Basketball Attendance

This is good news and a big step, as long as the youngsters don't start getting blown out on a regular basis, I would expect it to continue to increase with Big Ten play.
Get out there folks when you can, I will be supporting the Hawks in person at Crisler Arena on Jan. 30th, can't wait to see them in person.

that is great news the marketing department deserves a pat on the back and also the new hire helps im sure

I remember Gary Barta making a statement last March after Lickliter was fired that he didn't believe the style of play had anything to do with Iowa's attendance problems...that it all came down to wins and losses.

Well, the win/loss column isn't all that great this year either but attendance is improving.

What say you Gary?

Have to believe that Mr. Barta was taking the high road and not trying to throw TL under the bus. We all know that this year and probably next year, higher ticket sales will rely on high tempo exciting games. The wins will be a bonus but the style will keep them coming. Now, if the Hawks flowder the remainder of this year and are sub 500 next season, crowds will decrease.

I had a hard time even watching the Hawks on t.v. last year. I did not attend a single game for the first time in 20 years. I went to the IL game last week and had a real hard time buying tickets outside before the game. I have purchased tickets that way for hundreds of game over the years. I ended up finding a pair at about game time, but had to go all the way back to Fink. parking area to find someone with tickets before someone else purchased them (lots of demand, almost no supply). Granted there was 4-5k Illini fans at the game and there was a lot of student section no shows, but it was the lowest amount of ticket supply I have even seen at CHA.

I the Hawks can beat a few teams this year and gain some confidence, attendance will continue to stay strong. At least they are in every game.

The non conference slate got surprisingly good crowds, here's to hoping that only increases as we make our way through the Big Ten slate.

I can't remember exactly how he phrased things, but he probably had a point. If we'd been winning 25 games with Lickliter's style, we'd have been selling out. If we were winning 25 games with Fran, we'd be selling out. You sell out when you win like that, regardless of style of play. The fast-paced tempo draws more fans than the slow-down when you're losing 15-20 games either way.

I think the fast paced temp we run is only drawing more because of the stark contrast it has when compared to Lickliter teams. In a couple of years, if we are still losing, it won't matter what type of offense we have. Nobody will show up. And it wouldn't matter even if we were scoring 100 a game (although that would be some really bad defense to lose like that.)
