After looking at several message boards and schedules on other sites, there seems to be some disparity as to which games will be on tv other than Mediascum. Can anyone clear this up? The last one I looked at showed not as many games on Mediascum as earlier.

Good question! The official site only shows a couple of games by Mediacom/BTN.com, but I swear they said that Mediacom was going to show 8 games. Then again, the memory is like a block of swiss cheese...after the mice have had their share.

That would be great if they picked up the first 5 of 6 games that are, supposedly, only going to be online... Maybe that will be a last minute switch, after they snag as many as they can for the online package? The BTN is closing in on Mediacom for their gouging. Last year sucked for coverage, unless you bought their online package...

This year is going to suck even more. Last I heard, Mediacom was going to pick up 3 preconference games, the BTN is going to broadcast two,the Iowa St. game will be on their network (whatever that means) and UNI will probably be on KWWL (in very low def). That means unless you have mediacom you will miss the majority of the preseason. Anyone else think that it is ironic that Mediacom fought for a full year to keep from carrying the BTN, and now they are partnering with them to do more games than are on the network? The BTN continues to show it's disdain for Iowa. We have less preconference games being broadcast by them than any other Big Ten team. They can't claim it is because of our lack of success the previous few years as Indiana is getting NINE of their preconference games broadcast on the BTN.

I realise this subject has been discussed to death. But still...

This seems to get worse every year. Less coverage of preseason games, more games moved to streaming only.

"Excuses" from the Big Ten Network FAQ:

BTN PROGRAMMING

Q: Why doesn’t BTN televise every Big Ten football or men’s basketball game?

A: There are several contributing factors. In college athletics, the home team or home conference holds the television rights to its events. The Big Ten Conference only holds the rights to events hosted by a Big Ten school. When a Big Ten team plays a non-conference road game, the hosting school, conference or tournament organizer holds the television rights for those games and thus decisions already have been made regarding how those games are televised.

Sure seems like total disdain for the Hawkeyes and their fans.

This is total BS. I'd be very happy if they actually showed the ones that they have the rights to. Many times they DON'T.

Here's how it will be:

Chicago State - BTN.com
North Carolina A&T - BTN.com
Northern Illinois - BTN.com
Creighton - BTN
Campbell - BTN.com
IPFW - Mediacom & BTN.com
Clemson - ESPNU
Brown - BTN.com
UNI - KWWL
Iowa State - KCRG
Drake - BTN
Central Arkansas - Mediacom & BTN.com
Boise State - Mediacom & BTN.com

I confirmed with Mark Rudner (Big Ten office) that all games not on Mediacom will be on BTN.com.

Thank you very much, Tecmo, you just might have relieved a ton of anxiety over the issue. Here is a very nice bottle of Templeton Rye as a worthy reward.....

That's what it says on the university's site here. That SUCKS!

I want my Hawkeyes without issues. And I want them from my couch.

It doesn't make any sense. Why not show your team so everyone can get into the team?

Beautiful.....Simply beautiful.....

So Jack, I assume you are fine with paying your cable provider for the BTN and then paying the BTN.com extra to watch the games on your PC?

Is Barta ever on a call-in show? I sure would like to ask him about the TV situation. Last year when the the same thing happened I E-Mailed him, and of course I got no reply. I would think one of papers would ask him about it. I already had a dish when the BTN was started, however many of my friends left Mediascum, because they did not have the BTN the first year. NOw Barta makes a deal with Mediascum to carry the games. What a slap in the face to loyal fans.

About a month ago I actually talked directly to Mark Rudner on the phone and had about a 10 minute conversation about Big Ten TV and in particular Iowa on TV. For those that don't know him, Mark is the Big Ten Sr. Associate Commissioner and one of his main duties is TV scheduling. He has been with the Big Ten for over 30 years. You can follow him on Twitter @BigTenMarkTV.

Anyways this is gonna be long but, I told him of my frustration with the pre-conference schedule and how so few games would be televised. And how Iowa fans are used to every game being televised from the early 80s until the BTN came into existence.

He basically said the main reason why Iowa had so few games televised by BTN was because their non-conference schedule was so weak. They just did not have attractive games. He said when we play Drake or Iowa State at home, those are going to be good ratings draws in Iowa, so they televise it. But when you play North Carolina A&T, Brown, it’s just not a good draw.

He also said some of the blame is Iowa, he has personally reached out to Iowa to offer assistance with their scheduling, but Iowa has been somewhat inflexible with the dates they want to play. If Iowa was willing to move some of these games to Friday instead of Saturday, then more games would be televised. But when BTN has 7-8 games to choose from on a Saturday and it’s Iowa-Brown or Ohio State-Butler, well which game has more appeal?

I asked him why the alternate channels are not available for basketball, but they are for football and he said it has to do with the lack of control rooms used by Fox. BTN operates out of Chicago and their signal is beamed down to Houston where the Fox control room is at. And they might have 5-6 control rooms down there where all their TV traffic comes in for all their affiliates, such as Fox Sports Ohio, FS North, FS West, etc. And with all the NBA and NHL games during the winter months, there just isn’t enough room in their control rooms to handle the additional traffic of a BTN alternate channel like can be done in football.

I also asked about the games on BTN.com available for local distribution on Mediacom. And he said there really is no local distribution. The BTN has allowed this special arrangement for Iowa to show ‘x’ number of games on Mediacom each year because of the uniqueness of Iowa basketball in the state (basically saying since we have always been used to games being on TV, this arrangement allows some televised games for these otherwise online only broadcasts).

He did hope it will be better next year and certainly Fran has talked about upgrading the schedule, which will help.

Great post. There is still no excuse for letting Mediacom have the game, when so many people do not have it.

Especially when so many people left Mediacom (at the BTN's behest) because Mediacom refused to negotiate a reasonable rate with the BTN. The entire first year of the BTN was just a rumor if you had Mediacom.

I agree about give me hawks from the couch or give me, well, something not so enjoyable. However, 3/4 of the state of Indiana would tune in to watch the balls being inflated prior to the first practice while we struggle to get decent crowds at CHA for big ten games. I am not a BTN apologist, but it's all about ratings and basketball rules in the Hoosier state.

If there is no alternative, I will gladly pay ten dollars for the month of November to watch Franball. There appear to me five games that can be watched online:

Chicago State
North Carolina A&T
Northern Illinois
Campbell
IPFW

That is only two dollars a game. I have no problem with that. I really want to watch every game this season, and that is not too high a price to pay. I have left the Mediacom/Sinclair mess behind years ago, and can see no Earthly reason to continue to become upset over it.

I will connect my son's laptop to the HDTV with an HDMI cable, and hopefully will have a decent picture to watch. At least Creighton, Clemson, Iowa State and UNI will be on HD channels.

:)
