Big 12's Next Move - Ace in the Hole

If I'm right here's the next move for the Big 12. They have an 'ace' in the hole that in my mind answers the question of how they could get the dollars in total that they did for just 'Texas' and yet give 'Texas' it's own network rights if they so choose.

Follow this.... they need 2 teams to get back to 12 and re-establish a title game. They also need another team in the Northern foot print to offset the loss of Nebraska. A certain team remains out there but needs some autonomy especially in network rights that the Big 12 now provides. This team just canceled a series against Army. Texas is not going to allow another Texas based team to join and BYU, Air Force, etc. do not fit the bill by any means. BYU cannot play on Sundays no less. Any ideas ?

Yes the next move is to invite Notre Dame. This would be a perfect fit for both the Big 12 and Notre Dame. Notre Dame could certainly compete and win the North and they would be able to retain their own network rights. The Big Ten has been rumored to cut out ND from Big Ten scheduling if they do not join the conference. This would allow ND to play a manageable schedule and pick up key match ups against Texas and OKlahoma on a rotational basis. They still could schedule another marquee game or two out of conference.

Then the twelve(or 11th-whatever order) team is Arkansas from the SEC. They would happily move to the Big 12 given the new contract dollars and the SEC would not be disappointed to see them go. This would allow the SEC to grab another coveted team in their foot print.

Notre Dame would give them the strategic team they desperately need to replace Nebraska and Arkansas would be more than a serviceable replacement for Colorado. Notre Dame's risk is minimal if the Big 12 falls apart down the road which I think it will when Texas is ready to cut the cord on the underlings after they get their own network in play and it is profitable.

The Big 12 would come out a stronger conference than before.

Look for this move and I think ND will be receptive to this.

If Notre Dame goes to the Big 12, I'll eat a sh*t sandwich. Last I checked, they already answer to a higher power...and it ain't Texas.

Money and power can make strange bed-fellows.

If the Big Ten cuts the cord with ND watch out because this could happen. How much would ESPN or FOX love to have a Texas or Oklahoma vs. Notre Dame Big 12 title game? That would be must see TV.

I'm not saying this is a 100% lock but this makes major sense.

Notre Dame a "perfect fit" for the big 12...are you kidding.

If ND does not want to join the Big Ten there's no logic in ND joining the Big 12. There's less money. ND is geographically isolated. There's losing ND's independence. I can't see it happening.

Provide a link to one site that says the Big 10 is cutting ties with ND. And why would ND want to join the Big 12?

If it happens it won't be in the next few years. 5 years from now who knows what the hell will go down but ND to B12 would be low on my list.

It made more sense for ND to join the Big 10, and they aren't doing that. ND is not interested in ANY conference, let alone a watered down version of the Big 12. They are too stuck in the past.

No I'm not kidding. Notre Dame would have it's best chance of making the BCS playing in the North. Don't tell me that would not be a huge draw seeing a Texas/Oklahoma vs. Notre Dame title game in Jerry Jone's new stadium in Dallas.

If ND is going to join a conference on their terms this might be the conference.

Give me some reasons why not ?

Notre Dame already has the best BCS shot they could possibly have, which is that the entire system is rigged to give them an automatic berth if they finish in the top 8. You think they're giving that up to play home-and-homes with Baylor and K-State?

Because they are Notre Dame. They want nothing to do with joining a conference. If they wanted to, they'd be members of the Big Ten right now. They would make a helluva lot more money in the Big Ten compared to the Big 12.

Notre Dame's NBC contract will be coming to an end. It's been rumored to be a loser in terms of being a money making deal for NBC.

They do not want to join the Big Ten for two reasons in either order;

# 1 Too difficult to make the BCS
# 2 Have to come in as an equal partner thus give up certain rights

ND could join as a Big 12 North member and play a reasonable schedule that would give them a chance in many years to make it to the Big 12 title game. They would make at least 18-20 million plus retain their own network rights just like Texas.....

Bingo.

Wow. Delaney may jump off a building if that were to happen.

However, now that the expansion to "super conferences" is on hold for a while, ND will no longer feel the pressure to join any conference and will remain independent.

But, if the Big Ten were to add additional teams from the Big East and cause instability in that conference, I can see the validity of your argument. I had posted this in another thread regarding Texas and the new Big 12: "They would essentially be an independent football school with a rubber stamped conference affiliation. The best of both worlds."

Exactly the type of situation Notre Dame would want if they HAD to join a conference.

Sorry VAHawkFan... I missed your earlier post so I don't mean to trump your thoughts just agree.

If they join a conference in the immediate future, all else remaining equal this makes the most sense for ND.

I would bet money that the Big 12 via ESPN or FOX(who ever is behind the money) is going to put the full court press on them. They desperately need another marquee team.

I'm not saying ND will say yes but this will be tempting.

And I could sh*t a golden brick, too.

It ain't happening.

I am sorry but this is a reach, a creative one, but no way could they sell this to their alumni. Only three conferences are a "cultural" fit for ND- The Big East, The Big Ten, and the ACC. You really think that after all of the screaming their alumni have done about even considering a conference that they would slum with the likes of K-state and Texas Tech?

Agree with your sentiment to a degree but what if you tell your alumni...

How would you like to play in the conference title game in the biggest football stadium in this country 3 of every 4 years against the king of college football, Texas or another marquee program Oklahoma. If we win this game our chances of going to the national title game are extremely favorable and if not we are going to one heck of a bowl game regardless.

Now do you mind going down and hammering KSU, Baylor and Texas Tech in the meantime ?
