Roy Marble had a real good year as a freshman.
So our current freshman are considerably lower stats wise than some of our best ever frosh years. Was just curious. Even with that said, all have done a good job.
| RDM | AW | |
| PPG | 5.7 | 11.1 |
| RPG | 2.38 | 6.07 |
| APG | 1.3 | .89 |
| SPG | .68 | .89 |
| FG% | 37.9 | 27.9 |
| 3FG% | 26.8 | 27.9 |
| FT% | 53.0 | 69.9 |
In the modern era of Hawkeye basketball, the gold standard for a freshman year is probably Jess Settles. In his freshman year of 1993-1994, these were his stats:
PPG - 15.3
RPG - 7.5
APG - 2.3
SPG - 1.5
FG% - 56.5%
3FG% - 38.1%
FT% - 84.2%
First Hawkeye ever to record 400 points and 200 rebounds in a freshman year.
And Tyler Smith was on a good Iowa team...Marble, Horton, Armstrong and Bullard if memory serves me right.
Smith was on a bad Iowa team. It was 2006-2007 which was Alford's last year. Iowa was 17-14 overall and 9-7 in the Big 10.
And Tyler Smith was on a good Iowa team...Marble, Horton, Armstrong and Bullard if memory serves me right.
Keep in mind, though, that some of the best freshman stats-wise were also on some of the poorer performing teams. Jess Settles freshman year saw Iowa have a losing record that year. Ricky Davis' freshman year saw Iowa only make the NIT. Roy Marble's first year saw Iowa make the NCAA, but get bounced in the 1st round.
Unless a freshman is an "all-world" player, and they typically aren't at Iowa, then a good freshman season, stats-wise, usually means that the team isn't very good....
