Basabe Likely to Start vs Penn State

Not a fan. Keep the young kids confidence from dropping and keep him in the starting lineup. His development is the biggest key to Iowa being a true Big 10 contender in a couple years. Who cares if he starts over Mel as long as Mel plays more anyway? 31 min to 17 last game

Makes sense. I know Fran was trying to be careful with Woody's confidence, but the team supersedes that after a while. Basabe has more than earned a starting spot. Maybe this will help push Woody to try and get back his spot and coming in off the bench could take some of the pressure off as well.

I can see why they need a shakeup in the lineup, but I would worry about not having that instant energy off the bench.

Will be interesting to see how it works.

I think that's why Fran has been hesitant to do it. Mel is an instant spark off the bench. The optimist in me hopes Woody thrives in this role and puts more of a chip on his shoulder.

I can see both sides of the argument here. But Mel has not only regained his freshman form, he's exceeded it. He's playing with much more consistency and with an expanded skill set. He didn't have that 15 foot jumper as a freshman, and he's got improved handles (respectable for a big, anyway).

To be honest I'm really pumped. I remember his freshman year and how, even though the team sucked the new up-tempo style was fun to watch and I always thought Basabe was extremely exciting to watch and how he was a model for the type of athletic players Fran wants to bring to iowa. He was my favorite player and to be honest I had been hoping he'd start over Woodbury for a while now. I think that more Mel is good for this team. 'SABE SWAG.

interesting turn of events. fran was adamant that Woody was the starter. of course he also said some things about JO too...

This may end up working out just fine, but I would worry about him picking up a couple of quick fouls and being out of the flow of the game.

Sure, Woodbury can and does do the same thing, but at this point, having him sit for much of the half doesn't hurt you as much as if Basabe sits.

There is something about being a sixth man that allows you to let the game come to you that has obviously been working for Basabe.

I agree this is a good thing. Being a spark off the bench is overrated anyway. I'd rather have a spark in the starting lineup.

LOL shut it clown. Basabe's the ****. 'SABE SWAG

Excited. Woody has been frustrating me lately. His development isn't going to be too positive if you continue to warrant poor play. Seemed off on boxing out lately, for his size is inexcusable.

I just hope coach gives this move a fair "sample size" in order to judge its effectiveness.

I.e....not knee-jerk back to the original starting 5 if it isn't all peaches n cream the first time out.

Original starting lineup has had 7 conf games to show itself. Let's give the new move the same.

Might help Woody with the pressure of starting off his back. He would be able to observe how the game is being played and called. Just might help with the usual two quick fouls. It is certainly worth a try. I imagine Woody would be cool about the move being a team player.....
