Big 10 Announcement Today--Looking to Expand to 12 Teams

For what it's worth, Rittenberg mentions this in his ESPN Blog today as well. Sounds like this is gaining momentum. It may not happen soon but it appears the ball is rolling.

I agree ND is unlikely.
I don't see a team out of the Big 12 coming over (even though I think the North teams should consider leaving)
Pitt would be the best 'get' I believe. Solid football and decent Bball. I don't know much about their wrestling but know the Pennsylvania has lots of talent.
Syracuse I think has some decent potential in footbal and very good in basketball.
Rutgers or Cinnci I don't think would bring much into the conference (except a new state with Rutgers)

I think all they will say today is, "Yes, we're looking" or "No, we're not." I highly doubt the Big 10 will name drop any schools at this point.

I think Pitt makes by far the most sense. Syracuse would be a great addition in b-ball, but I doubt they would want to leave the big east. I don't like Rutgers, they are too far east and Cincinatti doesn't stick out as a great addition. I just think with the overall package athletically (not sure on academics), Pitt fits the bill.

I got it, let's add ND and 4 city schools Cincinnati, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Syracuse

That gets us to 16 ... split into two 8-team divisions ... play a round-robin in your division and 1 or 2 teams from the other

Rutgers is the pick. Academics and TV market far exceed all the other possible choices.

If a Big 12 team were to join the Big Ten, I would rather it be Nebraska.
Only ND and Pitt seem to make sense to me. For some reason that I cannot explain Pitt seems the most likely.
People clamor that Rutgers will increase the media market. Tri-state natives watch the NFL not college.

"Penn State has more fans in Pittsburgh than Pitt does"-Kirk Ferentz He ought to know as he gre up in Pittsburgh and coaced at Pitt.

There isn't a stadium in NJ/NY that wouldn't be a full house for a Rutgers game with Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State.

Would picking up Rutgers help or hurt our ability to recruit in NJ?

Also, I dont know why Notre Dame wouldnt join with all the reasons Jon gave us yesterday in his deleted article. Their revenue doesnt appear to really be in danger of dropping if they join due to the Big 10's TV agreements (ABC/ESPN/Big10Network). Our basketball is getting strong again. Their bowl tie-ins are way better with the Big 10 than they are with the Big East. Plus I think recruits might like the idea of winning a conference championship, versus playing random teams each year with the only goal the extremely difficult task of winning the national title.

Well, Pitt's probably not the best bet then.

Rutgers...
Where in NY would they play?

Rutgers has a capacity of 52,454 which would make it the third smallest stadium in the Big Ten just ahead of Memorial Stadium and Ryan Field.
291,254 was Rutgers attendance for 2009, Rutgers' alumni and students who attended football games have commented that the school embellished those numbers.

What about Rutgers creates 'excitement' for the fans of Big Ten teams? Would fans want to see their team beat the oldest football program?
Rutgers peaked a few years ago, it has since returned to normal.

Just because a gargantuan media market sits across the Hudson doesn't mean that media market will be interested in the presented good, namely Big Ten football. When I lived in Brooklyn I travelled to a cop bar in Carroll Gardens to watch college football. Although the bar had nearly every game available, every Saturday I sat alone or with a friend. On Sunday the place was packed, SRO.

I would like to see West Virgina. I think this school is the way to go, they are very good at football and pretty darn good at bball. They are on the east coast, and it will add depth to the conference!

I wouldn't mind seeing someone from out west come into the conference. What about a MWC school, or possibly a boise state? Wouldn't that be crazy, if they are getting sick of being snubbed, they join the big ten and get introduced into BCS football!

Syracuse has more fans in NYC than Rutgers does.

Rutgers is a commuter school.

Pitt is a market already served by Penn State.

Syracuse or Mizzou is the pick... Cuse is followed pretty closely in NYC as it is the only major NY school.

Three questions:
1. Is this a good thing for Iowa?
2. If they add a team, will they split the conference into divisions B12 style?
3. Will we still be called the Big Ten?
