BF

I don't know if it is the play calling as much as it is the overall schemes. I remember Good old Woody Hayes would recruit great wide receivers and then run a Jr High passing offense. Didn"t matter what the plays were because he didn't know how to put a passing offense together
Of Course BF is no Woody Hayes

I'm probably in the minority here but I like Brian in the offensive coordinator position and my reasons for that are quite simple. I don't think there is another offensive coordinator alive who Kirk would hire and actually listen too. Ever since Brian has been the coordinator I've witnessed this offense get more aggressive, that last touchdown against Kent State would not have happened under any other coordinator as KF wants to sit on the ball. Brian might be the only person in the country who will stand up to dad on play calling and/or offensive theory in general because he knows damn well that dad won't fire him. Do I think Brian is in his position because of his dad, absolutely, but I don't see that as a bad thing.
Yup.

Certainly has it's pluses and minuses...

But yeah the GD years were terrible with a smidgeon of blame being Davis even if he wanted to open up the playbook KF probably wouldn't let him. Brian has had us doing a little more different things the last few yrs.

Which leads into why I'm sorta worried that the reason why we aren't pushing the ball downfield more isn't due to just the game plan so much as why they are doing it that way. I don't think coaches have a ton of confidence in either Petras, the receivers, the Oline giving him time or a combination of all of the above.

Our receivers have some paltry numbers to say the least. Tracy is avging like 7 yards per catch on what few he's had. I have little confidence that we can maintain this and keep beating good teams as we get going. Teams will adjust how they defend us and make it tougher to do what we want. That's how it goes....

Agreed. trj said it above too about being "open minded" and "willing to try things" over the last 5 years. Is that a product of the relationship between KF and his son and maybe his son get more leeway? Is it a shifting in a college football? Is it a shifting in some of their recruitment that brings in kids who are able to do those things, as we know Kirk coaches to his capabilities.

Also, can we give him credit for having the single most consistent and effective arsenal of QB sneak plays in NCAAF history?

I say that....only slightly in jest.

BF = KO > GD

That said, think we all wish that BF's coaching could lead to better success in offensive output. If he was 0.75 the coach that Parker was on the defense we would be a much better team year in and year out. I do wish Brian would figure out a few more ways to get his guys to better success and in the end zone more often.

There are too many unhappy pricks in this world. We are undefeated and ranked 5th in the country. Can't we hold hands and sign kum bi ya for a week or so?

Hating Iowa's OC has been consistent sport for the entirety of the KF era. Its not the OC, its the HC. The OC is doing exactly what his Dad wants.
Nuff said dos=2 times.Time to "enjoy" helpful Win.

Iowa's. Receivers. Aren't. Good.

They:

Drop Balls.
Break on routes late.
Are undersized.

There's a big difference throwing to Charlie Jones and Sam LaPorta vs. Brandon Smith and Noah Fant.

Smith and Fant had burners, but they were also huge and could jump out of the gym. Run Fant on the seam and Smith up the outside, what do you do? Stick the free safety on the guy 4 inches taller than him and a quarter second faster? And even when Smith is smothered, if you throw it high enough they guy could go get it. You could throw them both open, and they had the ability to be physical and go get it.

Iowa doesn't have that guy. Every single year, Iowa should be combing jucos and the transfer portal for big physical receivers, since they rarely seem to be able to recruit them. ISU gets the Hakeem Butlerses and Allen Lazards and Chade Danielsses around here. Mostly because they do the plays like the jump balls that those guys thrive on.

As long as Kirk is coaching, you are going to see checkdown Charlie at QB. Because Iowa wins with defense.

Over the last five full seasons, Iowa has averaged 9.4 wins per year. Average winning percentage since 2015 is .716. That's getting it done, here.

I'm not going to say that Iowa had great receivers but I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary with dropped passes. The only pass that was dropped that stood out to me was the one Tracy had that was initially ruled a catch and then incorrectly overturned. LaPorta has dropped a couple in previous games but overall I think he's been really good. There is never not going to be some dropped passes, it's gonna happen to even the best receivers.

I do agree that it would be nice to see Iowa go after more bigger receivers and I think the recent recruiting has been trending in that direction. I can't wait to see Brody Brecht and Keagan Johnson get into the rotation at receiver, both have the size and that athleticism you are looking for. I think the problem has been Iowa produces NFL tightends not wide receivers.
