"Wisconsin has been known to redshirt McDonalds All Americans"

==========================================

Really? Just because it happened once with Brian Butch out of his personal request you are going to go there? What a Homer!

Not many true McDonalds AM's would smile about a redshirt. Thats not really what they are all about, i.e., playing four years, usually.

I will say right now that Gasser is the frosh gem who Wisconsin has unearthed in this class. Gasser is gonna be a 4 year starter for the badgers...and already is damn near as good as JaBo was last year. Brust will be very much a bit player. Gasser is a combo who can play the shooting guard position also. Taylor is only a junior,so next year it will be the same guard rotation, with a possibility of George Marshall, quick pg out of chicago as the addition. Rob Wilson will still be at the shooting guard also.
Bottom line....Brust is buried until he is a junior at least and even then he could be behind Marshall and Gasser....clearly, Brust was not a player worthy of discarding decades of gentlemen's agreement between Big Ten schools on signed LOI's.
Now, every signed player in the league is still fair game for other Big Ten schools to pursue until they enroll in Sept...thanks Wisky!

I didn't think he would start. I thought he would get a few minutes here and there. I think he will be a nice player for them down the road. He would have been a nice player for Iowa down the road. There is a large subset of people on this board hoping and and praying he will fail at Wisconsin...its pathetic.

And you are rooting for him to kick Iowa's butt in future matchups with Wisky?

But no, you will embrace him even more because at one time he was committed to Iowa with all his heart and soul, but now says that Wisky was the place he knew was for him the whole time.

And that minor detail of Brust being the first Big Ten athlete to ever be allowed to go on scholly at a Big Ten school after signing a LOI with another Big Ten school....that just warms the cockles of every Hawkeye fans heart. Time for Fran to start recruiting signed BB recruits of other Big Ten schools since Wisky has now destroyed the precedence.

JHHAWK, I couldn't agree with you more. I used to have a grudging admiration for Ryan. Now I despise him. It's just not right to raid another teams recruits, especially when they are down. Still can't believe he was allowed to do it. But having said that, I sincerely hope Coach McCaffery will be recruiting better players than Brust in the future. Maybe Bo did us a favor.

I don't really care one way or the other about Brust. I guess I find it curious that so many grown adults have such a hatred for an 18 year old kid they have never met.

McCabe seems to enjoy the minutes he is receiving... as do Marble and Basabe. I think it is a horrible attitude to say things like "thrown into the fire" as if that is a bad thing. Does that hold true for North Carolina? Are they constantly throwing freshman to the fire or is that different? QUOTE]

Wow, really, you just compared freshman at Iowa to UNC? Maybe if Iowa had players like, Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Vince Carter, Antwan Jamision, Tyler Hansbrough, etc... then there would be an argument.
Being "thrown into the fire" is far from an insult to the player, it is an insult to the state of the Program. Now, with Fran, it is going to change. I really think that a redshirt year would have benefited Marble and Basabe, but there is no way Iowa could redshirt either of them. The reason I would have welcomed a redshirt year for both is, they need to get Big Ten bodies, they have the skill, but need a year to work on their physiques. Brommer is another player that could have used a redshirt year, but that is just the way it is.
Maybe I am a little old school in thinking, but unless the freshman is an elite player they shouldn't start. When freshman are forced to play minutes (and expect to be some of the top contributors) because the Program is that bad, I don't like to see it.
As we move forward in Fran's coaching at Iowa, we will see less and less of starting freshman out of need, I would expect it to end this year, unless Iowa can get a player that deserves it because of what he has shown, not becasue he has to.

Either Wisconsin lied to Brust about the way he would be utilized, or Brust isn't as good as Wisconsin thought he was. I could give a hoot less about Ben Brust. You could call him player X from this point... nothing against him at all.
When Wisconsin crossed that line of cherry picking recruits within the conference... player X became involved. Now do I blame player X... no, and we released him unconditionally. Now... is it considered hatred if I point out that player X isn't doing well at Wisconsin and may never see much playing time and how it appears we may been given a favor?

Geesh? Why are you on a Hawkeye message board? Go to the Badgers site with your man crush on player X.

Actually, I hope you are wrong about this. The elite teams bring in freshman who start. You play your best players regardless of class. The elite players won't come to Iowa if they are told no matter how good they are, they will never start as freshman and we expect you to redshirt. This isn't football.

You are mistaking my response, if they deserve to play and/or start then so be it. Okay, if Marcus Paige were to go to Iowa, would I want Fran to not play him because he is a freshman or limit him because of his age....uh, no.
I am a coach, JV and my wife coaches the same sport (Volleyball) at the Vasity level. Maybe you will understand a little more after this. Once tryouts were over we came to the conclusion that there were two freshman and a sophomore that should be on Varsity. The two freshman played in every game and were the setter and libero, if you don't know, those are two of if not the most important positions on the team. They earned those positions and played to the level we saw them as.
Our message to each 8th grade class is, work hard and see what happens, there is always a chance for a freshman to be on Varsity and have an impact.
So I am old school, but don't think that I ever want to see Fran handcuff a kid because I wouldn't. That is not a good message to send.
