the bill by any means. BYU cannot play on Sundays no less. Any ideas ?
Yes the next move is to invite Notre Dame. This would be a perfect fit for both the Big 12 and Notre Dame. Notre Dame could certainly compete and win the North and they would be able to retain their own network rights. The Big Ten has been rumored to cut out ND from Big Ten scheduling if they do not join the conference. This would allow ND to play a manageable schedule and pick up key match ups against Texas and OKlahoma on a rotational basis. They still could schedule another marquee game or two out of conference.
Then the twelve(or 11th-whatever order) team is Arkansas from the SEC. They would happily move to the Big 12 given the new contract dollars and the SEC would not be disappointed to see them go. This would allow the SEC to grab another coveted team in their foot print.
Notre Dame would give them the strategic team they desperately need to replace Nebraska and Arkansas would be more than a serviceable replacement for Colorado. Notre Dame's risk is minimal if the Big 12 falls apart down the road which I think it will when Texas is ready to cut the cord on the underlings after they get their own network in play and it is profitable.
The Big 12 would come out a stronger conference than before.
Look for this move and I think ND will be receptive to this.
