Below average OC until Kirk retires?

If we could get the NCAA to reinstate the fair catch kick, would we even need an offensive coordinator? Stevens is only a sophomore.

Just recruit like two full defenses that can switch out every other series, a punter from Australia, and some Tim Dwight/DeJean types that could play both ways (either offense/defense or special teams and some kind of barebones special trickery offense that could run out of the wildcat or something if they somehow get the ball inside the 25....just in case they might break one for a TD. If not, settle for the 3. Woods could handle that. Otherwise, it's just punting and free kicks.

Yeah, first thing I would ask in an interview is if Kirk would have a hand on the offense or would I have so free reign. Iowa is where OC coordinator's go to die. You want to ruin your rep and retire or find other suitable employment? Take the OC position at Iowa. I think all good candidates unless desperate, won't touch this job with a 10 ft pole.

I'd like to see Joe Philbin considered, he's currently an offense analyst with OSU. He specializes in O Line which definitely needs help but not a lot of play calling experience.
Philbin notoriously abhored recruiting. Decent at player development, but I doubt he would be a good overall choice for the role.

That is exactly who I was thinking of, thank you.
Kaczenski definitely rubbed numerous people the wrong way and was rumored to have some type of personality disorder.

That said, good or bad, Polasek also had the mouth of a sailor and was old-school with his coaching style. Seth Wallace is another.

Coach K is definitely who I was thinking of, but had heard TP was a “tough” coach too. I don’t mind a tough coach, I always felt that Kaczenski was next level with it tho.

Again, I say, how many NFL offensive coaches, OC’s, specifically, might be interested? NFL coaches may tire of the hire/fire merry go round. We can certainly afford to pay them well. More importantly, the job security has to be attractive. Just sayin’

I know we had a coach that was known for displaying some uggliness on the sidelines and really got into the players in an extreme and animated fashion on the sidelines.... so much so that it was rumored to turn off a lot of players and fans who witnessed it. I "thought" that was Tim Polasek, but I could be thinking of someone else.
It was him. I’ve talked to two recent players from up here who said he was the most hatred person in the program. Apparently there was a threat at one point of the entire o-line going to the president and the potential of a scandal breaking out because of the way he treated players, and he was encouraged to find somewhere else to go. I’m guessing 20 years ago they’d have been told to shut up and deal with it but probably not today.

I myself witnessed an absolutely epic meltdown at a spring game on DeJong and another lineman that I can’t remember the name of, that was over the line imo. There was also a big line of little kids in the first row 10 feet away getting ready for the autograph session who saw it and heard about 30 f-bombs. Some parents said something and Polasek engaged in some pretty angry chirping with them, very much not a good look. He’s a pos.

Yikes. While Kirk is definitely a salty old coach too, I can't imagine he'd tolerate a coach chirping at parents right in front of their kids.

That kind of stuff gets you nowhere with players. The two I talked to (neither of them were linemen, for what it’s worth) said the OL personnel hated him. Apparently it was just show up in the morning and get screamed at, rinse and repeat.

Wallace is a screamer but by all accounts his guys really like him. There’s a difference.

Any new OC forced to run the same offense and same situational play calls will have the same result as BF.

Focus on finding a good recruiter because the system is Kirk’s. Nobody is changing much but we can get a guy who at least develops players.

With Brian we’ve seen such stagnation of development. Nobody gets better.

Agree.
We need to change offensive schemes or recruit offensive better talent.
Ideally both.

Doc wrote an article listing possible names

Chryst, David Raih, Budmyer, Polosek sp? and Ladell Betts.

of course I'd add, never count out O'Keefe

Does anyone think the AD is going to interfere in the hiring? I'm using the word interfere on purpose. I think she has an idea of what she would like to see in a candidates resume. I don't think Budmyr (sp) fits the bill. He brought Hill to Iowa and was an aide to Brian. The results aren't good. I think she will want to see multiple candidates resumes. I think it will be an interesting hiring process.

The realistic side of me thinks Chryst is about as close as we'll get to a "sexy" hire....meaning he is from outside the program, and that Kirks trusts him enough (as well as having similar philosophies) that Kirk might even let him tweak things a bit.

That said, part of me wonders if Kirk doesn't take one more shot here? He's made pretty big adjustments to his overall thinking a couple times when confronted with a need for change in the past. (We are talking like 2 times in 25 years).

I'm not suggesting Bob Stoops will come back as OC, but let's use him as an example. What if they were chatting, and Kirk confided in him that he maybe had two years left. Maybe a guy like Stoops said he'd love to be involved for a year or two with the program again. And Kirk says great, we're gonna make up some title for you (Ambassador/Senior Advisor/Chief of Staff) - and your top priority is bringing in the best OC you can, who will get to design the offense he wants with you advising (if you wish). Stoops has a great network for that.

Maybe it's not Stoops, but I'd think Kirk could really lean on another old guy to come back and have fun with him for a couple years. No real pressure, he's only bringing in the OC and helping out....and regime change would be coming soon regardless, so no real fear of the staff getting fired. If it goes poorly, people will blame the OC. And Kirk can throw his arms up and say see, I tried what you fans wanted.

Maybe it's Philbin and O'Keefe in the senior roles, and Raih as OC. (Just another example). Maybe Morgan comes back to coach offensive line for a final season with those guys, too. Seems like if Kirk had a last year or two in mind he might have fun with a couple guys on a similar timeline.
