Big 10 Announcement Today--Looking to Expand to 12 Teams

It doesn't say who they're going after or what qualifications they're wanting to see, so let the speculation begin!

what does this mean ... I see it on cars, but never understood if you are a fan of native Iowa, like plants/animals/etc., or if you are a native Iowan, or something else?

If it happens, would they be in the Big 10 for next season?

Umm, no.

This announcement is merely to say that they'll spend 12-18 months on whether to CONSIDER adding a 12th team. Then they'll have to talk to schools, etc.

As was pointed out elsewhere, the current BCS contract ends on 2015. So when you look at the multi-year process it took to add PSU to the Big Ten, it seems reasonable to think that a 12th school wouldn't become a full member until around 2015 as well.

I like the idea of a midwest team ala Notre Dame or Missouri but some have said they don't have the research credentials to meet the academic profile. If we have to go east how do the candidate schools stack up academically- Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College? Of these three I would imagine B.C. would be the least likely to move as they just left the Big East for the ACC but stranger things have happened and if the Big Ten pulls the trigger here I think it will make for college wide realignment.

For what it's worth, Rittenberg mentions this in his ESPN Blog today as well. Sounds like this is gaining momentum. It may not happen soon but it appears the ball is rolling.

There is no momentum from the ones that matter and/or can make it happen, the presidents.

My bet is this is much ado about nothing.
