Beatherd caused one or two timeouts

Timeouts were gone with more than 7 minutes left . . . If there was a problem with C.J. Beathard’s performance, it was timeouts. That shouldn’t be an “if.” Iowa called its final timeout of the game with 7:42 left in the game. So, it was sort of “all in” on the TD drive in which Iowa took the 24-20 lead. They lived to tell about it. This time.

The first timeout came on a third-and-9 play with 1:16 left in the third quarter. Iowa wanted to set up two plays. The first was a called handoff to RB Damon Bullock. If he gaind 5 yards, Iowa was going to go for it on fourth down. He was stopped for no gain and the field goal unit ran onto the field.

Totally understand this timeout.

Iowa called another timeout with 8:19 left in the game to set up a fourth-and-1 play that RB Mark Weisman converted. This timeout makes sense.

The one that didn’t, and seemed to rankle the Iowa sideline, was the one Beathard called with 7:42 left. Weisman had just converted a fourth-and-1 to set up a first-and-goal from Pitt’s 1. Then, the timeout.

That was a long way to go without the safety net of a timeout. There was trouble getting the play called. It was an expensive timeout, but it also avoided a first-and-goal from the 6. Iowa was great in short yardage vs. Pitt, but that would’ve been pushing it.

“When you have a new quarterback, we’ve better get that cleaned up,” Ferentz said. “We didn’t have any options there at the end. That’s . . . I get it, I’m not happy about it, but I get it.”

It's funny, I read that differently during the game. It thought it looked like CJ was p****d that the play was messed up and called time out and started letting the sidelines know his frustration and KF was making a calm down motion with his hands.

My question is, "How many times would Iowa gone ahead and run a play in which everyone was not on the same page and ended up getting stuffed or having a false start?"

But KF complaining about Time outs? Seriously?

Thing is, he will get a lot better at the game management/dead-ball stuff as he gains experience. Those are things you can learn. You can't learn raw talent which where he has the edge over Ruddock.

There will be a learning curve, but if we want to reach our potential, we have to go through that.

Not saying anything that hasn't been said already.

I was at the game and saw watched all three timeouts.

The first was on beathard. He lost track of time and could not get the audible out. Really was a case where the Pitt student section did a good job of disrupting the change at the line.

The second was on the coaching staff. Beathard sat watching the coachs decide what to call. By the time he got the call he did not have enough time to look over the defense and make an adjustment. Called timeout. Ruddock may have noticed it and hurried it up better. That could be true.

The last one was totally on the coaches. Not sure why first and goal on the 1 yard line was such a hard call but the play was not called in until about 10 seconds were left. Heck the last 4 plays were Weisman zone read to the left. That is what they ended up calling. That was not Beathard.

That's what it looked like on TV also. IMO burning the FIRST time out is not a big deal anytime you have the play clock running down and know you are not going to get the play off ... it beats a 5 yd. penalty. NFL QBs do this all the time. He just needs some more game time exposure on the road with some crowd noise.
