Ben Brust is the Lake County Player of the Year (article)

He chose Iowa in July and has been proudly donning Iowa apparel almost every day since. "It's pretty much all I ever wear," Brust laughed.
Brust says it doesn't concern him in the least that the Hawkeyes have had a rough season (10-19) and currently sit in ninth place (4-12) in the Big Ten standings.
"I've seen strides all year," Brust said of Iowa. "They've been improving all year. They have one senior and one junior playing. The rest are freshmen and sophomores. As we keep developing, I don't see why we can't win Big Ten titles and compete with the top teams."
Brust is more than ready for that challenge. And sooner rather than later.
"A big reason I chose to come to Iowa is because I feel like I have a good opportunity to step in right away and help the team. I'll bring a lot of energy and I'll be a threat to score and they need that," Brust said. "Hopefully, I'll get that chance next year. I'm getting real anxious for it."

Here's the All-Area team:
Daily Herald's Basketball Focus 2009 | Lake County All-Area boys team

Ben Brust Mundelein

The Iowa-bound Brust has been nothing short of spectacular all season. Often facing double teams, he was still nearly impossible to stop, averaging an area-best 24.6 points per game. He poured in a career-high 50 points twice this season, scored more than 40 points four times and more than 30 points five times. A versatile player who can score from just about anywhere, his specialty still remains the three-pointer. He hit 83 of those. "He just loves basketball. He's a gym rat," Knar said of Brust, the honorary captain of the Daily Herald's Lake County all-area team. "But for as good as he is and for as much as he's done, he's an amazingly regular guy. He is by far one of the most down-to-earth kids you'll ever meet and I think one of the things that impresses me most about him is that he's handled everything that has come his way with such grace."

Really looking forward to watching this kid.

I would be too but I have a feeling his aggressiveness for the game will be toned down with Lickliter's system. I say this because May's athleticism and agressiveness were really showcased in HS (I saw him play 5 games) but I feel like at Iowa he is limited. It's frustrating because he looked more explosive (shown flashes) at Dubuque Wahlert than he does at Iowa.

Brandon Paul, 2009 Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois, now playing for the Illini.

The Daily Herald readership is random, the towns that are on the lake or close too it aren't part of the Herald, they are part of the Lake County News Sun, which is by the Suntimes.

I feel that this is well deserved by Ben, he is something that as you can tell from the article puts the team above his own ambitions and goals. He will be a perfect fit for us next year.

From reading that All-Area list it looks like Ben was up against one of his own teammates - the coach's son, who was a freshman? That's sort of ironic. It looks like that kid chucked up a lot of shots too.

Thanks for the help, HBB.

This junk that some of you guys come up with drives me CRAZY! Lick doesn't want to slow the game up, the offense wants to get a good open shot and if that is in transition, WONDERFUL, however when you don't have the horses to get that done it will not happen. There is no way that Lick ever tells Ben that he cannot shoot a 3 in transition, to someone like him, that's almost as good as a layup.

I truly believe that a lot of skeptics will see a difference pace/team next year, bearing the team sticks together in the off season and with the incoming recruits and Archie.
