Basketball Recruiting Question?

Some people just want to be argumentative even when the issue is black and white (no pun intended). We desperately need athletic 6' 10" or taller post position players. I don't care what color they are just as long as they can get the job done, keep their grades up, and stay out of trouble. There are great basketball players from among many different races but proportionately blacks dominate the sport. Anyone who wants to argue against that observation doesn't have a leg to stand on.

If Fran can't recruit these type of players (black or white) then he and Barta might be able to work some kind of 2 for 1 deal out for U-haul services. I am hopeful that Fran will get the players we need and I am going to wait at least until the end of his third season before trying to assess whether we are going in the right direction.

Good post. I don't care what color they are, if they can play bring 'em in, espectially if they're athletic bigs.

I'm wondering. Does this staff have the recruiting connections we need? I'm giving Fran a couple of more years as well to be fair but just wondering.

I will assume Fran has a recruiting base on the east coach and I know one of his assistants was a head coach in Florida (central Florida I believe) so there should be some in roads there, so that's the East and the South regions right there. doesn't another coach have connections in Chicago? I really believe we are going to be alright in recruiting and that we just need to be patient. It will no doubt be the key to the success of our basketball program.

I do have a facility question that maybe one of you can answer. I realize that we are building a practice facility which is going to be awesome when it's done. I also remember hearing about renovations to our arena. Has that been done already or is it in the works and if so is there a projected date of start to finish? I've heard some opinions from others that, that maybe hurting recruiting. I am old enough however to remember the fieldhouse and the success we had with Lute in that old barn. When they sing the Iowa fight song and get to the part about rafters wringing I always think of the fieldhouse.

I think it's funny when the black/white thing gets brought up in relationship to basketball/football. What percentage of the public is black? Something like 12%? What percentage of the NBA/NFL is black? I'd guess 70%. That doesn't mean that every black guy is good at sports and it doesn't mean that every white guy is some plodding stiff, although in my case it is the truth.

It's just like when people talk about making inroads in urban areas... or they need to go to Florida to get "speed". It means let's hit Dade county and get some black kids who can run fast.

I don't think having the mindset that it is clear a higher percentage of African-American's are D1 quality athletes than white kids precludes me from treating people as individuals.

I should also point out that not only do non-super athletic (I won't call them unathletic) white guys do well in NCAA basketball, but on occasion dominate the game. I mean JJ Redick, Adam Morrison, Tyler Hansborough, Luke Harangody, Gordon Hayward, Kyle Singler, Jimmer Fredette...

These guys are limited athletes, but dominate NCAA basketball, and will never matter in the NBA. How 'bouts we get some of those white guys?

In other words, we just need some good basketball players. :D

I don't think it is a color issue. I just hope Coach Fran start tapping into larger areas outside the State. (Sorry to all the homers who preach that we need to keep instate talent but this is Iowa) There is more talent in Chicago, NY, Minn, St. Louis ect.... than in the whole state of Iowa. Sure there are the Barnes, Collisons, LaFrentzes that will come up, but there are players in these metro areas that would love to go to a Big Ten school and may not get the chance to because of all the competition they face that players in the state of Iowa do not face. Iowa will get better and these "Iowa Blue Chip" players will be wanting to be Hawkeyes, but they may be sitting for a year or two because the starting player in that position came off the bench in highschool for school that had 7000 students instead of 1400. There is alot of talent out there and Unlike the 3 previous coaches, I believe Fran will take advantage of that fact.....

The only inside changes that I have come across are the changes to the press seats. They moved the location of them.

I don't know of any other changes that are being planned. I know I read some where some time that a new "express" elevator. That will be in the new entrance to the arena.
