Ben Brust...we hardly knew ye

While I am not saying Ben won't go to Wisconsin... NW had an appeal in for the waiver, as well.

That puts Ben's list at Wisconsin, Iowa, Northwestern, BC, and Cal.... for the most part.

There isn't any closure as far as where Ben is going, so the "saga" isn't over quite yet. The good news out of this is if Ben does end up choosing Iowa (no matter how unlikely), it will be because he wanted to play for Iowa not because he was forced to. I'd rather have it that way.

Again, I'm not saying he's not going to Wisconsin... but all we have right now is that the schools trying to land Brust (NW and Wisconsin) made appeals to the waiver and the waivers have now been granted. Ben is now free to sign with any of the Big Ten schools he wants to sign with.

Whatever happens, happens.

Brust also made an appeal to the Big10 which was denied. If this is truly about the player, why was Brust's appeal turned down and Wisconsin's was approved? Makes no sense to me.

I'm just guessing here shomehawk, but it's probably because it's easier to deal with 11 universities from here on out than it would be to try to field appeals from every player that wanted out so they could transfer within the conference...in other words, if they granted the appeal to Brust, how many other kids would try to get out of their commitments based on him winning his? The conference can bury their heads and say it wasn't because of the player, it was handled between the conference and its member institutions.

Brust filed a waiver to clear him to play on scholarship at another Big Ten school. Iowa agreed to the allow the waiver, however the Big Ten denied the waiver.

Then schools such as Northwestern and Wisconsin filed appeals on the denied waiver. The appeal was granted, thus reversing the waiver denial.. basically making the waiver good.

Hmm, I just thought of something. With all the B10 expansion talk, let's say this happened after the expansion to 16 teams. Will this rule still apply then? Having 10 teams "off the table" is easier than having 15. Would we as Iowa fans have a problem with Ben getting permission to join Rutgers?

I agree with an earlier post that said it was more about principle than anything, but I imagine there are a lot of policy changes on the horizon.
