I didn't like it at first but I like that it gives the division winner some kind of reward (basically the one game playoff winner has to use a starter in their one game playoff.
I also like that extra teams gives the Cubs more of a shot at the playoffs.

And more chances to be disapointed.
I see what you're saying, but I just have the cocern that for example the braves had no business being in the playoffs last year and they could have in this situation, or the red sox. I agree it is nice for the division winners. However, now the wild card team that does win, can't start their ace til game 3, depending on timing, so big disadvantage there for them.
also, when is the last time the cubs have finished second in the wild card race. I'm seriously curious.
The Additional Wild Card Team: Will It Help The Cubs? - Bleed Cubbie Blue
It would not have helped the Cubs since 1995 when the current layout began. In 1998 they played the Giants for the spot due to a tie anyway.
I didn't realize how bad the collapse in '04 was. Pretty sure they were leading the wild card at the beginning of the weak and then they dropped behind two teams and finished 3 games backed. That season blew.
This is a great thing as it truly rewards teams chit winning their division.
7 games isn't really a big enough sample to determine who's better though.
The playoffs aren't really about determining the best team anyways, it's about determining who's champion through a tournament designed to be fun and make money.
A couple of things I do not like about this.1. Only 1 game???? In a sport where 162 games is being played a 1 game wild card is not a big enough sample to determine which team is better.2. To many playoff teams dilutes the field and less emphasis on the regular season. We are already not seeing the best team in a 162 game schedule not make the World Series.3. You are going to see less and less come trade deadline. More teams are going to feel they are still in it. Which means the teams that need to rebuild won't because they will feel the pressure from fans to do whatever it takes to make the playoffs.
Posted this on a cubs board. I'll post it here to see what you guys think.
One game playoff? Make it a best of 3!
Better team record gets to chose whether it's:
Day 1: Double Header at Home Day 2: One Game on Road
or
Day 1: One Game on Road Day 2: Double Header at Home
Day 3 would be break. (You could also start round 2 here if you really want to reward division winners by not giving wild card winner a break.)
Day 4 2nd round starts.
Option 1 you can end it on day one but have to play game 3 on road.
Option 2 you have to play away first but get last 2 at home.
Hey, I saw this post on that board
if you don't want to end up in a one game playoff then win your division. this expands playoffs without lengthening the season (which isnt possible without a reduction of regular season games which Owen ers will never go for) and gives division winners a clear advantage.
this is the best thing baseball has done in a long long time.
