BF, if You Care about Iowa Football...

If BF cares about Iowa football and his own future, he needs to tender his resignation at the end of the season. There is no way he is going to learn how to be a good OC under his dad's inflexible coaching mentality, sadly the game has passed KF by. I have no explanation as to what happened in the OSU game but I can be almost certain it had nothing to do with KF - not unless he intentionally removed himself from the game planning altogether and let everyone else game plan. If that's the case, we have our answer as to what needs to happen but the chances of him stepping away are almost nil.

BF needs to understand that his reputation is being built at Iowa, and right now that reputation is quickly turning to garbage. Clearly, he needs to get his dad's attention and resigning may be the only way he can make his dad understand that his dogged (bone-headed) formula is no longer working. BF needs to realize that if he wants a future in the sport, he needs to learn how to coach on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage from someone who knows how to scheme, i.e. how to exploit the other team's tendencies while doing a better job of masking your own.

The team has lost confidence in its ability and more importantly, they do not seem to trust the coaching staff to provide any answers. The college game is driven by confidence and momentum, of which Iowa seems completely lacking. There certainly are answers to be found, but can they be found by Iowa's head coach? I wish I could say yes but that would only be wishful thinking on my part, there is really no evidence to support such a belief.

I really do want BF to succeed, but realistically, I think he needs to find a program where he can truly learn how the game is played in 2017 and beyond.

Honest question: how would BF resigning after one season be good for BF's future?

It might be good for Iowas future but a coach quitting after his first season as OC is Not a smart career move

I realize it's risky but if his dad has throttled him this year and causes him to lay another egg next season, who will be interested in him? He'll carry the nepotism label with him until he stands on his own two feet, and the sooner he places himself in that position, the better off he will be. In my opinion, if he had success in another program, he could actually come back to Iowa with more support than if he just wallows in his dad's wake until KF decides to hang it up.

Hell, do it now. He and kirk. Let KOK coach the kNU game and lets really see what kid of offensive mind KOK has. I'd bet we'd all be surprised.

People forget the Ferentz name is highly respected in the coaching community. If BF is a fail here he will have other opportunities in the NFL and college to work his way back to becoming a HC.

He needs a demotion. The offense is not better and has actually regressed since Ohio State. It’s never been good all year to be frank.

BF is learning on the job but he’s a slow learner. Yes execution has something to do with it but playcalling has been subpar as a whole all season.

Iowa has enough weapons to score points. Talent is there. Wadley, Butler, Daniels, Fant, and Easley are all quality players. They are being wasted in this garbage system.

Brian Ferentz isn’t going anywhere, especially not voluntarily.

True. But if he doesn’t want to move his family from place to place he might want have a serious conversation with his Dad after the bowl game.

Anybody that thinks BF is walking away from $625K is crazy. He's pretty much guaranteed that and more til 2026 when KF is gone. KF is the ONLY one that can fire him. They don't read this forum, they got more important things to do with their time and money. That kind of money buys a very very thick skin.

Dude, this o-line is hot garbage. Wadley and Fant are great players and Stanley is probably really good, too, but unless the o-line gets things figured out, this offense is going nowhere. I personally don't think Emmitt Smith or Troy Aikman were great football players, but their o-line made them look really good and got them insane career statistics and accomplishments.

Kirk doesn't read the forums but I bet Brian skims them. Brian will find out first hand what Davis and KOK already know. The OC is blamed for everything from bad play calling to boring uniforms. Being the coach's son won't shield him for that. The real question is can he suffer in silence like his predecessors.

There were plenty of full seats at the start of the game, which is what counts.

This is true. So many people making a big deal about 10K empty seats on a very cold and windy day. I was ready to leave late 3rd qtr because of the cold but I stayed until they missed the 2 pt conversion which should end the argument about why you dont go for 2 pts at that time.

Great question. He's got a very healthy ego.

Not sure where the OSU game offense has gone. One thing I’ve notice in the last two games is the lack of shotgun formation on 1st down. Versus OSU 1st down plays were run almost exclusively out of shotgun. Outcome: OSU didn’t know if it was a read option, designed pass play, screen, etc. We should run mostly shotgun plays when Wadley is in the game.

In the last two weeks the offensive philosophy has taken a draconian (Ferentzian) turn back to the 1st down I-formation, and run, run, pass, punt offense we’ve all grown accustomed to over the last 19 years. The only times this strategy should be employed is when facing clearly inferior opposition (rarely), goal line situations (rarely), and when trying to run out the clock with a large lead (rarely).

How it took the coaching staff 56 minutes to open the playbook this week is beyond comprehension. Let’s just blame it on lack of execution though since that seems to work around here.

Please do not type 2026 ever again. That is too depressing when you actually see it.
