Barta's status

in order to call KF's contract BAD, you must think that he should be fired.

which is completely stupid

Did you watch the 60 minutes piece this last Sunday about the business of college football? I would highly recommend it, could be a little depressing as to the state of college athletics but still a good piece nonetheless.

As we all know football drives the athletic department revenues if not the revenues and charitable giving for the entire university. Thus the entire university is going to suffer due to BAD contract terms that have been afforded KF. I thought that this university would have learned something from the Steve Alford debacle, and he left on his own!! We're just now starting to dig out of that hole.

Two scenarios that almost always never work out are 'Coach in waiting' and 'Lifetime contracts'.

In this day and age, Ferentz' contract is at best reckless and at worst a fireable of offense.

So. Much. Derp.

Not necessarily, I do not think KF should be fired but I did not agree with the contract extension they gave him either nor did I agree with the extension he gave Fran McCaffery. Firing KF is not even an option at this point because he would be owed 20 million dollars. Barta threw a ton of money at Fran because he got Iowa to the NIT. IMO, it sets the bar to low and you always want the coaches earning their next contract. It is not a bad thing to have a coach at risk to be snagged up by another school or by the pros, that usually means the coaches and team is performing well. At that point if you want to retain their services, then throw the money at them. At the time he got the extension Iowa had won the Orange Bowl and he was rumored to be a candidate for the Kansas City job. So I can understand giving him an extension, but 11 years????

if the people who matter want KF gone, the buyout is irrelevant. even if KF didnt accept a lower buyout a la tuberville, the money is no issue. its a moot point for 2 years anyway.

still waiting on that list of candidates for the replacement AD, and now I need a list for replacement presidents as well. since, you know, this board clearly knows that better candidates are out there.

dave skorton aint walkin through that door. thanks mikey.

Beat me to it. I don't think he should be fired, yet. I have always thought he was overpaid. Iowa fell into the FUD trap and would give KF a knee-jerk extension any time NFL rumors came up. It is also my personal opinion that coaching contracts shouldn't be out more than 5 years at any given time.

Im sorry, I think KF has earned $2.5 million a year and a $1 million per year buyout. We are potentially at risk because of this contract if things don't turn around and frankly the coach doesn't have to answer to anyone because he knows we've given him the upper hand and cannot fire him.

Well Delaney bringing in MARYLAND is a good distraction WTH would bring in Maryland over Mizzou! Nice job Delaney as I posted alot over the summer Mike Slive and the other commissioners are awake while Delaney fiddles as the BIG 10 as a brand slowly erodes.

Maryland is a much better academic institution than Mizzou. Academically, Big Ten took substantial hit by accepting Nebraska. Maryland also brings in DC/Baltimore TV sets. Mizzou brings in St. Louis. DC/Baltimore No. 5, I think, market in country. St. Louis somewhere in the 20s. Businesswise, bringing in Maryland by far is better than Mizzou. SEC may be killing everybody in football, but BT is trumping everybody in the pocketbook.

But that really is not what is being discussed here. Whether or not KF should be fired is another topic, one that I do not agree with. The topic is the guy who gave KF the contract to begin with. There is no way Kansas City came in offering 10+ years at 35 million with a $20 million buyout. If there was an offer on the table then a good business person would sit down with the offer and negotiate to retain his services. Keep in mind it would have been a huge risk for KF to walk away after that 2009 season, the 2010 season many felt was our best chance to win the NC. So Barta give him an unbelievable extension with a huge buyout and the very next year Iowa has their worst coached and underachieving team in a long time. Maybe it is a coincidence but unless the coach has a really strong desire to win it is only natural to relax a little after being given such job security.

A little off topic but seeing how Fran McCaffery coached last year with intensity, throwing chairs, ect after seeing how calm Fran was being down 20 to Gardner Webb and hearing his halftime was calm and collect the first thing I thought of was his big contract extension given to him. Obviously I do not want him throwing chairs and maybe this makes Fran a better coach but I was surprised at how calm he was.

I don't know, don't care, and my name is not mikey.

Nebraska's academics were addled to a significant degree by their prior conference affiliation. Nebraska is a fine research institution with a great medical program and decent professional (law, business etc.) colleges. Nebraska has academic potential and should realize it now.

I would like to point out that I don't care about academics. No one does. This is already a ridiculous, money-grabbing farce, and pretending like academics matters is something smart people shouldn't do.

speak for yourself. the money in athletics is dwarfed by research funding. i also like my degree to be worth as much as possible.

going back to the OP's subject line. When I read it, I immediately thought of Barta's facebook page status pending..."in a relationship". But he's waiting for Kirk to confirm on the other end.

Yeah, and no one cares about research funding. And how does your school's conference affiliation change the worth of your degree? The fact you think there's a connection there leads me to believe you didn't go to Northwestern, Michigan, or Wisconsin.

i would like to see the posters in this thread go visit with the all the coaches on campus and ask them if they appreciate gary's work at iowa.

i would also like to see a list of reasonable candidates to replace him since, you know, everyone wants to work at iowa as shown by the last list of AD candidates.

Raises and extensions for mediocrity. I bet they luv him.
