Bench Mabin for Jackson

I did key on Bower. I was really hoping that he had improved. This is not personal, or nitpicky. Maybe, this is the effect of losing Coach Reed.

I was hoping to see Mends get some action. ESPECIALLY considering we were down an LBer, we were playing so called lowly Miami of Ohio, and the hype he had since he was considered the #1 WLB by the coaches all spring and summer. . But I do not recall Mends seeing one snap at LB. That is right isn't it, he did not play? I did not see him on special teams, but have to assume that he was.

Well executed back shoulder throws against man coverage are almost impossible to cover. Ask any NFL corner. I was surprised we played so much man. On one TD pass, they gave the QB way too much time and you can only chase a receiver around the endzone so long. The other TD pass was a blown coverage. It was a typical 'smash route' and either Mabin should have been 'sinking' a lot deeper in the flat or Snyder was late getting over the top. Couldn't tell what coverage they were in from the limited view on TV, but I don't think they were in man. Some of you love to exaggerate and place blame, sure he needs to get his head around faster, but sometimes plays are just well executed. No need to panick or get carried away. And I have no idea why Bowers needs to sit?

There were some great throws made that Mabin could not of played any better.

You are generally an ass, but if you actually begin to post well thought out observations, and abstain from flaming others for not know as much of the game. Well, I might be okay with you, assuming you can drop the god complex.

I'm burying my head in the sand and just believing the softness of Iowa defense today all around was a combination of first game rust and there leader Jewell being in the locker room.

I remember the worries after the N. Texas game last year, too. I would not be surprised if Parker was trying out all the new pieces, and that can make things look quite different.

He sure was getting picked on.. That WR and QB aren't bad though... Not so sure Jackson would have fared a whole lot better. The D overall sure left a lot to be desired out there. Besides the TOs they sure let them march up and down the field. Kudos to them in taking what was given to them but man I would have liked to see Iowa dominate alittle more than that.

I agree AND PP's D looked very average. This didn't look much different than the Rose Bowl. Couldn't stop the run the pass or anything else. Thank God for TO's otherwise this would've been another MAC nailbiter.

This Miami team is picked to be at or near the bottom of the MAC. If they can air it out against our second best corner, the B1G is going to be ugly.

That is incorrect. Big play by Illinois=King, Big play by Minny=King, Burnt of fake fumble by stanfor=King....I can list all the big plays Lomax gave up also, but hopefully you get the point that Mabin didn't give up 'most' of the big plays. He no doubt had his share, but they didn't even give up that many 'big plays' last year. You must be thinking of 2014....
So I guess Mabin should have been the Thorp winner cause King sucks? Yeah, it was 2014 and 2015. Go basck and watch the film game by game.

Bingo. Mabin struggled on a few plays but their QB was very accurate on about a half dozen back shoulder throws to their #1 WR who is 6'4". There were a # catches that Mabin had good coverage and was right there.

Look, I'm not saying Mabin didn't struggle a little. But with base defense, no stunts, no blitzing and very little QB pressure, it can be a tough go against a accurate QB and solid receiver. It looks even worse when the opponent doesn't even attempt to go to the other side.

Mabin will be getting thrown at a lot this year and their will be games he will struggle a bit. Rolling a safety to help, stopping the run, getting more QB pressure, and having Jewell back will all help.

Mabin isn't all world, but he's solid. He will be fine.

Fair point. However, we were picked to be about 4th in the B1G West last year. I have no idea if MiamI Ohio will be decent going forward, but they looked decent. Unless that QB just had a lights out game, he looked pretty good. Who knows.

Wow, I'm sorry you are too 'slow' to understand what I was talking about. I can almost guaranty you I've watched as much or more Iowa 'game film' than you, and I actually know what I'm looking at. I know their defensive scheme and all their coverages...I coach those schemes. Someone made the comment that EVERY BIG PLAY last year was given up by Mabin, and I simply pointed out the FACT where that is incorrect. How you JUMP to the inference that I said Mabin was better than King and should have been an award winner is beyond the realm of cognition. Where did I say Kings sucks, nutjob??? You don't think King ever got burnt? Oh, and by the way, King was pretty 'pedestrian' in 2014 (sophomore slump?) Go back and watch ALL the film, game by game, lol, whacko...And people wonder why I rip into some people. I give thoughtful, informed analysis of things, and people go off on me and assume I am insinuating something that has never been said simply because it conflicts with their uninformed, 'emotional', opinion about something. And most of the people posting are bitching about us winning a game 'big' because we didn't hold them to minus 50 yds. total offense and -40 points. Some of you are just seriously whack........

Name a 'big' game last year that Mabin gave up a 'big' play in? Stanford? No that would have been Lomax on the first play and King on the 'fake' fumble play. Michigan St.? Nope. Wisconsin? Nada! Nebraska?

Mabin gave up some plays in 2014 when he converted to CB in the summer before the year and had a lot to learn, but like I've said, IOWA DIDN'T GIVE UP A LOT OF BIG PLAYS 'PERIOD' LAST YEAR WHICH IS A BIG REASON THEY WENT 12-2, but besides the Illinois game where he gave up a lot of completions (but go look, the LONG TD pass in that game was against King) Mabin had a solid year in 2015. He is better in zone coverage than he is man (like Sherman in the NFL) but I think they put him in man a lot against Miami to work on his man coverage.

Iowa hardly showed much of their zone coverage at all, because I think they changed it a little and don't want to show it to ISU. Teams figured out something against their 1/4,1/4,1/2 half coverage last year (one of their 'fav' coverages) starting with Minny, but why give ISU game film of their 'change' and 'expose' it before they have to?

We were picked near the bottom of the Big 10 West last year. We really don't know yet if Miami is bad or not.

Billy Bahl seems to have the tools to be a good quarterback and Miami has some good offensive players. From what I read, Bahl did not do well under pressure his first year. Iowa didn't get much pressure on him. Miami's defense was pretty awful.

honestly hard for me to blame the defensive backs for the defensive issues that game.

They were getting a lot of running room and our pass rush was non existent for a majority of the snaps.

The touchdown Maybin gave up .. the quarterback had a huge pocket and forever to throw the ball.

I completely agree... We should overreact after one game.

I'll get the pitch forks and dust off the "Kurt don't wanna win" signs. BRB
