Im confused on why getting him the ball does not seem to be a priority for any of the guards.

What was he like 6 of 8 tonight with maybe three attempts in the second half. He maybe got one post feed the entire second half.

I dont get it.

This team play hard but is not very smart allot of the time.

Did you see the complete lack of effort he showed in 90% of the non-conference games? He basically just mailed it in. I don't blame his teammates for not wanting to feed him the pill. A couple more games with efforts like that and they will, no doubt, get him more involved. I still think he has a lot of maturing to do, and hopefully that comes soon cuz he has amazing talent, and we need him if we want to be succesful the next few years.

How is what happened months ago in any way possible more relevant than what happened in the first half of the current game?

Thats suggestion is nonsense.

This team has been awful at feeding the post for the past two years.

Have you been paying any attention to Iowa basketball the last month? Since the month of December started:

vs. Brown: 14 pts, 10 reb
@ UNI: 8 pts, 6 reb
@ Iowa St: 18 pts, 9 reb
vs. Drake: 10 pts, 5 reb
vs. C. Ark: 14 pts, 9 reb
vs. Boise St: 14 pts, 11 reb
vs. Purdue: 14 pts, 8 reb

That's 13 PPG and 8 RPG the last 7 games. He has had more games where he played like he did tonight than he did games like campbell or clemson. Furthermore, the notion that his teammates aren't "feeding him the pill" because he didn't give maximum effort in a handful of non-conference games is ludicrous.

have you seen Basabe play when he posts a guy up. It's not real pretty. he needs to be moving or get the ball face up and make a move, there were not a lot of those openings tonight. You saw him score when he got those opportunities though.

i think he is best in the face up game and in the pick and roll. he is still working on his back to the basket post game. though i'd like to see a lot more marble and basabe pick and rolls with gatens and oglesby spotting up. yes i thought we needed to feed basabe more last night but i am not sold on his back to the basket game.

He is by far our best post up option but is undersized by most big ten standards, bigger and more physical players push him off his spot and force him out to 8-10 feet, last night Purdue tried to double and Baasbe is not a great passer yet, hopefully he can develop a 15 foot jumpshot because I think they will try to post up Woodbury and Olasani more next yr.

I just don't think he's that good off the dribble in the post. He never goes up straight with it. He always does that jump hook thing and it never works.

Purdue does not have a large center either. They still should have found a way to get him the ball. I do agree with you, he needs to do a better job passing. He is like a black hole down there. The ball goes in to the post, but it nevers comes out.

his range is improving
he just needs to ber more consistant with it
the more he shoots from the outside the less he will see dbl teams down low
Iknow this is getting to be a broken record but the DBL teams will also stop once Olaseni or Woodbury step on the court

How often was Mel double teamed last night?

They don't have good situational recognition on offense, as to who is open, when is it a good time to shoot, who should be taking a particular shot. I like Marble driving and creating his own shot, but he needs to be aware of the situation as to when it is a good time to not do that. I'd like to see them try to get the ball into Basabe early in the play before the middle gets clogged up. Just because a guy is open, doesn't mean he should be the one shooting the ball, some ill-timed 3-pointers.

But, overall, good effort last night. Keep that up and they'll win more games in the BT than I thought they would.

only when he caught it deep and by the basket, Purdue did a great job after his fast start in pushing him out away from the basket, if Baasbe can learn to face up and shoot the mid range shot or dribble drive similar to Hummel, look out

Storm, any chance you give us a update on future recruits? How they are developing, 2013-14 classes, sorry I know you have a full time job but we are very excited about the future under Fran.

Part of the issue is not having a good PG on the team. If you watch Jordan Taylor and Aaron Craft they know exactly who should be shooting the ball and when. You don't even need to be a top notch PG, but you must really understand the game and the players on your team. Guys will be calling for the ball but you don't have to throw them the ball if it's not the right spot to get that player the ball.

I agree about getting the ball to Basabe early. Also you have to get him the ball quick as he does not hold post position very well.

I think getting a good 5 will help. Basabe needs to play the 4 and have another strong presence down low with him (like Cole provided last year).

He shouldn't have to hold position that long. Being open for more than a second or two is plenty of time to get him the ball.

There was at least once last night where the announcer basically said "what are you thinking, give the ball to Basabe," one of the times he was posted deep and they just ignored him.

Feeding the post is not hard. There were probably 100 guys who played for Tom Davis who could do it better than anyone on this team.

Thats very far from the truth.

Almost everything he shoots inside of 5 feet goes in. His jump hook is usually pretty effective, it probably goes in about 60 percent of the time.

Basabe was playing against guys similar in size last night and was getting great post position. I only remember one tough double team early, Basabe passed out of it and Purdue was not as aggressive with their double after that; not enough to be noticeable.
Lack of a true PG does hurt, Iowa also stands around on the perimeter a lot and don't create very good passing angles to feed him. Last night though, Basabe had great inside position a lot and all they had to do was throw it at the rim.

Absolutely correct
