Best Iowa dunker of all time?

Was that NW or a different game? May's sweet side-tomahawk is at 1:42 on the IA/NW highlight video at Hawkeye Sports - University of Iowa Official Athletic Site

It was a different game and I am completely blanking on which. I want to say it was in the wisky game but I could be completely off.

He had a bad angle and almost seemed to catch the alley-oop from the side of the backboard and still dunked it. I didn't think he would be able to reach it from the angle he was running.

I know he isn't #1 but can we get some Basabe love in here? I love when he pulls out that one handed reverse dunk.

May's dunk yesterday after the steal was awesome, and he deserved the chance to show off a bit since he hustled and made the steal. But for my money Basabe's reverse dunk along the baseline was in another category altogether.

Let's talk about best dunks in heavy traffic.

When I was playing HS ball, Michael Payne was my favorite. Had his number 42 (also James Worthy's # another favorite). Payne wasnt much of a dunker though. Marble didn't wear 23 for no reason, he was smooth and made it all look easy. Wright was amazing. He could do the windmill just like Dom Wilkins was making famous. Sir Jamalot was also the first I ever saw palm and slam 2 balls at once.
Ricky Davis would be my top pick though. Largest vertical leap I have ever seen. In a Primetime League game I once saw him take off just below the FT line and it was like he was on an escalator. He just kept going up, up as he glided closer to the basket. That was the best dunk I have ever seen and will never forget it.

1. Ricky Davis
2. Gerry Wright
3. Roy Marble
4. Doug Thomas
5. Greg "HammerTime" Helmers

lolwut.
if i mention troy skinner in the same breath as allen iverson does that make them similar?

yes,
gerry wright #1.
james "skywalker" winters not getting any love? he had some fierce ones!
and the best iowa dunker who never even made the team? jeff walker.

I guess Sports Illustrated didn't compare them...they weren't the only ones, sorry to ruffle your feathers on that one.

SIR Jamalot - the cartwheel dunks at George Raveling summer camp

Ray Thompson - first summer of PTL - he was the one mentioned as a possible next MJ.

I was just gonna say that. Gerry Wright's cartwheel dunk was AMAZING. I wish that I could find a video of it somewhere. Ray Thompson was only at Iowa a year or two but was in my opinion one of the most talented players to ever wear an Iowa jersey. That guy could do it all. I got to see him in person one time in one of the traveling deals down in Creston. The dunks that he was throwing down that day were very Jordan/Wilkens like.

I'm a relatively young, but the best Hawkeye dunker I ever saw was Thunder Doug. It pains me to never see the glory days of Hawkeye hoops in the '80's.

Doug Thomas was the best Hawkeye dunker I ever saw. May might be top 10, but nowhere near DT status. I do remember James Winters throwing down some impressive ones.

You guys talking about Ray or Rod Thompson?

Having been a highly esteemed member of the Jr. Hawkeye Club in the 80's, I had the opportunity to witness MULTIPLE cartwheel dunks in person: Gerry Wright hands down. Makes me sad to think so many of you never knew that era of Iowa Basketball.

Gerry Wright, "sir jamalot" and it's not even close. His left handed windmill dunks were an explosion above the rim! Links anyone?
